The Anchor, Volume 116.13: December 4, 2002, Hope College
The Anchor: 2002
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Masters Of Hypocrisy: Hootie, Tiger, Cbs, And The Corporate Sponsors, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Could there be an issue more emblematic of the Bush Era in domestic affairs than the smoldering muck pile being stoked at the legendary Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Master’s and seat of hypocrisy in the “New” South? Maybe there is, but until it comes across my laptop this will do.
Initiative 300 And The Structure Of Nebraska’S Cattle Feeding Industry: Did The Law Make A Difference?, Azzeddine Azzam
Initiative 300 And The Structure Of Nebraska’S Cattle Feeding Industry: Did The Law Make A Difference?, Azzeddine Azzam
Cornhusker Economics
In a recently completed study on the effect of Initiative 300 on the structure of Nebraska's cattle feeding industry, agricultural economists, Azzeddine M. Azzam from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and John R. Schroeter from Iowa State University, in cooperation with UNL Ag Law specialist, David Aiken, found no statistical difference between how the size of feedlots has evolved in Nebraska and how they've evolved in other major cattle feeding states (Colorado, Kansas and Texas) that have no restrictions on corporate investment in cattle feeding. All four states studied have seen a trend of larger feedlots supplanting small-scale operations. The study …

Strategic Brand Image Analysis For Heterogeneous Markets – Applying Dynamic Perceptions Based Market Segmentation (Dynpbms) To Dishwashing Brand Data, Sara Dolnicar
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The aim of this article is to illustrate the usefulness of an exploratory tool called dynamic perceptions based market segmentation (dynPBMS, based on the PBMS approach introduced by Mazanec and Strasser (2000) and Buchta, Dolnicar and Reutterer (2000)) for the investigation of image patterns in the marketplace as well as structural changes of such patterns over time. As starting point for analysis typical brand image data is used: repeated surveys questioning respondents about their evaluation of multiple brands with regard to multiple attributes. The advantages of using dynPBMS as compared to traditional tools applied in market structure analysis include (1) …
A Review Of Unquestioned Standards In Using Cluster Analysis For Data-Driven Market Segmentation, Sara Dolnicar
A Review Of Unquestioned Standards In Using Cluster Analysis For Data-Driven Market Segmentation, Sara Dolnicar
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Clustering is a highly popular and widely used tool for identifying or constructing databased market segments. Over decades of applying cluster analytical procedures for the purpose of searching for homogeneous subgroups among consumers, questionable standards of utilization have emerged, e.g. the non-explorative manner in which results from cluster analytic procedures are reported, the black-box approach ignoring crucial parameters of the algorithms applied or the lack of harmonization of methodology chosen and data conditions. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to investigate whether and which standards of application of cluster analysis have emerged in the academic marketing literature, (2) …

The Uptown Housing And Land Use Study, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Peter Haas, Philip Nyden, Thomas Walsh, Nathan Benefield, Christopher Giangreco
Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
In the Fall of 2000, State Representative Larry McKeon, at the urging of local community groups and residents, commissioned Loyola University Chicago’s Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL) to provide an analysis of relevant data regarding housing and land use in the Uptown community. A Local Advisory Council (LAC) was created to review, evaluate, and advise the project staff as they collected and analyzed data sets. For the past two years, researchers at CURL have worked with Organization of the NorthEast (ONE), Representative McKeon, and the LAC to collect and analyze data from a variety of sources. The goal …

Review Of Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution, And Profit By Vandana Shiva; South End Press, 2002, Sue Ann Gardner
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
A renowned expert in global agricultural and environmental issues, Shiva has produced another volume, this time on the perils of privatization and pollution of water resources. Covering water's significance, from its practical necessity to its spiritual essence, Shiva sets out to justify the premise that "The water crisis is the most pervasive, most severe, and most invisible dimension of the ecological devastation of the earth." Though the topic is timely and poignant, the presentation is more that of a collection of research notes than a fully formed essay. The organization is not straightforward either chronologically or in terms of subject …

“Private” Crime In Public Housing: Violent Victimization, Fear Of Crime And Social Isolation Among Women Public Housing Residents, Claire M. Renzetti, Shana L. Maier
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). The interviews reveal high rates of violent victimization, especially at the hands of intimates and acquaintances. Fear of crime is also …
A Rationale For Meeting Quotas Asymmetrically, J. Patrick Meister, Robert S. Main
A Rationale For Meeting Quotas Asymmetrically, J. Patrick Meister, Robert S. Main
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
Under certain conditions, otherwise identical, competing firms may find it jointly preferable to face differing degrees of trade barriers on individual products rather than symmetric trade barriers. The key is the ability to reduce marginal production cost via research and development. The economic significance of this insight is that there could be a role for a market for quota allotments. This insight also has applications to Voluntary Export Restraints in which a priori symmetric, restricted firms may prefer to have individual production levels allocated asymmetrically. This indicates the need for detailed studies of how quotas are met by individual firms. …
Puerto Rico: State Formation In A Colonial Context, Pedro Caban
Puerto Rico: State Formation In A Colonial Context, Pedro Caban
Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship
This article examines U.S. Puerto Rico relations during the American century through the prism of the colonial state and identifies eight periods of fundamental political and economic change that altered the conduct of U.S. colonial practice in Puerto Rico. These periods witnessed the emergence, ascendancy and decline of local political coalitions that competed for control of the control state. The coalitions articulated distinct economic projects and pursued different strategies to resolve Puerto Rico's status as an unincorporated territorial possession. Each period was also marked by insular economic restructuring precipitated by shifts in U.S. fiscal policies and changes in the economy, …

Disappearing Databases, Carol Tenopir
Disappearing Databases, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT, September 30, 2002, 19 databases disappeared without a trace from the Dialog online system. The reason? CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) and Dialog had failed to reach a renewal agreement. On October 1, Dialog searchers received a message "file does not exist" when they entered a CSA file number. A logon message listed the file numbers that were removed. (Admittedly, a notice was sent to subscribers, and a logon warning message ran for a couple of weeks prior to October 1.) This is just the latest case in a disturbing trend of disappearing databases.
