One-Trial Versus Incremental Learning : A Re-Evaluation Employing Signal Detection Theory, James William Hyams Jul 1972

One-Trial Versus Incremental Learning : A Re-Evaluation Employing Signal Detection Theory, James William Hyams

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was to lend support to either the one-trial or incremental theory of learning by examining the probability of correct responses as a function of prior stimulus exposure. Signal detection theory was employed as the method of analysis. Two experiments tested the theories in a verbal learning task and a psychomotor task. On each of three trials a list of 6 AB pairs or 6 AB distances was presented once, then one of these 6 pairs or distances was tested for recognition. On the recognition test either AB (a previously viewed pair or distance) or …

Memory Facilitation As A Function Of Category Cues And Stimulus List Construction, Janet Sanford Graves Apr 1972

Memory Facilitation As A Function Of Category Cues And Stimulus List Construction, Janet Sanford Graves

Master's Theses

The capacity to effectively reorganize material to be recalled is perhaps the most essential element in the complex retention process (Deese, 1958). A known type of reorganizational procedure which was shown to exist by Boufield (1953) in his investigation of the retention of a randomized word list is the grouping or clustering of associated words. The results of his study clearly indicated that upon immediate recall of a randomized list, related items, that is, items belonging to the same category, are listed together in clusters.

Teacher Use Of Stimulus Discrimination And Response Cost As Techniques For Reducing Socially Maladaptive Student Behaviors In A Secondary Classroom, Thomas J. Doland

Master's Theses

The present study was designed to evaluate the use of two behavior modification techniques in modifying three inappropriate student behaviors in a secondary classroom. T'he two behavior modification techniques employed were 1) response cost, and 2) the teacher 's use of students' names as discriminative stimuli. The subjects were a D-section Junior English class consisting of fourteen boys and five girls of average intelligence, but who were under achieving academically. The contingencies were applied to all students, utilizing a multiple baseline design. In experimental condition I, the teacher informed the class that ten minutes of free time would be available …

Linwood Holton's Long Quest For The Governorship Of Virginia And Its Impact On The Growth Of The Republican Party, Jack R. Hunter

Master's Theses

When the history of Virginia in the 20th Century is written, the emergence of the Republican Party as a force in its political affairs will surely rank among the more important events of the time. It is my purpose to examine this event , chiefly in terms of the role played by Abner Linwood Holton, Jr., in his long and successful effort to win election as Governor of Virginia. It is not my intention to say that Holton alone was responsible for the growth of Republicanism in Virginia in the 1960's, nor to suggest that it would not have come …

A Validation Of The Psychologist's Narrative Report In Predicting "Successful" Bank Managers, Peter Stephen Horos

Master's Theses

Although company selection procedures for managerial personnel vary widely, they frequently contract a psychological consulting firm to assess the applicant's potential. It was generally assumed then, that this professional information would significantly enhance the selection procedures and consequently improve the quality of the organization's managerial population. However, this assumption was made contingent upon the validity of the psychologist's predictions, with which there has been little research to date.

Recognition And Recall As Measures Of Retention On A Paired Associate Task, David F. Prim Jan 1972

Recognition And Recall As Measures Of Retention On A Paired Associate Task, David F. Prim

Master's Theses

Widely disparate findings concerning recognition and recall as indicants of retention have been reported by several independent researchers. To clarify the problem a list of 8 items, composed of letter-number pairs, was presented 5 times by the study-test method to 160 college undergraduates. The list was learned by either recognition or recall and then tested by either a recognition or recall test after 24 hour and 72 hour intervals. Ss were placed in 1 of 5 categories dependent upon the trial the S achieved 100% criterion. A 4 factor ANOV showed recognition scores to be significantly higher at the .05 …
