B789: A Breakeven Analysis Of Two Rural Health Maintenance Organization Models, Steven P. Skinner, Brenda S. Bridges, Stephen D. Reiling, Dennis A. Watkins Nov 1982

B789: A Breakeven Analysis Of Two Rural Health Maintenance Organization Models, Steven P. Skinner, Brenda S. Bridges, Stephen D. Reiling, Dennis A. Watkins

Bulletins

This report uses breakeven analysis to assess the financial feasibility of two health maintenance organization (HMO) models which have received considerable support from health-care professionals as potentially viable organizations in rural areas. The two models analyzed, the individual practice association and satellite clinic, represent quite different organizational and financial structures. Enrollment levels required for each HMO model to attain financial viability for specified premium rates are calculated. In addition, the effects of varying key health-care utilization rates on an HMO's financial position are assessed. This information should be of interest to extension agents and others who are working with groups …

We Eat The Mines And The Mines Eat Us: Dependency And Exploitation In Bolivian Tin Mines (Book Review), Melvin Burke Apr 1982

We Eat The Mines And The Mines Eat Us: Dependency And Exploitation In Bolivian Tin Mines (Book Review), Melvin Burke

School of Economics Faculty Scholarship

...[t]here is much to be learned by anthropologists, economists, Bolivian scholars, socialists, and capitalists alike from this book. None of these individuals will be completely satisfied, since the work will not be sufficiently scientific or ideologically correct for specialists. Such, however, is the nature of a truly cross-disciplinary study like the one here under review. Nevertheless, virtually everyone who reads Nash's latest book should find it, as I did, enlightening, interesting, and above all emotionally moving.

Marshall Dodge of "Bert and I" fame was killed when struck from behind by a car while he was riding his bicycle on a back road in Hawaii, Wednesday, January 27 [1982]. That's a real loss for the State of Maine; Marshall was nothing short of an institution, and a beloved one at that. When it came to telling that particular kind of story — what I've come to call the "St. Botolph's Club tradition"-there was simply no-one who could touch him. He didn't invent the genre; generations of Maine-loving summer people before him did that. But he was the …

Biological And Economic Effects Of Increasing The Minimum Legal Size Of American Lobster In Maine, James Acheson, R. Reidman Jan 1982

Biological And Economic Effects Of Increasing The Minimum Legal Size Of American Lobster In Maine, James Acheson, R. Reidman

Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The Northeast Marine Fisheries Board recently completed a comprehensive management plan for American lobster Homarus americanus, the most important provision of which is to raise the legal minimum size of lobsters from 81 to 88.9 mm carapace length incrementally over 5 years. Its objective is to increase egg production and recruitment, and thus reduce the likelihood of stock failure; economic benefits are anticipated for fishermen. However, a model used to analyze the frequency distributions of some 9,000 Maine lobsters demonstrates that in every year the legal minimum size is increased, smaller numbers and less weight of lobsters would be landed …

B780: A Cost Analysis Of Pruning Procedures In Lowbush Blueberry Production, Eric J. Hanson, Amr A. Ismail, Homer Metzger Jan 1982

B780: A Cost Analysis Of Pruning Procedures In Lowbush Blueberry Production, Eric J. Hanson, Amr A. Ismail, Homer Metzger

Bulletins

Burning fields with fuel oil is currently the most practical method of pruning blueberries but is costly and destructive to the organic material on the surface of the soil. Fuel oil is a nonrenewable resource that is rapidly increasing in cost and, in the future, may become less readily available for this use. The need to develop alternative means of pruning lowbush bleuberries is evident. This bulletin compares the economics of six pruning procedures on operations of three sizes. The budgets are based on certain assumptions and costs which will change over time. The results will allow blueberry growers to …
