In a square asymmetric matrix, the relationships among objects in the lower triangular half-matrix, differ from the relationships among the same objects in the upper triangular half. Square, asymmetric matrices can arise in similarity and preference data, when the direction of comparison is important. An asymmetric matrix can be rendered symmetric by averaging corresponding entries above and below the main diagonal. The difference between the original and the symmetric matrix is purely asymmetric, or skew-symmetric. The symmetric and skew-symmetric pans are orthogonal. Technical Bulletins

The authors of this bulletin analyze price series for stumpage in Maine. For each available species and product group (sawlogs, pulpwood), they test for stationarity and fit autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA ) models to the data based on preliminary diagnostics. They then perform in-sample and out-of-sample price forecasts. The central objective or this work is to characterize the processes for Maine stumpage prices in order to identify opportunities for using reservation price policies to increase timber and land values. These results are of particular value to nonindustrial timber growers for use in scheduling harvests.

Counseling Faculty Scholarship

Labelling theory has been a useful analytic tool for examining the self-fulfilling prophecy in schools. While many studies have explicated the process of labelling from teacher to student—much less scholarly attention has been focused on peer-labelling. This article introduces this perspective as a useful analytic tool for understanding peer-rejection and the enormous consequences of ignoring the problem of peer-labelling. Discussion will conclude with some general suggestions of ways in which educators can help prevent and remedy peer-rejection.

Preventive Intervention As Means Of Clarifying Direction Of Effects In Socialization: Anxious-Withdrawn Preschoolers Case, Peter J. Lafreniere, France Capuano

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

An indicated preventive intervention research program integrating attachment, attributional, and behaviorist perspectives was conducted to test the hypothesis that parent-child relationship disturbances directly effect the child's adjustment to the preschool. Anxious-withdrawn preschool children and their mothers were divided equally into treatment and control groups, and assessed on maternal self-report of parenting stress, behavioral ratings of mother-child interaction, and teacher ratings of the children in the preschool classroom. Results showed significant changes in the treatment group: mothers in the treatment group moderated their level of control to a more appropriate, less intrusive level, while children in the treatment group showed an …

This study presents a methodology for estimating land use shares and transitions. Our approach emphasizes the importance of land quality in determining land use. Land quality is an index of the physical characteristics of land such as soil depth, slope, and water capacity. We develop a procedure for recovering the probability that land of a given quality is put t o a particular use. In addition, we identify the probability that land shifts from one use to another.
