Navigating The Political Waters Of Open Access Publishing In Libraries, Carol Ann Borchert, Charlene N. Simser, Wendy C. Robertson
Wendy C Robertson
In recent years, many libraries have forayed into the world of open access (OA) publishing. While it marks a major shift in the mission of libraries to move from providing access to content to generating and creating content ourselves, it still involves the same basic values regarding access to information. The environment has changed, and libraries are adapting with new approaches and new staff skills to promote these fundamental values. The authors selected nineteen libraries and conducted phone interviews with a specific list of questions, encouraging discussion about how each library approached being a publisher. This chapter examines the politics …

Collaborating For Sustainable Scholarship: Models That Serve Librarians, Publishers, And Scholars, Carol Macadam, Kate Duff, Wendy Robertson
Wendy C Robertson
MacAdam and Duff discussed the benefits and challenges of implementing JSTOR's Current Scholarship Program (CSP). The program, which began in 2011, is designed to provide a sustainable publishing platform for university presses. JSTOR worked closely with partners to meet their unique needs and ensure that libraries retain existing access, while standardizing as much as possible. Combining subscription lists was a major issue for the titles moving to the new platform. JSTOR also needed to develop workflows and expertise to support new content. Future plans include improving design options, expanding to new presses, and integration with new JSTOR projects. Recorder, Wendy …

New Life To Old Serials: Digitizing Back Volumes, Wendy C. Robertson
Wendy C Robertson
Many serials titles still exist in print only, and major commercial digitizing efforts often overlook titles that are not widely held. If out of copyright, these titles can be digitized by libraries, giving this old scholarship new life. Many libraries do some sort of digitization of textual materials, but too often serials experts are not involved. The titles may not be presented in ways that pull the serial together while also allowing article level linking. Serials experts can be valuable contributors to these digitization projects. This presentation will provide information on how to digitize text efficiently and how serials are …

The University of Iowa Libraries has converted a few print texts to databases, working with an in-house programmer and web developer. These are resource intensive projects, so we do few of them and only for items that are institutionally important. In each case, we are re-envisioning the print text to see how it can be most effectively used online and as such are not merely hosting a previously published PDF but creating a new way to interact with the material. This presentation discusses issues and considerations that have come up in the process.

Identifying Updated Metadata And Images From A Content Provider, Wendy C. Robertson
Wendy C Robertson
Items in a digital collections are frequently not static, instead being updated in some way. When this information comes from a content provider mixed with new materials, the updates need to be separated from the new content. It also needs to be clear what content specifically was updated. Is it a new image or did a single image become compound images? Was metadata added or removed and were these changes in a field that we have also modified? This presentation will cover using Microsoft Excel and Access to find the updates so that the work can then proceed in CONTENTdm
