The purpose of this project is to present some lesson plans for teachers of English as a second language (ESL) to children in the first years of school to show the potential of numerical concepts to teach ESL. Hopefully reading or looking at the samples in creating units in ESL with numbers as a content matter can give teachers ideas about how to create their own lesson plans using this or different content matter. The project includes a study of the Instructional and Performance Objectives, Teaching Techniques, Visual Aids, as well as Number and Language Games, among other topics.

The ESL Reading course described in this report was conducted for Latin American scholarship students during the summer of 1973 at the School for International Training. Since it was intended to be a supplement to the regular classes of these students, every effort was made to allow the course direction to develop according to the needs of the participants. The Resource Center of the School for International Training's first three-week workshop in methodology for teachers of English as a Second Language was designed to encourage program participants to explore their individual interests independently, to share their ideas and professional experience in a series of ten evening workshops. Materials in the Center included a library of texts and books discussing ESL methodology and theory, collections of games, realia, visual aids for language teaching, and supplies including audio-visual equipment for making original classroom materials. The center was deemed successful, a viable idea for future development.

This project concerns itself with the psychological realities of a non-native teaching a foreign language in the country where the language is spoken. Included are my personal reactions and experiences of eight weeks spent teaching an intensive course of Spanish to North American university students of anthropology in Silvia Cauca, Colombia. Various aspects such as advantages, disadvantages, teaching modifications because of the fact that one is a non-native speaker, personal feelings and student reactions to the fact that they have a non-native teacher are touched upon.
