An Experimental Investigation On The Theoretical Development Of Conditioned Inhibition, Daniel B. Felker

Student Work

The Hullian Intervening variables, reactive Inhibition (IR) and conditioned inhibition (SIR) have, like many other Hullian intervening variables, generated large amounts of research as reported in the psychological literature. These views of Hull are presented systematically in two of a proposed three-book system.

The Effects Of Failure And Achievement Imagery On A Paired Associates Verbal Learning Task, Warren Daniels Bloodsworth

Master's Theses

Concern over the effects of failure on performance has led many researchers to experimental investigation of this problem. However, a review of the literature indicated that the exact effects of failure are still not known. The results of most studies have shown a decrement in performance or learning following failure hill others have found either no effect or an increment.

Psychology ETDs

Five albino rats were selected at random each week of the experiment from the general colony. The S's were placed in isolated cages for 72 hours with a ten gram-per-day diet of Purina Chow. These five rats were selected for inclusion in the experiment if they gave 9 out of 10 single-handed reaches with the unbiased dish on their first day of training. Any animals not reaching this criterion were discarded.

An Investigation Of The Correlations Between Years Of Service In Pastoral Work And The Scores Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, C. L. Wessman

Student Work

In the August Twentieth issue of Life Magazine an article appeared entitled, “Why Ministers Are Breaking Down.”1 Three months later, the Christian Century answered this article in Life with “Are Ministers Cracking Up?”2 The conclusions of these two articles were in disagreement. However, they were alike in that they were based upon personal observations of a few cases and not upon careful study. Since then other periodicals have carried like articles written in like style.3 A casual examination of the books on a minister’s personal problems in the library of any theological seminary will manifest the same …

A Content Analysis Of Self-Reliance Or Dependence In A Sixth Grade Reading Text-Book, Roxilu Kelton Bohrer Jun 1962

A Content Analysis Of Self-Reliance Or Dependence In A Sixth Grade Reading Text-Book, Roxilu Kelton Bohrer

Student Work

Traditionally, our nation has been one in which individual effort and enterprise are rewarded. Our “log cabin” heroes, our “Horatio Alger” stories, are a reflection of a cultural tradition of interdependence and self-reliance which we cherish. Most of us fondly recall the story of the little train engine who said, “I think I can, I think I can,” and managed to puff over the hill.1 This little train showed self-reliance and independence in reaching his goal. By contrast, a recent children’s book tells about a little locomotive who goes to school to learn to be a big locomotive and …

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Educational Placement Of Mentally Retarded Children In A Special Class, Kenneth Warren Jun 1962

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Educational Placement Of Mentally Retarded Children In A Special Class, Kenneth Warren

Doctoral Dissertations

The number of Special Education classes for the educable mentally retarded has increased tremendously during the past several years. Implicit within this expansion is the assumption that for the educable mentally retarded such placement offers an environment superior to any other type of placement. In this environment the child is expected to gain greater benefits academically, socially, and perhaps even emotionally. There is some evidence to support this belief, but there have been few studies investigating the differences that result from placing a child in a special class rather than retaining him in a regular class.

The present attempt of …

Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban Jun 1962

Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of the study was to·make· a comparison of the drunk driving behavior of college students with that· of those persons in a similar age group who have not had college experience. There is very little published information about the statutes governing "driving under the influence of liquor" (D.U.I.L.). The educable nature of persons involved in such offenses 8 and the probable anti-social and sociopathic behavior in individuals leading up to the offenses, also need thorough investigation. Very pertinent also is the question whether or not there is a biological basis for this particular behavior; an understanding of …

Psychological And Biochemical Mechanisms Of Schizoprenia, Bruce Macpherson May 1962

Psychological And Biochemical Mechanisms Of Schizoprenia, Bruce Macpherson

Senior Scholar Papers

Schizophrenia is a disease whose physical cause is unknown despite the attempts of several research teams to discover a physical basis for it. Some success has been gained in genetic studies which indicate that schizophrenia is an inherited disability. However, since research tools are at present so sadly inadequate, the value of pursuing a genetic line of reasoning is questionable. To compensate for the lack of biochemical certainties in treating mental illness, psychological theories have been constructed to explain the schizophrenia syndrome. Normal personality is seen as the resultant of environmental and inherited influences. Involved in the formation of personality …

An Evaluation Of Social Stars, Regulars, Neglectees, And Isolates In Ability-Grouped And Random-Grouped Classrooms, Benjamin W. Standing May 1962

An Evaluation Of Social Stars, Regulars, Neglectees, And Isolates In Ability-Grouped And Random-Grouped Classrooms, Benjamin W. Standing

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Education in the United States attempts to present maximum opportunities for learning in a democratic atmosphere. Many great educators have sought means to accomplish this end. Today, because of the stimulating force of other nations, even greater pressure is being brought to bear to achieve these goals. The plan of grouping pupils according to their abilities has been presented as one way to facilitate learning.

Ability grouping is the assigning of pupils who are essentially alike to special grade levels and to parallel sections of the same grade. Although it may be thought that ability grouping is a new procedure, …

A Comparison Of Aspiration Levels Of Students In Ability-Grouped And Randomly-Grouped Schools, George Aaron Jeffs May 1962

A Comparison Of Aspiration Levels Of Students In Ability-Grouped And Randomly-Grouped Schools, George Aaron Jeffs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Grouping students with in the school setting has long been a concern to all those associated with the educative process. Much investigation has been devoted to the position of level of aspiration as influential motive forces for educational, occupational, and social achievement. Many avenues of grouping have been investigated and some very thoroughly. However, research concerning grouping in relation to level of aspiration in the school setting appears to be extremely limited. This study is designed to further investigate this issue. It might be said that this study consists of essentially two phases: (1) the development of instruments for measuring …

Educational Grouping And Students' Self Concept, John N. Giboney May 1962

Educational Grouping And Students' Self Concept, John N. Giboney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of ability grouping in education has achieved prominence, especially in recent years. Much of the emphasis placed on grouping students according to ability rather than chronological age is a product of modern times and progressive education. Although not accepted by all educators, there is a definite movement toward such a procedure in public schools today. It is held by the advocates of ability grouping that students will benefit more in a situation where they proceed at a rate prescribed by their ability rather than a hypothetical average or norm. Several well-controlled studies (3, 33, 44) have shown that …

An Analysis Of The Achievement Gains Made By Students In Ability-Grouped Vs. Random-Grouped Classroom Units, Luan H. Ferrin May 1962

An Analysis Of The Achievement Gains Made By Students In Ability-Grouped Vs. Random-Grouped Classroom Units, Luan H. Ferrin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Because of the rapid advancements being made in the field of knowledge, educators, as well as those in other fields, must periodically take inventory. Current practices, policies, and methods must be carefully scrutinized to determine if they are the most effective. The group or class method of instruction is one such area.

A Comparison Of Underachievers And Normal Achievers At The Upper-Elementary And Seventh-Grade Level, M. Nephi Manning May 1962

A Comparison Of Underachievers And Normal Achievers At The Upper-Elementary And Seventh-Grade Level, M. Nephi Manning

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

That each is born with differing capacities and potentials is self-evident. Both students and teachers should accept as their right and duty the task of bringing to full fruition these latent potentialities.

It is a cause of concern in the nation, among parents and teachers, and in later years among students themselves, that many of our youth fail to achieve that of which they are capable. This is a loss to society and a disappointment to the individual.

The purpose of this study is to add to the growing fund of knowledge concerning factors related to this important area of …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Elementary School Grouping Practices On Selected Personality Variables, Clarence D. Swaner May 1962

A Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Elementary School Grouping Practices On Selected Personality Variables, Clarence D. Swaner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relative advantages or disadvantages associated with the practice of grouping school children according to ability level has long been the subject of considerable discussion among educators. The general tendency has been for educators to divide into two camps: Those who expound the various merits of homogeneous grouping, and those who favor and support heterogeneous grouping practices. Less common, but acknowledged, are those educators who favor a combination of the two methods. Research dealing with the relative value of either method has usually been concerned with only one aspect of the problem--that of academic achievement. However, the efforts of several …

The Secondary Reinforcing Effects Of Two Goal Box Cues, Clinton L. Trafton Jan 1962

The Secondary Reinforcing Effects Of Two Goal Box Cues, Clinton L. Trafton

Psychology ETDs

Mowrer (1960) views secondary reinforcement as not only real phenomenon, but as an important learning mechanism. He states that "habit strength is stimuli with secondary reinforcement capacity and that a 'habit' is strong or weak, not as a function of the Sd-R1 (drive stimulus-intstrumental response) 'bond', but as a function of how many of the stimuli produced by a response possess how much of this so-called reinforcing potential." (italics his, p. 228). This discussion by Mowrer, together with a consideration of the research reported above, led the present writer to wonder whether several different stimuli (in the …
