It is the standard practice in colleges and universities to administer to all entering students a battery of tests which are designed to measure the aptitude and ability of students. Each institution uses in its test battery those tests which are best suited to its particular needs, but in the main they consist of measures of general mental ability, the ability to understand and use the English language and the ability to understand and to use mathematical symbols. The people of Utah saw the first federal military installation established in the area almost a century ago. They were not pleased in 1857 when they heard that President Buchanan was sending some 2500 soldiers to set up camp in the Salt Lake Valley. As the troops approached the Territory, every available means was used to resist their advance. Trenches and other defenses were prepared and all forage burned on the routes to the Valley to hamper or prevent their approach (17, p.303). Cattle finishing is an enterprise involving the feeding of cattle to improve their slaughter condition. This can be accomplished by gazing cattle on pasture alone, by supplementing pasture with concentrated feeds, and by feeding harvested crops to cattle in yards. The latter method is one commonly used in Utah.

The study to be reported in the following pages is an exploratory investigation of the social experiences, adjustments, and attitudes of Iranian students at the Utah State Agricultural College. It was devised as a preliminary, not a terminal, investigation. Two possible avenues of further research were considered when the scope of the study was delimited.

  1. A study of the social experience and adjustment of all foreign students in Logan, irrespective of nationality.
  2. A study of the social experience and adjustment of Iranian students--in the United States and after their return home--irrespective of school attended in the United States.

Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in the United States and a crop vital to the livestock industry. It is the ideal to which other hay crops are compared. In terms of total digestable nutrients and as an economical source of these nutrients, it is without equal. Other features in which alfalfa excels over other hay crops as a forage are: high yield, palatability, high protein and calcium content, and value as a source of vitamins A and D (4, p. 340). In addition it has great value in soil conservation practices for controlling erosion losses and nitrogen depletion. …
