An Analysis Of Commentary In Men’S And Women’S Olympic Basketball, Madison Monk
An Analysis Of Commentary In Men’S And Women’S Olympic Basketball, Madison Monk
Honors Projects
The objectification theory suggests that women are subjected to more comments about their appearance than men, but in the field of athletics and sports analysts, newer perspectives suggest that there are fewer distinctions between how male and female athletes are portrayed. The present study examined whether there were differences in broadcast commentary of men’s and women’s Olympic basketball gold medal games, including comments about the players looks and appearance, their physicality and athleticism, and the pattern of name used. The coding method employed was developed based on previous research and used to quantify the frequency of each category ...

Changes In Leukocyte Hspa1a, Hspb1 Mrna In Basketball Players After Plyometric Training, Malgorzata Zychowska, Eglė Kemerytė-Riaubienė, Audrius Gocentas, Nijole Jascaniniene, Grzegorz Chruscinski
Changes In Leukocyte Hspa1a, Hspb1 Mrna In Basketball Players After Plyometric Training, Malgorzata Zychowska, Eglė Kemerytė-Riaubienė, Audrius Gocentas, Nijole Jascaniniene, Grzegorz Chruscinski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Exercise-induced stressors activate leukocyte HSPA1A and HSPB1 gene transcripts. However it is not clear how plyometric training affects the expression of these genes in basketball players under plyometric exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the changes in leukocyte HSPA1A and HSPB1 mRNA, in male basketball players after plyometric training. Material/Methods: Twelve male college basketball players (age 22.1 ±2.96 years) took part in this study. Peripheral blood (2.0 ml) was collected from the ulnar vein of each participant before and after a plyometric exercise to assess HSPA1A and HSPB1 mRNA relative expression ...
Proposal Of An Observation Sheet For Basketball Players’ Performance Assessment, Andrzej Szwarc, Izabela Lekner
Proposal Of An Observation Sheet For Basketball Players’ Performance Assessment, Andrzej Szwarc, Izabela Lekner
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The aim of this study was to develop a research tool used for an assessment of basketball players’ performance. Material/Methods: First, research of the subject literature was made and a preliminary outline of an assessment sheet for basketball players was developed. Next, after causing test observation, the final model of the observation sheet was prepared, and its reliability was evaluated. To measure the inter-observer agreement three experts independently viewed the same game, where they had to assess different components of game performance using the newly developed instrument. The inter- and intra-observer agreement was calculated by means of the ...
Test 8 × 32.8 M As A Diagnostic And Fitness Level Control Indicator In Basketball (Diagnostic Test In Basketball), Stanislaw Przybylski, Piotr Makar, Grzegorz Bielec
Test 8 × 32.8 M As A Diagnostic And Fitness Level Control Indicator In Basketball (Diagnostic Test In Basketball), Stanislaw Przybylski, Piotr Makar, Grzegorz Bielec
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Physiological studies conducted for over 20 years on basketball players have shown an increasing share of anaerobic efforts during the game. The players' throw effectiveness and their ability to move quickly on the playing field often determine the result of the match. The current control of kinematics and biochemical variables is crucial in the modern training process. Material/Methods: The study was conducted on an 11-person group of male athletes from a Polish first-league basketball team. The subjects had to perform a fitness test proposed by the authors: 8×32.8m with bouncing, throwing a ball to the basket ...
Effects Of 6-Week Basketball Training Using The Modified Circuit Weight Method, Jaroslaw Omorczyk, Tadeusz Ambroży, Ewa Puszczalowska-Lizis, Mateusz Nowak, Andrzej Markowski
Effects Of 6-Week Basketball Training Using The Modified Circuit Weight Method, Jaroslaw Omorczyk, Tadeusz Ambroży, Ewa Puszczalowska-Lizis, Mateusz Nowak, Andrzej Markowski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The study aim was to evaluate the effect of a 6-week modified workout routine using the modified circuit weight method on selected anthropometric measures, components of physical fitness and physiological indices in competitive basketball players. The study involved 30 basketball players (mean age: 23.4 ±1.8 years). Modified circuit weight method sessions were repeated 3 times a week. Each training session was subdivided into 3 circuits: strength conditioning, exercises to enhance functional fitness and a circuit of sport-specific exercises. Statistically significant differences in values of circumferences and skinfolds were found between pre-test and post-test values, with no statistically significant ...
Determination Of Maximal Oxygen Uptake Through A New Basketball-Specific Field Test, Ersen Adsiz, Gulbin Rudarli Nalcakan, S. Rana Varol, Faik Vural
Determination Of Maximal Oxygen Uptake Through A New Basketball-Specific Field Test, Ersen Adsiz, Gulbin Rudarli Nalcakan, S. Rana Varol, Faik Vural
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The aim of this study was to develop a new basketball-specific field test (BSFT) that determines the maximal oxygen uptake indirectly and to determine the reliability and validity of the test for measuring aerobic power. An aerobic endurance-based test totalling 1.5 miles on a basketball court including side steps and running was designed to be completed as quickly as possible. 15-year-old, male basketball players’ maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) levels measured directly as the gold standard laboratory test. Laboratory test results showed a significant negative correlation between the VO2max level and the duration of the BSFT (r = -0.705, p ...
The Point Spread As A Reference Point: Evidence From The National Basketball Association, George Diemer, Michael Leeds
The Point Spread As A Reference Point: Evidence From The National Basketball Association, George Diemer, Michael Leeds
Journal of Applied Sport Management
A contentious literature surrounds the claim that heavy favorites’ failure to cover the point-spread in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball could indicate point-shaving. This paper extends the literature by using a new methodology to show that favorites in the National Basketball Association (NBA) also frequently fail to cover the spread. However, the high salaries in the NBA make point-shaving by players unlikely. Moreover, heavy underdogs also fail to cover the point spread and lose by more than expected. These seemingly anomalous findings are consistent with underdogs’ using the point-spread as a reference point.
