Sex Differences In Associative Structure, Riley F. Elder Jr. Dec 1968

Sex Differences In Associative Structure, Riley F. Elder Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

First, the history of the concept of associative structure was traced, and various methods of its assessment were reviewed. Included, also, was a survey of word association literature, with emphasis on the most recent studies. Three separate studies followed which were diverse techniques for the assessment of sex differences in associative structure, plus suggestions of some possible reasons--both proximate and remote--for these differences.

The first procedure consisted of an investigation of the Jenkins and Palermo Word Association Norms with respect to sexually distinct responses. This revealed many significantly differing responses, and suggested that the differences were the result of a …

The Effect Of Tonal Proximity Upon The Memory Of A Set Of Tones, William M. Walters Jr. Sep 1968

The Effect Of Tonal Proximity Upon The Memory Of A Set Of Tones, William M. Walters Jr.

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of music to which people respond. Ortmann's finding that the songs of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and R. Strauss are characterized by more frequent use of smaller intervals implies that small intervals are more typical in western music.

In Experiment I random sets of notes were played by the experimenter on a toy xylophone, and the subject was asked to reproduce the set on an identical instrument. The results were that subjects were generally capable of finding the correct notes, but this ability declined as the size of the set …

Operant Conditioning Of Heart Rate Changes In Curarized Rats With Brain Stimulation Reinforcement, David Hothersall Aug 1968

Operant Conditioning Of Heart Rate Changes In Curarized Rats With Brain Stimulation Reinforcement, David Hothersall

Doctoral Dissertations

Many learning theorists have distinguished between autonomic responses which can be conditioned using classical conditioning procedures, and skeletal responses which can be conditioned using operant or instrumental conditioning procedures. In recent years this distinction has been challenged since such autonomic responses as changes in heart rate, GSRs, vasoconstriction and vasodilation, and changes in blood pressure have all been conditioned as operants.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that both increases and decreases in heart rate could be conditioned in groups of curarized rats using an operant conditioning procedure with brain stimulation as the reinforcement for the …

Concept Identification As A Function Of Three Semantic Dimensions, Richard Eugene Edwards Aug 1968

Concept Identification As A Function Of Three Semantic Dimensions, Richard Eugene Edwards

All Master's Theses

It is the purpose of the present study to determine the differential effects of the three primary semantic dimensions on the ability of Ss to solve a concept identification problem. It was hypothesized that the performance level, as measured by a criterion of learning ten successive responses containing no more than one error, time to completion, and the total number of errors, will be higher for Ss working on the evaluative dimension than for Ss working on the potency or activity dimensions. Two additional hypotheses were formulated in an attempt to answer the following questions: 1) Is the ability to …

Verbal Conditioning With Vicarious Reinforcement As Related To Peer Attitudes In Grade-School Children, Margaret Mccutcheon Lauterbach Aug 1968

Verbal Conditioning With Vicarious Reinforcement As Related To Peer Attitudes In Grade-School Children, Margaret Mccutcheon Lauterbach

All Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of peer attitudes toward performers in a verbal conditioning experiment using vicarious reinforcement, and to determine whether birth order or need for social approval had any effect on conditioning. Fifth grade and sixth grade students served as subjects, with performers (those to be directly reinforced) from the same grades as the observers.

The Effect Of Dominance Level When Using Mediated Generalization To Facilitate Concept Formation, Delbert Smith Mchenry Aug 1968

The Effect Of Dominance Level When Using Mediated Generalization To Facilitate Concept Formation, Delbert Smith Mchenry

All Master's Theses

This investigation was concerned with demonstrating differences in order of concept attainment as a function of the degree of association between a concept instance and concept response, using mediated generalization.

Play Preparation For The Adeno-Tonsillectomy Patient, Carol Brown, Harriet Hecker Aug 1968

Play Preparation For The Adeno-Tonsillectomy Patient, Carol Brown, Harriet Hecker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hospitalization and surgery have been recognized as being psychologically stressful for the majority of children. Hospital personnel have attempted to reduce some of the unnecessary psychological stress incurred by children by the use of many different methods. This study attempted to evaluate the use of preoperative play preparation sessions for minimizing this stress. The method was experimental with one variable. The subjects were forty-one children aged three and one-half to seven and one-half who had adeno-tonsillectomies. Twenty-one children comprising Group E were involved in a play session by the researchers. Twenty children were not prepared in this way. The tools …

Physique And The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, Stuart Storey Aug 1968

Physique And The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, Stuart Storey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Young people today are confronted with many problems in their everyday lives. It is difficult to tell how each individual overcomes these problems, but we do know that some problems are overcome more easily than others. This study was concerned with two problem levels, (a) those problems which were merely troublesome, and (b) those problems which were worrying. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physique, which was considered to be one of the major factors influencing attitude and behavior, and the type and number of problem and worry items which high school freshmen students experience. …

Timidity, Emotionality, And Activity In Rats Deprived Of Grooming, Josiah B. Henneberger Jul 1968

Timidity, Emotionality, And Activity In Rats Deprived Of Grooming, Josiah B. Henneberger

Master's Theses

The purpose of this current study was to investigate the effect of restriction of grooming, by means of collars, on activity, emotionality, and timidity. On the basis of the common occurrence of grooming when under stress some relationship between licking and emotionality was assumed to exist by the author. it was therefore expected that differences would be found among the treatment group.

The current study made use of a three factor design. One factor was the treatment factor, another factor was the replications factor, and the third was the days factor. The days factor has repeated measures and the replications …

The Relation Between Measured Intelligence And The Ability To Learn, Robert Stephen Peddicord Jul 1968

The Relation Between Measured Intelligence And The Ability To Learn, Robert Stephen Peddicord

Master's Theses

There are perhaps as many definitions of intelligence as there are definers. However, one definition which has extensive commonsense appeal, according to Simrall (1947), identifies intelligence with the ability to learn, or to profit from experience. Certainly, many practicing psychologists have interpreted intelligence test scores as reflective of an individual's learning ability or potential for future learning. In his address as retiring president of the American Psychological Association, Garrett commented that: "It is undoubtedly true that intelligence involves the ability to learn..." (Garrett, 1946, p. 372).
