20th Annual Symposium Of The School Of Science, Engineering And Health, Messiah University
School of Science, Engineering & Health (SEH) Symposium
We in the School of Science, Engineering and Health at Messiah University welcome you to our 20th Annual Symposium. Please celebrate with our students, staff and faculty as you hear about and see professional presentations that showcase our students’ basic and applied research in science and health fields. The outcomes of scientific research expand intellectual understanding and have tremendous impact on quality of life, environmental health, and human flourishing. We warmly welcome you as guests for the day.

Piloting Faculty Oer Grant Programs - A Practical Guide For Librarians, Christopher Barnes
Piloting Faculty Oer Grant Programs - A Practical Guide For Librarians, Christopher Barnes
All Musselman Library Staff Works
This community resource was created as a component of my capstone project for the 2017-2018 pilot of the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program. My goal was to determine whether my institution was ready for a faculty OER grant program pilot and design one that would be both effective and sustainable. Over the course of the project, I found myself compiling the most important questions we at Gettysburg College needed to answer to determine whether and what kind of a grant program was best for us.
Part One of this resource is therefore an organized list of the questions I found …
Using Databases (With Research Log) Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Using Databases (With Research Log) Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Open Educational Resources
This activity shows students how to match their information needs and search strategies to appropriate search tools. In this case, students are learning how to find and use academic databases in order to locate resources that are relevant to their academic research assignment.
Creating Keywords From A Research Question Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Creating Keywords From A Research Question Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Open Educational Resources
This lesson helps students recognize that they need to use different types of searching language in order to retrieve relevant results and to emphasize that research is an iterative process. Use when students have already formulated a research question and are about to begin searching for information on their topic.
Evaluation Criteria Carousel Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Evaluation Criteria Carousel Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Open Educational Resources
In this lesson, students will create evaluation criteria that they can use to determine the quality of a source.

Open Educational Resources
Use this lesson to help students distinguish between primary and secondary sources and use them in them in the appropriate context.
Website Evaluation Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Website Evaluation Lesson, Alexandra Hamlett, Meagan Lacy
Open Educational Resources
This activity helps students evaluate their own authority on a particular subject so that they can begin to understand how authority is created and effectively evaluate the authority of other sources they encounter. Additional evaluation criteria is also introduced.

Use this template to prepare a generic data management plan (DMP). This template does not correspond to any particular grant funder’s DMP requirements; however, you may find it useful if you are applying to a funding agency that requires a DMP but does not provide specific guidance on what your plan should contain.

Accounting For Differences In Depression Stigma Between Canadian Asians And Europeans, Amanda L. Shamblaw, Francois B. Botha, David J.A. Dozois
Accounting For Differences In Depression Stigma Between Canadian Asians And Europeans, Amanda L. Shamblaw, Francois B. Botha, David J.A. Dozois
Psychology Publications
Stigma is an important barrier to recovery from depression. Individuals of Asian origin show greater levels of depression stigma compared with individuals of European origin. This study examined the mediators of the relationship between ethnicity and depression stigma in a North American context. A sample of university students, including 199 Canadian Europeans and 249 Canadian Asians, completed a variety of measures through an online study. Stigma toward an individual with depression was measured using both the Depression Attribution Questionnaire-27 and a Social Distance Scale. The perception of social norms, the belief that depression brings shame to one’s family, a social …
The Structure And Evolution Of The Academic Discipline Of Law In The United States: Generation And Validation Of Course-Subject Co-Occurrence (Csco) Maps, Peter A. Hook
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
This dissertation proposes, exemplifies, and validates the usage of course-subject co-occurrence (CSCO) data to generate topic maps of an academic discipline. CSCO is defined as course-subjects taught in the same academic year by the same teacher. This work is premised on the assumption that in the aggregate and for reasons of efficiency, faculty members teach course-subjects that are topically similar to one another. To exemplify and validate CSCO, more than 112,000 CSCO events were extracted from the annual directories of the American Association of Law Schools covering nearly eighty years of law school teaching in the United States. The CSCO …
Vertical Drain Consolidation With Piecewise Linear Surcharge And Vacuum, Rohan Walker
Vertical Drain Consolidation With Piecewise Linear Surcharge And Vacuum, Rohan Walker
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Maintaining the simplicity of Hansbo's (1981) solution, this paper presents radial consolidation equations that capture some of the versatility of more complex analytical solutions. Material and geometry properties may vary piecewise-constant with time while loading/unloading, both surcharge and vacuum, may vary piecewise-linear with time. The new equations are easily implemented in a spreadsheet or computer program providing a simple yet versatile tool for analysis of consolidation problems dominated by radial drainage. Computer code for implementing the new approach in Microsoft Excel is provided

Industrial Policy And The States: How Will They Pay?, Roy W. Bahl
Industrial Policy And The States: How Will They Pay?, Roy W. Bahl
ECON Publications
The success of any national industrial policy will depend heavily on the participation of state and local governments. Yet the financial implications for states and localities are almost overlooked in the discussion about national industrial policy. In this article, I consider the ways state and local governments might be involved in industrial policy, either as autonomous actors or as partners in a coordinated national policy; and I discuss constraints and competing demands on the resources to which state and local governments would turn to support their participation in such policies. Finally, I suggest a general policy framework for state and …
