“I Could Study Anywhere, As Long As I Could Sit I’Ll Study:” Student Spaces And Pathways At The City University Of New York, Maura A. Smale, Mariana Regalado

Publications and Research

Undergraduate students at the City University of New York navigate multiply occupied places as they attend college on the urban campuses of this commuter institution. CUNY students often negotiate competing diversions from their scholarly experiences, including family obligations and job responsibilities, that constrain them both temporally and financially. Additionally, space considerations at home, school, and the commute influence and shape student activities and opportunities. In this paper we examine how college students interact with school spaces, from where they store their books to where they study and write their papers, and to what degree they succeed at constituting these areas ...

Faith, Spirituality, And Sustainability, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

This speech was delivered at the University of Arkansas's Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace (Fayetteville, AR). In it Pollard considers the 2008 financial crisis, which he believes requires business leaders to adopt new models of leadership and new ways of educating future managers. Such measures will ensure that corporate firms will always consider profit alongside the more significant goal of forming moral character.

Essay Defending Ocr Letter On Colleges And Sexual Assault, Donna M. Bickford, Brenda Bethman, Michelle Issadore, Michelle Kroner

Faculty and Staff Publications By Year

Four women involved in providing services for women on campuses respond to a recent essay criticizing the Education Department's guidance on responding to reports of sexual assault.

We write in response to the essay “An Open Letter to OCR," by “Anonymous.” As higher education professionals who work with survivors of sexual assault and in prevention efforts on our respective campuses, we could not disagree more with the comments and conclusions of this author.

“Impact” In 3d—Maximizing Impact Through Transactional Clinics, Praveen Kosuri Nov 2011

“Impact” In 3d—Maximizing Impact Through Transactional Clinics, Praveen Kosuri

Faculty Scholarship at Penn Law

In speaking about “impact” clinical legal education, it is almost always exclusively as litigation—innocence projects, representing Guantanamo detainees, human rights concerns, environmental issues. Though these clinical efforts target different societal ills, all try to use the legal system as a catalyst for change. Rarely do clinicians invoke the word “impact” in the same manner in discussing transactional legal work much less transactional clinics. Yet transactional clinics can and do perform impact work. This article describes the current landscape of transactional clinics, the distinct evolution of community economic development clinics from small business and organizations clinics and argues that both ...
