Movement Therapies: Foundations And Applications For Awareness And Growth, Jody Lynn Shotwell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The theoretical and historical foundations of body work and movement therapies are explored. Wilhelm Reich is credited with bringing into prominence the inclusion of the body in psychotherapy. His influence on Alexander Lowen and Fritz Perls is explored in detail. The importance in psychotherapy of breathing, energy, self-expression, spontaneous movement, and awareness is stressed. Six expressive movement therapies -- Gestalt body work, t'ai chi, encounter group exercises, bioenergetic therapy, psychomotor training, and dance therapy -- are described in detail. Locus Of Control As Related To Personality Variables In Special Adolescent Populations, Mary Ellen Moore Kinnaird

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Locus of control refers to the individual's perception of the degree to which he controls the outcome of events in his life through his own behavior. Locus is further defined and related concepts discussed. Literature is reviewed, exploring determinants in the development of personal locus. Distraction And Dissonance: A Model Of The Persuasive Process, Davis Albert Foulger Jan 1977

Distraction And Dissonance: A Model Of The Persuasive Process, Davis Albert Foulger

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

After exploring the successes, failures, and conflicting explanations for results in two communications research traditions, distraction and counter-attitudinal advocacy, an attempt was made to explain these results in terms of a more comprehensive theory. Distractions were organized into classes defined by their strength and relevance to the message, demonstrating how these and other factors affected the persuasiveness of a message. On the basis of this theory an untested class of distractions, cognitive distractions, were hypothesized. This class of distraction, related to cognitive dissonance, was then used to integrate the conflicting research in counter-attitudinal advocacy. On the basis of this theory, …

Behavior Modification Of Depression: A Review Of Theories And Research, Maria Cristina Lema De Cardozo Jan 1977

Behavior Modification Of Depression: A Review Of Theories And Research, Maria Cristina Lema De Cardozo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to find effective ways to treat depression, due to its high incidence and to the severity of its consequences. The first psychological treatment of depression came with the advent of psychoanalysis, but today the theories dealing with the etiology and treatment of depression range from genetic and biological approaches to an existential conceptualization. While briefly reviewing these various current approaches, the primary purpose of this paper is to present the behavioral/social learning approach to the understanding and treatment of depression. The specific theoretical formulations, methods of assessment and treatment approaches characteristic of the behavioral/social learning approach …

Eye Color And Its Possible Relation To Behavior, Debra Lee Hollister Jan 1977

Eye Color And Its Possible Relation To Behavior, Debra Lee Hollister

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A variable that is capable of indicating one's cognitive and motor capacities has been the dream of many researchers. Until recently however, no researcher has seriously considered an independent variable that is obvious among all people regardless of race or culture. This variable is eye color. This paper is a review of the experimental literature in this field and covers many areas including sociability, perception, learning, athletic abilities, and a few medical anomalies. Several alternative hypotheses are also offered as reasons for the obtained correlations. These ideas include culture, learning, and environment. Two other hypotheses are also presented to explain …

An Organizational Communication Analysis Of A Medium-Sized Newspaper, Sara Baldwin Howze Jan 1977

An Organizational Communication Analysis Of A Medium-Sized Newspaper, Sara Baldwin Howze

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A medium-size newspaper in Central Florida was observed for 8 weeks in the Spring and Summer of 1976 and 58 employees interviewed to determine internal communication patterns and measure attitudes toward the communication system, organization and job related variables. A system theory of organizations provided basic theoretical assumptions. Since communication activities occur within the framework of internal organization elements such as structure, objectives, leadership style, reward system, technology, intergroup relations, and individual employee characteristics, those elements were described. Communication activities were reported in terms of message purpose, network traversed, method of diffusion and relationships. Findings indicated that the nature and …

Alcoholism In Women, Sandi Abilock Levine Jan 1977

Alcoholism In Women, Sandi Abilock Levine

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Alcoholism is a serious public health problem. There is strong evidence that the rate of alcoholism, especially among women is increasing. Until recently, there has been very little research on alcoholic women. The recent increase in the number of known female alcoholics may be related to the new liberation and freedoms women have gained. While the research literature does not support the notion of a typical female alcoholic personality type, certain recurrent characteristics have been noted. This paper attempts to document the problems which appear to be related to women who become alcoholics and to look at the variety of …
