Recruitment Strategies For A Sustainable Pipeline Of African American College Graduates As Civil Servants, Owen Wilbert Muldrow, Jr.
Recruitment Strategies For A Sustainable Pipeline Of African American College Graduates As Civil Servants, Owen Wilbert Muldrow, Jr.
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Government leaders have not been successful in their strategies for developing a pipeline of African American college students to address the absence of African American representation in civil service management positions. Increasing African American representation among civil service personnel may produce a government workforce that reflects American society, which may promote equitable and responsive solutions in serving public interests. The purpose of this qualitative modified Delphi study was to build consensus among a nationwide expert panel of government-affiliated talent managers as to strategies for creating a sustainable civil service pipeline of annual graduating classes of African American collegians. The research …

Underrepresentation Of African American Female Community College Presidents In The United States, Nicole N. Tanner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American women are significantly underrepresented in the role of community college presidents in the United States. Insufficient research has been conducted related to the reason behind the underrepresentation of African American female community college presidents in this nation, warranting an investigation that led to this study. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of 7 current and former African American women who are, or have held, the community college presidency role to gain an in depth understanding as to why, from their perspective, an underrepresentation of African American female community college presidents exists in …

African American Christian Senior Pastor's Beliefs About Mental Health Treatment, Trinaa L. Copeland
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the African American community, the Black Church and its clergy have served as gatekeepers to formal mental health treatment. Little is known about the beliefs of African American Christian senior pastors about mental health treatment and their personal views influencing their counsel to congregants seeking support through the church. This transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African American Christian senior pastors in relation to how they understand mental health treatment and provide it to their congregants. The research questions explored three areas: (a) the senior pastors' experiences in rendering mental health treatment, (b) the senior pastors' personal …
Racial Identity, Skin Tone, And Intragroup Racism Among African American Males, Carlton Deshawn Lewis
Racial Identity, Skin Tone, And Intragroup Racism Among African American Males, Carlton Deshawn Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Skin tone of an African American is a key primer for prejudicial attitudes among Whites,
with darker skin tones eliciting more negative reactions. No previous studies have
examined this phenomenon with African Americans as the evaluators. Social identity and
social categorization theories, and Cross' theory of nigrescence, provided theoretical
frameworks for this study. It was proposed that male African American observers'
evaluations of another African American male may depend not only on the skin tone of
the target (job candidate) and the quality of his credentials, but also on the observer's
own skin tone and stage of racial identity. …
Rehabilitation For Gang-Affiliated, Male, African American Juvenile Delinquents, Batsheva Berger
Rehabilitation For Gang-Affiliated, Male, African American Juvenile Delinquents, Batsheva Berger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many social workers are unaware of their responsibilities related to African American, male, juvenile delinquents who have gang affiliation. Punishment by detention is detrimental to these youth because detention perpetuates criminal careers and does not rehabilitate juvenile offenders. The purpose of this action research study was to determine how social workers understood their role in the rehabilitation of gang-affiliated, African American, male juvenile delinquents. Differential association theory was used as the conceptual framework to understand the detriment of youth being incarcerated without rehabilitation. One focus group of 5 social workers was formed using purposive sampling of social workers who worked …
Microlevel Fragility Of The African American Lgbt Community In North Carolina After House Bill 2, William Flozell Clements
Microlevel Fragility Of The African American Lgbt Community In North Carolina After House Bill 2, William Flozell Clements
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social marginalization and isolation of target populations are growing areas of concern for policy administrators. African American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (AA LGBT) individuals are not permitted full political, economic, or moral citizenship and thus are in society but not completely of it. Legislation such as North Carolina's House Bill 2 (HB2) has the potential to dissolve the social contract connecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness at the microlevel. The emerging U.S. trend of moving societally from universal access in microlevel institutions toward more market-based strategies poses a formidable challenge for this target population. The purpose of …
Substance Use And Romantic Attachment Among African American And Black Caribbean Adult Males, Shaun Faith Hutton
Substance Use And Romantic Attachment Among African American And Black Caribbean Adult Males, Shaun Faith Hutton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals from unfavorable environments tend to carry maladaptive patterns of attachment from infancy through adulthood. Empirically, these styles have been shown to be intergenerational. Substance use disorder has been linked to maladaptive patterns of attachment among adults. However, limited data exists regarding this phenomenon with African American and Black Caribbean males. Bowlby's attachment theory and Ainsworth's patterns of attachment were the theoretical frameworks applied to this quantitative study. The purpose was to determine the effect of ethnicity and alcohol use on anxious and avoidant attachment patterns among a sample of 151 adult males. Using the Experience in Close Relationship and …
Adolescent Girls Of Color And Leadership Development, Veronda Lea Rooks-Price
Adolescent Girls Of Color And Leadership Development, Veronda Lea Rooks-Price
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adolescent girls of color (GOC) experience significant changes in social expectations during puberty based on gender and racial inequity. This divergence usually changes the trajectory for GOC relative to leadership development and may affect their career choices, life decisions, and overall directions for growth. This qualitative study explored the experiences of women of color (WOC) who hold senior leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies. Critical theory grounded this study as its aim is to identify marginalization of any kind and determine ways to free those who are oppressed. Research questions focused on the perceived challenges the participants experienced during adolescence …
