Corporatism In American Foreign Policy Toward Germany Between The Wars, 1921-1936, William R. Martin May 1992

Corporatism In American Foreign Policy Toward Germany Between The Wars, 1921-1936, William R. Martin

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an investigation of how United States foreign policy was made in the context of German-American relations in the period between the two world wars. The problem under investigation is whether the United States was using a corporatist approach in dealing with the problems of Germany and ultimately Europe and whether the corporatist model is a good one for analyzing foreign policy development during this period. Corporatism, as it is used in this thesis, is defined as an organizational form which recognizes privately organized functional groups outside the United States government, which collaborate with the government to share …

The Development Of A Predictive Model Of Pretrial Misconduct, Donald R. Trapp May 1992

The Development Of A Predictive Model Of Pretrial Misconduct, Donald R. Trapp

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of jail overcrowding has forced corrections officials and jail administrators to examine ways in which to better manage available jail space. Pretrial release and detention policies have been a target of this examination as pretrial defendants typically account for 50% of a jail's population. Standards for pretrial release exist, but their administration varies by jurisdiction. The impact of jail overcrowding on pretrial release policies has been to decrease the time available to render a decision. Recent efforts to standardize pretrial release standards in Oregon have not addressed the issue of expediency. The current study examines pretrial misconduct (failure …

A Cycle Of Crisis And Violence : The Oregon State Penitentiary, 1866-1968, Joseph Willard Laythe May 1992

A Cycle Of Crisis And Violence : The Oregon State Penitentiary, 1866-1968, Joseph Willard Laythe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines seven crises at the Oregon State Penitentiary between 1866 and 1968 which are symptomatic of a larger pathology of power at play at the institution. These prison crises brought the pathology of power out from behind the thick grey walls of the institution and to the eyes and ears of an uninformed public. This arousal of such attention forced the prison to re-evaluate its penal model, enact half-hearted reforms, but then resume to the institution's traditional pattern and style of punishment. This inability to address the crises or resolve the immediate problem points to a larger problem--namely …

A Comparison Of Two Kindergarten Screening Instruments In One Population, Therese Marie Westrup May 1992

A Comparison Of Two Kindergarten Screening Instruments In One Population, Therese Marie Westrup

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare thirty-two childrens' performances on the Daberon-2 Screening for School Readiness and the Early Screening Inventory, as well as determine whether there was a correlation between the tests. This study responded to the needs of the local Portland, Oregon area schools, some of which use these tests, to investigate the tests, and explore the possibility of using the shorter ESI over the longer Daberon. The reasoning behind the goal of the study was to determine that if the two tests showed a strong, positive correlation and identified the same children as needing further …

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone May 1992

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This study investigates two congregations among Churches of Christ with a prototype instrument adapted from questions used in a national survey (The Unchurched American, The Princeton Religion Research Center, 1978). The ministry objective for this project thesis is to generate an assessment instrument to be used as a tool for ministry between active and inactive church members.

Specific questions addressed are: what are the patterns of disengagement and re-entry in two local congregations connected with Churches of Christ? Is the disengagement of teenagers and young adults (age 13-24) in each local congregation measurably greater than other recognized age categories over …

The Relationship Between Pain Locus Of Control And Treatment Adherence At Long-Term Follow-Up From An Interdisciplinary Pain Center, Lisa J. Wall May 1992

The Relationship Between Pain Locus Of Control And Treatment Adherence At Long-Term Follow-Up From An Interdisciplinary Pain Center, Lisa J. Wall

Student Work

Locus of control is a cognitive construct that can be quantified and used in conjunction with other social learning theory variables to predict human social behavior. Previous research suggests that when a person perceives rewards and punishments as being contingent upon personal actions, (i.e. they possess an internal locus of control) behavior is quite different compared to when such reinforcements are perceived to occur independently of personal efforts and characteristics.

Pain is one of many areas in which there has been a significant amount of interest in relating locus of control health beliefs to a variety of relevant behaviors. Whether …

Morphology Of Saw Marks In Human Bone: Identification Of Class Characteristics, Steven A. Symes May 1992

Morphology Of Saw Marks In Human Bone: Identification Of Class Characteristics, Steven A. Symes

Doctoral Dissertations

Accurate interpretation of saw marks on human bone is an essential part of tool mark examination in the forensic sciences, but appears neglected in practice and in the forensic sciences literature. With a basic understanding of saws and principals of cutting action, residual saw characteristics remaining on human bone can be recognized and interpreted.

Two basic areas of saw cut bones are examined. Kerf floors can be examined in false starts and break away spurs. This area of a cut potentially reveals kerf size, striae patterns, and contour differences. Kerf walls, or the cut cross section of bones, reveal striae …

The Attributes Of Leadership In Southern Baptist Churches In West Texas, Tim Winn May 1992

The Attributes Of Leadership In Southern Baptist Churches In West Texas, Tim Winn

Student Dissertations & Theses

This study deals with leadership attributes in Southern Baptist churches in West Texas. A review of literature indicated that leadership in the congregations would tend to reflect the perceived purposes of the group, would be elected by the church or arise to counter poor leadership by the elected leader(s), probably be relationship oriented, and that the selection of leaders would be affected by the size of the churches and the length of tenure of the pastors. The study attempted to determine if there were characteristics that set leaders apart from non leaders in the churches. Six variable clusters of characteristics …

Virginia Annexations As Metropolitan Reform Movements : Are They Obsolete?, Demetra Yeapanis Kontos May 1992

Virginia Annexations As Metropolitan Reform Movements : Are They Obsolete?, Demetra Yeapanis Kontos

Master's Theses

The proliferation of local governments and single-purpose regional governmental districts has given local and state government administrators throughout the country many problems. The multiplicity of governments exacerbates conflicts of authority, duplication of services, inadequate service levels, and many other problems. Three basic metropolitan reforms have been implemented to solve these problems: consolidation, disintegration and regional organization. Each of these types of reform has been implemented in Virginia. The most controversial of these reforms is annexation, a form of consolidation where an independent city annexes county land. What contributes to the controversy of annexation movements is that unlike most states, Virginia's …

Churches, Church Development Agencies And American Foreign Policy In Nicaragua : A Case Study, Michael Thomas Kuchinsky May 1992

Churches, Church Development Agencies And American Foreign Policy In Nicaragua : A Case Study, Michael Thomas Kuchinsky

Master's Theses

Churches and church agencies have always been involved in American public and political life. These involvements exhibited cooperation and common interest. An example of this includes the combined efforts to help European refugees following World War II.

Since then, churches have challenged their partnership with government. Sensitivity to Third World issues, theologies of liberation, ideologies of oppression, and the values malaise brought on by the Vietnam War separated some interests of American churches and their government. What would churches do when confronted with an American foreign policy they considered immoral and oppressive?

The hypotheses of Robert Sullivan and Jorgen Lissner …

Chinese Foreign Policy In Changing Perspective--A Case Study Of The Three World Doctrine, Guojun Xu May 1992

Chinese Foreign Policy In Changing Perspective--A Case Study Of The Three World Doctrine, Guojun Xu

Master's Theses

China has in recent years embarked on a fresh policy of close cooperation with her former antagonists, the Western countries, not only in economic areas, but also on social, military and political issues. Does this mean that China has given up her highly publicized third world position? Or did China ever genuinely belong with the third world in the past? These questions are explored in the thesis through careful analyses of the origins of China's foreign policies as well as comparative observations of their applications to different countries at different stages. Rather than isolating individual variables, as some writers do, …

Generic Strategies, Leader Attributes, Environmental Uncertainty, And Organizational Performance: An Empirical Investigation Of Contingencies And Configurational Outcomes, Tope Adeyemi-Bello May 1992

Generic Strategies, Leader Attributes, Environmental Uncertainty, And Organizational Performance: An Empirical Investigation Of Contingencies And Configurational Outcomes, Tope Adeyemi-Bello

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The implications of strategy, environmental uncertainty, and leader attributes to the performance of organizations have been the subject of many research studies. The traditional interaction-based contingency approach that has typically been used in the management literature for examining the interrelationships between these variables, may very often be inadequate to capture the overall pattern of fit among them. A contemporary approach that allows researchers to examine sophisticated relationships between variables is configuration or systems theory— which suggests that inevitable relationships exist between strategic, environmental, contextual, and organizational variables and performance. This study used both the interaction and configuration-based approaches to determine …

A Profile Of Child Care Services Offered At Land-Grant Institutions, Mary E. Bissonette May 1992

A Profile Of Child Care Services Offered At Land-Grant Institutions, Mary E. Bissonette

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A survey was created and distributed to land-grant institutions to determine the availability and description of child care services at those institutions. Participants were 70 directors of child care centers or central administrators at land-grant institutions. Thirty-nine questions provided general demographic information, general information regarding child care programs at each institution, and specific information regarding administrative concerns and quality issues in child care (based on the components of quality from the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, 1984) in both full- and half-day programs. The results yielded information that all of us in a university setting may find compelling. Most …

Transition For Early Intervention Programs Under Part H Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act P. L. 101-476, Kozette Tanner

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Education of the Handicapped Act Amendment of 1968 (Public Law 99-457) has been cited as one of the major factors in national policy for educating young children with disabilities nationwide. It offers eligible families and children the right that, through program implementation, dissemination, research, model demonstrations, teacher training, and technical assistance, all will obtain free and appropriate special education services (Mack, 1988). Public influence on the educational system has come from parents with handicapped children and advocacy groups who have an invested interest in this population. However, only in the past three decades has the federal government exerted any …

Current Child Care Strategies Of Twenty-Five States And Summary Recommendations For Future Child Care Services In Utah Based On Recommendations From The Governor's Task Force On Child Care, Cheryl Elliot-Robinson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Social and employment changes have occurred in the United States over the past twenty years that have had a drastic impact on the "traditional" American family. Americans now live in an era of inflation and economic change in which a second family income is often a necessity just to maintain.an adequate standard of living. Mothers' are no longer waiting until their youngest child enters elementary school to enter or re-enter the labor force. By 1985, 57% of mothers' of children under the age of six were in the labor force, whereas in 1950, only 12% were employed (Department of Labor, …

Economic Comparison Of Selected Processing Alternatives For Alfalfa, Dan J. Bates May 1992

Economic Comparison Of Selected Processing Alternatives For Alfalfa, Dan J. Bates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Processing alfalfa for export is of significant interest to areas like Millard County, the largest hay-producing county in Utah. In the past year there have been significant reductions in the price of hay as a result of increased supplies in the central and western United States. This thesis analyzes the benefits and costs of processing alfalfa into cubes and recompressed bales in order to enter the export market.

Costs of production were estimated through the use of enterprise budgets first for the farmer to establish the costs and returns for raising the hay, and secondly for cubing and recompressing the …

Measurement Of The Economic Effects Of Trade Liberalization Policy In Taiwan, Shu-Lan Huang May 1992

Measurement Of The Economic Effects Of Trade Liberalization Policy In Taiwan, Shu-Lan Huang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the conclusion of World War II, Taiwan, the Republic of China (ROC), has developed into an industrialized country following a long period of severe inflation. Taiwan has produced a successful example of economic development through export expansion. Exports and imports of Taiwan increased from approximately 10 percent of the gross national product (GNP) in the 1950s to more than 45 percent in the 1980s. The role of Taiwan's foreign exchange rates and traderelated policies on exports and imports was examined in this study.

Trade-related policies implemented by the government of ROC were documented from 1950 to 1980 by categorizing …

Identifying Differences Among Male Sex Offenders: Child Molesters Versus Exhibitionists Versus Voyeurs, David P. Defrancesco May 1992

Identifying Differences Among Male Sex Offenders: Child Molesters Versus Exhibitionists Versus Voyeurs, David P. Defrancesco

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Social histories and testing data were compiled during initial placement assessments of 147 individuals arrested and charged as child molesters, exhibitionists, and voyeurs. These data were statistically analyzed using discriminant analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Child molesters, exhibitionists, and voyeurs were found to differ with regards to history of voyeurism; Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) L scale scores; sexual arousal in response to a violent scenario involving a 12-year-old male, measured via penile plethysmography; and age. Implications of these results are discussed relative to the population sampled and future research.

Similarities Within Adolescent Friendship Pairs: The Relationship Between The Strength And Qualities Of Friendship And The Individuals' Ego Identity Development, James F. Akers May 1992

Similarities Within Adolescent Friendship Pairs: The Relationship Between The Strength And Qualities Of Friendship And The Individuals' Ego Identity Development, James F. Akers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Current theory and research have suggested that adolescent friends share many similarities which range from strong similarities in sociodemographic variables to weaker correlations for personality characteristics. The goal of this study was to advance the base of knowledge related to similarities between friends by exploring relationships between early adolescent ego identity status and friendship strength, quality, and duration. First, the objective measure of Ego Identity Status was used to test the hypothesis that early adolescents in reciprocally identified friendship pairs are more similar in their ego identity status; no such relationship was found. Second, a measure designed to assess friendship …

Development And Validation Of A Systematic Training Program For The Diagnosis Of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, And Concomitant Conditions, Lind K. Todd May 1992

Development And Validation Of A Systematic Training Program For The Diagnosis Of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, And Concomitant Conditions, Lind K. Todd

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The research concerning eating disorders and concomitant conditions shows that anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are serious disorders that pose many diagnostic and therapeutic challenges to mental health and nutrition professionals. Most psychologists and nutritionists receive broad-based training that likely only superficially touches upon the importance of these diagnostic issues. Nevertheless, effective treatment planning requires that diagnostic issues and concomitant conditions be evaluated and incorporated into the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. Thus, there is an increasing need for specialized training in order to better evaluate and treat the complicated clinical picture presented by eating disorder clients.

However to …
