University Of Tennessee Library Lectures, 1964-1966 (No. 16-18)

Lecture number sixteen was presented on March 24, 1964, by Mr. James T. Babb, at that time Librarian of Yale University. An Examination Of The Concepts And Critics Of The Theories Of Mass Society, Jeffrey Stephen Margolis Jan 1966

An Examination Of The Concepts And Critics Of The Theories Of Mass Society, Jeffrey Stephen Margolis

Masters Theses

Introduction

The quotations above are representative of the three prominent problems entertained by the theories of mass society; that is, freedom in the polity, freedom in the community, and inner directiveness, or freedom with one's own self. This series of problems involves the totality of existence.

Traditional philosophic speculation, the realm of the totality, demands an examination of man's concept of what he is, and what he is not, of what he sees, and that which he does not see. For the prescription "Know thyself" is not only a panegyric for introspective soul seeking; rather, it is an encomium on …

Priests And Prophets Negro Ministers And Civil Rights (An Investigation Of A Cleveland Sample), Gerhild Framhein-Peisert Jan 1966

Priests And Prophets Negro Ministers And Civil Rights (An Investigation Of A Cleveland Sample), Gerhild Framhein-Peisert

Honors Papers

In the summer of 1966 the racial conflict in the U.S.A. saw a new polarization. The most militant groups in the "Negro Revolt" joined in a call for "Black Power", a call that emerged on the Mississippi march in July; for them; "Black power" has succeeded the former slogan of "Freedom Now". The concept of Black Power is not, however, a completely new phenomenon. "It has grown out of the ferment of agitation and activity by different people and organizations in many black communities over the years."

Humane Education Of The Next Generation Of Americans, Stuart Westerlund Jan 1966

Humane Education Of The Next Generation Of Americans, Stuart Westerlund

Education Collection

In the process of education, three major aspects stand out sharply: philosophy, psychology, and evaluation. It is through philosophy of education that we establish goals and objectives. In other words, where are we going? What do we want? What is really important? Without a philosophy we wander aimlessly in the vast desert known as "no man's land." Psychology speaks of methodology, the means whereby we might achieve our goals; it is the instrument by which we hope to achieve our objectives. Without a methodology we are like a ship without a rudder. We may know where we want to go, …

Our Pet Population Explosion And Operation Spared, Kay Clausing Jan 1966

Our Pet Population Explosion And Operation Spared, Kay Clausing

Pets Collection

All humane societies are dedicated to preventing cruelty and suffering. No society can effectively prevent cruelty unless it makes spaying compulsory for all females released for adoption and talks spaying to every owner of a female. Even if the home is a good one in every other respect, if a female is permitted to produce even one litter, the humane society is simply delaying or postponing cruelty. In fact, it is perpetuating it. When the female (which your society otherwise placed so carefully) has a litter, often its owners are not qualified to judge what constitutes a good home. In …

Use Of The Legislative Process In Protecting Animals, Hugh Mcnamee Jan 1966

Use Of The Legislative Process In Protecting Animals, Hugh Mcnamee

Laws and Legislation Collection

The statements that I shall make in this address are based upon experience gained by me as a lawyer, and as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. That experience was applied to the successful pioneer attempt to enact the Ohio Rodeo Law of which I was the author and the pilot. Ohio is the first state in which a law has been passed to prohibit certain cruelty practices prevalent in rodeos and thus virtually eliminate them as a medium of public entertainment.

The origin of legislation is in some comprehension of a condition that needs correction by law. …

The Challenges Of Leadership, R. J. Chenoweth Jan 1966

The Challenges Of Leadership, R. J. Chenoweth

Animal Welfare Collection

When a great and demanding need exists in any field of endeavor, it is a historical fact that men of intelligence, integrity and goodwill will find a way to fill that need. Like a rudderless ship, in 1954, the American humane movement was drifting without course or compass in a sea of indifference to animal welfare and outright cruelty for man's personal gain. National animal welfare work had languished for years; there was little direction to humane work at the state and local levels. The humane movement had become, in the eyes of an apathetic public, synonymous with cat and …

The Zadruga: An Anglo-American View Of Balkan Social Structures, Joel Halpern Jan 1966

The Zadruga: An Anglo-American View Of Balkan Social Structures, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

This paper concentrates on the South Slav extended family as viewed by observers writing in English, principally British and American. Specifically included are the writings of nineteenth century travelers and, in the twentieth century, the observations of ethnographers, sociologists and anthropologists. These are compared to analyses made by Slavic scholars. Most of the material is from Yugoslavia, and data from Bulgaria is also included.
