A Study Of School Desegregation: Self-Prediction Of Behavior And Correlates Of Self-Prediction, Wyman Loren Williams
A Study Of School Desegregation: Self-Prediction Of Behavior And Correlates Of Self-Prediction, Wyman Loren Williams
Doctoral Dissertations
(From the Introduction)
On January 11, 1955, the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission directed the school system at Oak Ridge, Tennessee to desegregate beginning with the school year of 1955-1956. Although in general the school system officials felt that the community as a whole would be receptive to this procedure, research oriented toward the anticipation of problems that might arise as a result of the desegregation process was inaugurated by the Philosophy and Psychology Department at the University of Tennessee. The research that developed from this request is reported herein.

Language And Non-Linguistic Behavior: An Experimental Investigation, Howard S. Maclay
Anthropology ETDs
The purpose of the investigation is twofold: to test experimentally the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis that non-linguistic behavior is conditioned by the nature of the language spoken; and to provide information on the use of experimental methods in cross-cultural studies.
Factors Influencing The Operation Of Special Double-Number Dials, Ryoko Yafuso
Factors Influencing The Operation Of Special Double-Number Dials, Ryoko Yafuso
Psychology ETDs
A concise definition of engineering psychology is: the study of human behavior in the man-machine relationship (3). In implementing this concept the engineering psychologist not only investigates the human factors involved in man-machine systems, but he also attempts to discover the best way to design a machine so that a human being can operate it most efficiently.
The Relationship Between Personality Factors And Musical Taste, Joe Dean Brower
The Relationship Between Personality Factors And Musical Taste, Joe Dean Brower
Psychology ETDs
This study is an attempt to distinguish personality factors which may influence persons in their preferences for a particular kind of music.
It is not the purpose of this study to investigate the personality of individuals who happen to prefer a special type of music. Instead, the study is focused on personality differences which may be found among three groups of people who have indicated a preference for three different types of music.
A Comparative Study Of The Readability Of The King James Version Of The Bible And The New Standard Revision Of The Bible, Dwight Robert Miller
A Comparative Study Of The Readability Of The King James Version Of The Bible And The New Standard Revision Of The Bible, Dwight Robert Miller
Student Work
For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the relative reading ease of different versions of the Bible, the majority of the arguments made by the various factions have been based upon limited observation, and in no instance has experimental evidence been presented to support the contentions of any group.
The Organization And Administration Of The Noon-Time Program At Pasco High School, Russell A. Wiseman
The Organization And Administration Of The Noon-Time Program At Pasco High School, Russell A. Wiseman
Graduate Student Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to establish a program that would enable Pasco High School students to more adequately make use or noon-hour leisure and to facilitate their wiser use of leisure time in the future. To more clearly picture the program organized and to understand the historical material, various terms were introduced tor clarification so as to discriminate concepts and ideas advanced by various authors. Education terminology in many cases differed, but the intention of the writers was generally the same. The ideas of the study were framed in light of those statements.
Charles Lynch, Originator Of The Term Lynch Law, Gordon Godfrey Fralin
Charles Lynch, Originator Of The Term Lynch Law, Gordon Godfrey Fralin
Master's Theses
Short sketches bearing activities and incidents in the life of Charles Lynch are frequently found in books dealing with the history of lynch law, in genealogies of colonial Virginians, in histories of Lynchburg, Virginia, or in scattered contributions to magazines. Each of these sources contains fundamentally the same information, (i.e., a list or his political offices, reputation as a zealous patriot, and his association with the term: lynch law), although there is some variation to be found. The purpose of this paper, therefore, has been to bring together all the miscellaneous bits of information pertaining to Charles Lynch which are already …

An Appraisal Of Techniques Employed In Occupational Wage Surveys For Communities, Henry Wilson Maglidt
An Appraisal Of Techniques Employed In Occupational Wage Surveys For Communities, Henry Wilson Maglidt
Economics ETDs
For some years the writer has noticed that studies of wage rates available for general use pertain to wage conditions by industry on a national or regional basis. Literature on the subject bears upon methods employed in studies on a wide scale, or on studies of large cities or important concentrated industrial centers. There appears to be a dearth of literature on the subject of conducting wage surveys on a community basis in the smaller cities and less populated areas. Therefore, in the Fall of 1951, the writer, in connection with graduate work and the University of New Mexico, undertook …
The Evolution Of The New Mexico Bureau Of Revenue, 1920-1955, Joseph Francis Palaia
The Evolution Of The New Mexico Bureau Of Revenue, 1920-1955, Joseph Francis Palaia
Political Science ETDs
The Bureau of Revenue of the State of New Mexico is one governmental division whose activities affect most of the people in the state, even to the child whose twenty-five cent purchase of candy or a toy calls for an additional fraction of a cent for sales tax. However, the organization, work, and effectiveness of the Bureau of Revenue are virtual mysteries to the majority of persons whose economic life it determines in some degree.
Activity And T-Maze Performance Of The White Rat As A Function Of Drive And Apparatus, Paschal Neilson Strong Jr.
Activity And T-Maze Performance Of The White Rat As A Function Of Drive And Apparatus, Paschal Neilson Strong Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
[From the Introduction]
In the usual psychological experiment certain operations are performed upon the organisms being studied and a certain portion of the total responses are measured. The operations performed upon the organism may be roughly divided into two classes, those which are systematically varied and define the various experi mental groups, and those which are held constant across groups. Certain lawful relationships are then determined between those operations which are varied and the responses measured. Those operations which are held constant are considered to be factors which may also affect the responses being measured. It is usually …
A Study Of Factors That Discriminate Between Different Degrees Of Religiousness In People, Stuart W. Omohundro
A Study Of Factors That Discriminate Between Different Degrees Of Religiousness In People, Stuart W. Omohundro
Master's Theses
The first question that will probably confront the reader of this paper will be, what is meant by religiousness, be measured or compared between personalities or groups? The same question has been asked of psychologists about other terms such as intelligence and emotion, either of which could be substituted in the title of this paper and still not make it any clearer. The answers to this question have varied except where operational definitions have been demanded, which, of course, boil down to emotional or intellectual behavior as measured by a given test in relationship to others taking the test. Religiousness …

A Study Of Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman On The Elections Of 1936 And 1940, Betty Sanford Molster
Honors Theses
Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman was the Virginia-born editor of The Richmond News Leader from 1915 to 1949. He is also widely known as the author of several historical works--notably a biography of R.E. Lee for which he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1934, and a biography of George Washington which he had not quite finished at the time of his death in 1953.
This thesis is an attempt to discuss the views held by Dr. Freeman on the Presidential elections of 1936 and 1940. The only source of information used was his editorials during those two years. I have attempted …
The New Mexico Bureau Of Revenue., Ralph Carlisle Smith
The New Mexico Bureau Of Revenue., Ralph Carlisle Smith
Political Science ETDs
Commissioner Corlett upon appointment in 1951 immediately undertook a program of streamlining the Bureau. About the same time, the New Mexico State Reorganization Committee, the so-called Little Hoover Commission, was established by the 1951 Legislature, and the staff of that committee undertook a simultaneous study of the Bureau. This thesis covers the New Mexico State Reorganization Committee staff study conducted by the author, during which study a number of recommendations were made for executive and legislative changes in the Bureau of Revenue, as well as the action taken during the ensuing period (to April, 1955), including the legislative actions in …
A Study Of Unionism In The Broadcasting And Television Industries, Noel Martin Daniel
A Study Of Unionism In The Broadcasting And Television Industries, Noel Martin Daniel
Economics ETDs
It is the purpose of the thesis on the basis of the evidence presented to demonstrate that technological development in the television industry resolves both the jurisdictional and unemployment problems. Rather than resorting to immediate objectives in their collective bargaining agreements with employers the unions should promote long-term programs consistent with technological change. In their historical patterns of collective bargaining the unions have not demonstrated this broad point of view. On the other hand management in the broadcasting-telecasting industry shares with labor this responsibility in meeting the problems of technological change. Too often management has been concerned with limiting the …

Sociology ETDs
It was the purpose of this study (1) to gather information which would allow certain concepts of Industrial Sociology to be examined under research conditions as pertaining to social mobility in a relatively little known occupation; (2) to collect data which would establish an occupation hierarchy and indicate intra-occupational vertical and horizontal mobility among used automobile salesmen; and (3) to discover the relationship of occupational inheritance to the occupation of used automobile salesmen.
An Approach To The Study Of Non-Literate Law In Three North American Societies, Elizabeth C. Funk
An Approach To The Study Of Non-Literate Law In Three North American Societies, Elizabeth C. Funk
Anthropology ETDs
Attempts to clarify the problem of law among non-literate peoples has been largely one of isolating with accuracy its distinguishing characteristics. Non-literate law is not written down or codified. Often, it is not sustained by any formal police force, and courts are lacking. Legislation, in the proper sense of the term, may be an attribute of developed legal systems only

Comparison Of The Utah State Agricultural College Mathematics Entrance Examination Computational Form Versus Multiple-Choice, Wilson Walker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is the standard practice in colleges and universities to administer to all entering students a battery of tests which are designed to measure the aptitude and ability of students. Each institution uses in its test battery those tests which are best suited to its particular needs, but in the main they consist of measures of general mental ability, the ability to understand and use the English language and the ability to understand and to use mathematical symbols. These tests are available to the institution through companies which construct and standardize tests of all kinds. In addition to these tests, …

An Economic Analysis Of Alfalfa Seed Production Costs And Returns In Utah, 1952, Jack B. Goodwin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in the United States and a crop vital to the livestock industry. It is the ideal to which other hay crops are compared. In terms of total digestable nutrients and as an economical source of these nutrients, it is without equal. Other features in which alfalfa excels over other hay crops as a forage are: high yield, palatability, high protein and calcium content, and value as a source of vitamins A and D (4, p. 340). In addition it has great value in soil conservation practices for controlling erosion losses and nitrogen depletion. …

The Economic Impact Of Hill Air Force Base On The Ogden Area, John D. Mcconahay
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The people of Utah saw the first federal military installation established in the area almost a century ago. They were not pleased in 1857 when they heard that President Buchanan was sending some 2500 soldiers to set up camp in the Salt Lake Valley. As the troops approached the Territory, every available means was used to resist their advance. Trenches and other defenses were prepared and all forage burned on the routes to the Valley to hamper or prevent their approach (17, p.303). When the troops arrived in 1858 they were permitted to enter the territory of Utah without further …

The Influence Of Max Weber And Emile Durkheim On Current American Sociology, Medard Mitchell
Sociology ETDs
The problem involved in this study is to determine as precisely as possible, through the use of a systematic method, (1) the nature and the influence of [Max] Weber and [Emile] Durkheim on American sociology; (2) the fields of American sociology that have been influenced by these men; (3) and finally, if there is an existent trend toward the greater use and concepts of these two men by American sociologists in recent years.
This work aims at a quantitative definition of the form and nature the influence of Weber and Durkheim takes in American Sociology rather than a qualitative evaluation …

An Experimental Investigation Of Lashley And Wade's "The Pavlovian Theory Of Generalization", Allen B. Madans
Psychology ETDs
In the following paper, the term "stimulus generalization" will appear many times. As a matter of convenience it will be abbreviated to "SG".
The best type of definition to give for SG is an operational one. Although the operational definition loses its generality, it gains by providing at least one concrete illustration of the phenomenon with which this paper deals. The following illustration is taken from the experimental literature in most part, and it is the type of illustration that is recognized both by those for and those against SG as demonstrating the phenomenon of SG...Despite the great amount of …

The Contiguity Principle And The Skaggs-Robinson Hypothesis, Junius M. Rowe
Doctoral Dissertations
Introduction: Abbreviated
The laws governing acquisition and maintenance of behavior have occupied learning theorists in psychology for many years with the result that a great deal of data are available which demonstrate various factors influencing the acquisition of both simple and complex habits. Among the hundreds of factors now known to influence learning, similarity between original and interpolated material has received much attention in retroactive and proactive inhibition settings. The interference effects of these processes with varying degrees of similarity were first stated in 1920 by Woodworth and Poffenberger (23) and separately by Foucault (23) in 1928.

Professional Performance Of Y.M.C.A. Senior Secretaries, Related To Factors Of Their Intelligence, Personal Values, And Interests, Cecil Fayette Mcgee
Student Work
The problem of selecting social service executives by government organizations and social service agencies has long been an important one. Other organizations directing the efforts of people need to know what qualities characterize successful social service executives. Social service executives administer and supervise many activities which involve the time and effort of other people. They should, therefore, be carefully selected so that the objectives of their employing organizations may be effectively and economically achieved.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether any relationship exists between performance ratings of Young Men’s Christian Association Senior Secretaries and their intelligence, personal …
