The Fragmentation Of Self Within The Indian Novel, Michele Gibney
The Fragmentation Of Self Within The Indian Novel, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
With the novel Midnight’s Children, Rushdie forged a new path for novel-writing. In his epic story the main character became split into two in order to show the many facets of Indian culture. Instead of gaining an understanding of just one way of life, the reader became privy to all the stories being lived in such places as the Methwold estates, the surreal Sundarbans, and the Magician’s Ghetto. The story of one, single individual was lost in the cacophony of voices that each had their own tale to tell in Rushdie’s novel. This new form of writing, which favored the …

The Two Koreas: Prospects For Economic Cooperation And Integration, Marcus Noland
The Two Koreas: Prospects For Economic Cooperation And Integration, Marcus Noland
Marcus Noland
After nearly a half century of strident adherence to the principles of socialism and self-reliance, North Korea may be on the verge of opening itself to outside aid and advice. Motivators include a decade of economic trouble punctuated by declining output and famine as well as underdeveloped infrastructures and reduction in foreign trade and material support. The limits of national selfsufficiency may finally have become admissible in North Korea, as evidenced by recent diplomatic negotiations and cooperative commercial projects with capitalist nations. South Korea, meanwhile, is struggling to regain ground lost in the financial crisis and to correct faults in …
Real Time And Relative Indeterminacy In Economic Theory, Mario Rizzo
Real Time And Relative Indeterminacy In Economic Theory, Mario Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
This article develops the implications of a dynamic conception of time for the idea of plan coordination in economics. It traces the development of some philosophical, scientific and economic theories in the twentieth century. A contrast is made with static or Newtonian views of time in economics.

Problem-Based Learning Inside And Out: Multiple Roles For Librarians, Jolene Miller
Problem-Based Learning Inside And Out: Multiple Roles For Librarians, Jolene Miller
Jolene M. Miller
As an active learning technique, problem-based learning benefits students by encouraging them to apply what they have learned in class to real-world problems and by improving their information literacy skills. Librarians working in institutions with problem-based learning are most familiar with with these students through reference encounters. Our participation in problem-based learning, however, should not be limited to the reference desk. Librarians can and should play multiple roles in their institutions' problem-based learning curricula. This poster describes five levels of librarian participation in problem-based learning (reference assistance to students, information literacy training for students, consultations with departmental faculty regarding available …

Gis And Spatial Analysis In Urban And Regional Research, Derek Bond
Gis And Spatial Analysis In Urban And Regional Research, Derek Bond
Derek Bond
The early optimism surrounding GIS has now faded. Few GIS implementations have lived up to expectation. The most successful have been those at the operational level where their main role has been to replace paper maps with digital ones. However, as the cost of GIS implementation falls and spatial data becomes more readily available there is a need to consider the future of GIS and spatial analysis. This is particularly important in the field of urban and regional research especially where considerable investment in GIS has already been made. This paper looks at the major issues that face regional and …

Between Untouchable and The Bachelor of Arts there is a world of difference in the basic situations of the main characters. One is an uneducated street sweeper and the other is a University graduate, and both have a different conception of the British. However, there is also a common thread that unites the two novels in the main characters concluding acceptance of the “home”/India over the “world”/England. Thus, although different values are assigned to the importance of British colonialism within the texts, in the end each novel comes to a stand wherein Indian culture is favored over the British.

Sequential Screening, Pascal Courty, Hao Li
Sequential Screening, Pascal Courty, Hao Li

We present a model of price discrimination where a monopolist faces consumers with unitary demands who learn their valuations over time. Consumers are privately informed at the time of contracting about valuation distribution, but they privately learn their actual valuations after contracting. The monopolist sequentially screens consumers with a menu of contracts: they first choose a contract and then choose the level of consumption according to the terms specified in the contract. A deterministic sequential mechanism is a menu of refund contracts, each consisting of an advance payment and a refund amount in case of no consumption, but general sequential …
Risk-Sharing, Sorting, And Early Contracting, Hao Li, Wing Suen
Risk-Sharing, Sorting, And Early Contracting, Hao Li, Wing Suen
hao li
In an assignment market with uncertainty regarding productive ability of participants, early contracting can occur before the uncertainty is resolved as participants balance the trade-off between insurance provided by early bilateral contracts and the gains from more efficient sorting by remaining in the market. We apply competitive equilibrium analysis to determine the patterns of early contracting, the terms of early contracts, and the distribution of benefits of early contracting. Early contracts can be signed between more promising agents (who are more likely to have higher abilities) because the gains from insurance outweigh the loss of inefficient sorting, while less promising …
