The Existence Of Maximal Elements And Equilibria In The Absence Of Transitivity, Ted Bergstrom
The Existence Of Maximal Elements And Equilibria In The Absence Of Transitivity, Ted Bergstrom
Ted C Bergstrom
This paper generalizes results of Ky Fan and Hugo Sonnenschein on the existence of maximal elements for non-transitive binary relations. It proves a generalization of Nash's theorem on the existence of non-cooperative equilibrium. It also shows that existence of competitive equilibrium can be proved as a consequence of the existence of a maximal element for an appropriately chosen binary relation.
The Core When Strategies Are Restricted By Law, Ted Bergstrom
The Core When Strategies Are Restricted By Law, Ted Bergstrom
Ted C Bergstrom
The alpha-core is defined to be the set of feasible allocations such that no coalition can do better for its members by selecting alternative strategies given “worst-case” assumptions about the behavior of other players. This paper explores the way that the alpha-core of a game is affected by restrictions on the legally admissible strategies of the players. It also explores the relation between Lindahl equilibrium and alpha-cores with suitable restrictions on strategies.
German City Planning In The 1920'S: A North American Perspective Of The Frankfurt Experience, John Mullin
German City Planning In The 1920'S: A North American Perspective Of The Frankfurt Experience, John Mullin
John R. Mullin
This paper on German City Planning in the 1920's, represents a North American perspective of the urbanistic experiences of Frankfurt in that period. Tremendous strides and advances were effectuated in virtually all aspects of government, housing policy, open space and town design, prior to the grasping of power by the national socialists. The legacy is an important one, for indeed, many of the great pioneers of early 20th century urbanism worked in Frankfurt, tested their ideas, saw them implemented, and subsequently emigrated from Germany to many parts of the globe, where these experiences followed them.

The Pecalba Tradition In Macedonia, A Case Study, Joel Halpern
The Pecalba Tradition In Macedonia, A Case Study, Joel Halpern
Joel M. Halpern
The following narrative has been excerpted from an account by a pravoslavni (Eastern Orthodox Christian) peasant from a village in the hills above Struga, near Lake Ohrid. It is especially interesting for historical perspective on the social ties and obligations between Orthodox and Moslem villagers, often members of the same village community, particularly with regard to the carrying out of pecalba, the migrant labor pattern characteristic of this region.
Some Perspectives On Balkan Migration Patterns (With Particular Reference To Yugoslavia), Joel Halpern
Some Perspectives On Balkan Migration Patterns (With Particular Reference To Yugoslavia), Joel Halpern
Joel M. Halpern
To understand fully the meaning of contemporary population movements a view of the past is essential. In the period after World War II in the Balkans, mass population movements within countries have been influenced particularly by urban industrial developments. These reflect a delayed process when compared with Western Europe. Within the past decade and a half there has also been a movement of workers from the Balkan countries with open borders - Greece and Yugoslavia - to the labor-deficit countries of Western Europe. These population movements relate not only to altered individual social and economic value systems, but also to …

The Logic Of Protest Action, Herman L. Boschken
The Logic Of Protest Action, Herman L. Boschken
Herman L. Boschken
In recent years, there has been a noticeable growth in political protest involving groups of widely diverging interests. The rising incidence of protest seems paradoxical to the apparent growth of affluence in society. This paper attempts to resolve this paradox by contending that most forms of protest are a function of the degree of separation between (a) the values and goals of those controlling collective decision processes and (b) the diversity of interests and aspirations in segmented society at large. Through protest action, disenfranchised groups are able to impose "external" costs on "establishment" regimes that lead to alteration of the …

What Is The Public Interest, Robert D. Cooter
What Is The Public Interest, Robert D. Cooter
Robert Cooter
The proper foundation of welfare economics is a characterization of the fundamental principles embodied in our moral and legal framework, which constitutes a conception of the public interest. We may use a conception of the public interest as a predictive or expiratory device. We may also use a conception of the public interest as a guide to making policy. Welfare economics should formulate and analyze different conceptions of the public interest. There will always be tension over which one is right, but that does not initiate an academic inquiry.
