Waste, Abuse Assure Changes In Section 8 Housing, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The series of articles and subsequent editorials on the Section 8 program that appeared in these papers have drawn several angry responses to the editor from residents of this government-assisted housing. Typical is the following: 'When something worthwhile is being done for the handicapped and elderly in Rhode Island, why do you do your best to kill it?...If the Section 8 program is hurt in any way because of your articles, you can sit back and laugh while 1,700 future applicants for housing are crying.'"

Suburban Elderly Speak Out In Providence, Chester Smolski Nov 1979

Suburban Elderly Speak Out In Providence, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The talk was designed to elicit information and reactions from the audience of elderly. And it did just that because old people do not waste words and are not reluctant to speak out, perhaps because they realize that they have little time left, so they were ready with their comments and quite willing to fill out the questionnaire."

Ddasaccident074, Hd-Aid

Global CWD Repository

On the day of the accident the victim was inspecting one of four demining teams when it started to rain. He was aware that their explosives store was not properly covered, so he looked around for something suitable to serve as a tarpaulin. He saw some material and picked it up, turning as he did so. His foot detonated an unidentified anti-personnel mine that was partially under his left foot. He was not wearing any protective clothing. The photograph below shows him reproducing the position he was in at the time.

The Local Planning Boards Miss An Opportunity, Chester Smolski Nov 1979

The Local Planning Boards Miss An Opportunity, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Planning boards in the communities of the state have the responsibility to study, advise and recommend strategies and policies for the growth and development of their respective cities and towns. These appointed members frequently have no background on such matters and must often make decisions on which they have little understanding. This is particularly true in areas of housing where PUD, PURD, Condo, Co-op, zero lot line zoning, and a host of other acronyms and concepts sometimes defy comprehension."

Ask anyone who has had any contact with Federal Hill during the past 50 years about the Doctors Gorfine, and you’re sure to have some reaction.

Either of a childhood dental experience or their parents first exposure to dentistry.

Or should you be talking with an elder, they'll remind you when it only cost 50 cents to have a tooth extracted and that sometimes people couldn’t afford it.

But their tooth was extracted and other dental work done and that later they paid the doctors Gorfine when they were able to.

It was this faith in a community and pioneering …

B763: The Perceptions, Attitudes, And Reactions Of Maine Commercial Fishermen Regarding Extended Jurisdiction And Fishery Management Practices, Elizabeth Ferguson, Wallace C. Dunham

Bulletins

The enactment of the Fisheries Conservation and Management Act of 1976 (FCMA) on March 1, 1977 marked the beginning of a new era for the fishing industry of the United States. This act, commonly referred to as the "200 mile limit", has the potential of bringing about important institutional changes in the fishing industry. The legislation was necessitated by increased fishing pressure from both United States and foreign vessels, and the apparent inadequacy of existing fishery management practices and controls. The FCMA provides a framework of regulations which has the scope and flexibility needed to make wise decisions regarding our …

Social Services In The Iron Cage, James Latimore Nov 1979

Social Services In The Iron Cage, James Latimore

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Interview and documentary data from a study of a voluntary job placement agency revealed that counselors were effectively weeding out the hard-to-place clients. These clients were the target population of the agency and its funded programs. The clients who were weeded out tended to be younger, with less education and less work experience. Weeding out was accomplished by discouraging unrealistic clients, and by not retrieving clients who were insufficiently motivated to keep in touch with the counselor. This marked a change in the counselors' practice compared with an earlier period, and appeared to be in conflict with the agency's mission, …
