The Connection Between Pain, Perceived Disability, Emotional/Behavioral Problems, And Treatment Satisfaction, Penny Renee Drake
The Connection Between Pain, Perceived Disability, Emotional/Behavioral Problems, And Treatment Satisfaction, Penny Renee Drake
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With more than 100 million Americans living in chronic pain (CP), there is a growing need for better and more effective pain management strategies. CP can result from an injury, disease, or an emotional or psychological issue. The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental study using a multiple linear regression procedure was to determine if CP patients’ perception of their disability as measured by the Personality Assessment Screener (PAS) and their emotional and/or behavioral problems as measured by the Oswestry Disability Index predict their satisfaction with their pain management regimen as measured by the researcher-produced instrument Survey of Satisfaction with Pain …
Understanding The Role That The Internet And Social Media Plays In Suicide Survivor Bereavement, Catherine Merle Perusse
Understanding The Role That The Internet And Social Media Plays In Suicide Survivor Bereavement, Catherine Merle Perusse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Every year more than 47,000 individuals die by suicide in the United States, leaving behind numerous family and friends who become suicide survivors. While there are prodigious amounts of research on suicidal behavior, little research has focused on what the surviving family members, friends, and community members need after the loss. Many suicide survivors use social media to address their grief and pain in a very public manner. A constructionist social theory of grief and existential phenomenology provided the framework for this qualitative study to examine the use of the Internet and social media as a forum for those grieving …
African American Men’S Negative Personal Experiences With And Trust In Police, Cachet Dominique Burks
African American Men’S Negative Personal Experiences With And Trust In Police, Cachet Dominique Burks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American men’s negative experiences with the police have impacted their trust of police. Many African American men have experienced psychological trauma, more specifically posttraumatic stress disorder, due to their encounters with police. As a result of these negative personal experiences, their reporting of crimes has decreased significantly, and gun-related violence is going unreported. There is limited literature on this topic. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological analysis was to explore the negative personal experiences that some African American men have with police officers and their experiences of trust of law enforcement. Personal construct theory, which is a theory that …
Gender Mainstreaming In Male-Dominated Nigerian Industries, Benedicta Ifeyinwa Oyiana
Gender Mainstreaming In Male-Dominated Nigerian Industries, Benedicta Ifeyinwa Oyiana
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The objective of Gender mainstreaming (GM) is to foster equal opportunities by applying a gender perspective to all policies and practices within organizations, thus influencing decisions and traditional structures of organizations. GM strategies redirect focus from increasing participation and representation to ensuring structure in organizational practices that address inequalities. The strain between women’s work experience and traditional role expectations contributes to the issues career women experience, especially those in male-dominated industries. Interviews with ten senior executives were conducted over Zoom, data were analyzed using a five-phased approach: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. This study buttresses how in spite of …
Parents' Perceptions Of And Reactions To Their Child's Intergroup Marriage, Theresa Aikens
Parents' Perceptions Of And Reactions To Their Child's Intergroup Marriage, Theresa Aikens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have found that parental support and acceptance are integral to the success of interracial romantic relationships (IRRs) and well-being of interracial romantic relationship participants (IRRPs). Research on couples involved in IRRs is prevalent, but researchers neglected to include the perspectives of the parents of the IRRPs. The lived experiences of parents of adult children involved in Black-White IRRs and their perceptions of societal reactions to the IRR were explored to better understand the mechanisms behind parental support or disapproval of IRRs. Bronfenbrenner's PPCT model of bioecological theory allowed for a focus on a parent's development within the parent-child relationship …
Trauma Barriers To Substance Abuse Treatment Engagement Among Formerly Incarcerated Males, Eleonora Vlasta Juliana
Trauma Barriers To Substance Abuse Treatment Engagement Among Formerly Incarcerated Males, Eleonora Vlasta Juliana
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study explored treatment engagement among formerly incarcerated adult males in a community-based substance abuse treatment program who experienced barriers related to sexual and violent trauma histories. Fully engaging in treatment requires a readiness to become and remain sober, and for those who suffer from trauma, such readiness may be absent, and continued substance use may be their way to cope with pain. This study explored a gap in the literature concerning how sexual and violent trauma might play a role as barriers to engaging in substance abuse treatment among formerly incarcerated males. Understanding how such traumas impact treatment engagement …
The Obligation Of Law Enforcement Agencies To The Mental Health Of Their Officers, Michael Ballard
The Obligation Of Law Enforcement Agencies To The Mental Health Of Their Officers, Michael Ballard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The extent of law enforcement agencies’ responsibility to address their officers’ mental health needs is unclear, despite the availability of resources and suggested guidelines. This research applied the theory of planned behavior to police officers’ willingness to seek mental health assistance from their agencies, examining the responses of 104 law enforcement officers in Utah and Idaho from four agencies. The results of this quantitative study provide evidence that law enforcement agencies have a responsibility to the mental health of their officers. Officers in general recognized the value of mental health services for others; however, they were not likely to seek …
Changes In Patient Knowledge And Adherence To Glaucoma Treatment After Educational Intervention, Stella Stempel
Changes In Patient Knowledge And Adherence To Glaucoma Treatment After Educational Intervention, Stella Stempel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma and the second-leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. Although timely diagnosis and proper adherence to therapeutic regimen prevent blindness, patient nonadherence continues to be the greatest challenge to effective treatment. Preliminary research suggested that culturally interactive education delivery may increase patient adherence. However, this education intervention had not occurred with glaucoma treatment. The transtheoretical model of behavior change served as the framework for this study. The research questions addressed the effect that glaucoma education provided by a culturally competent patient navigator had on patient knowledge of glaucoma, adherence to medication …

Faculty Experiences Of Social Media Implementation In Online Classrooms, Ashley Lynn George
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social media has become an integral part of the education process, with educators incorporating social media platforms both actively and passively within the learning environment. Yet, the implementation and usefulness of social media in the online learning environment as an educational assistance tool have not been adequately investigated. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how the incorporation of social media into the online learning environment is experienced by university faculty and if their experiences of use or required changes in pedagogy for implementation are affecting their ability or desire to implement the new technology. Individual virtual interviews …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Suicide among women in the United States increased significantly over the last decade, now accounting for six suicides per 100,000 population. Concurrently, there has been an increase in social media use, with women exhibiting elevated presence on social networking platforms. Grounded in the theoretical framework of the theory of suicide and the interpersonal theory of suicide, the purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study was to evaluate the association between social media use, feelings of belongingness, and suicidal ideation to address the increased suicide rate among adult women in the United States. One research question focused on how social media use …
Effective Police Recruitment: Professional Misconduct Risk Regression Analysis For Law Enforcement Officers, Clinton Jenkins
Effective Police Recruitment: Professional Misconduct Risk Regression Analysis For Law Enforcement Officers, Clinton Jenkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police departments are responsible for evaluating applicants to find suitable recruits to join a department’s training program. It was not known how police officer recruits feel about the recruitment and selection process. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine to what extent the 2 M-PULSE scale scores (sexually offensive conduct and racially offensive behavior) account for variance in the MMPI-2RF (anger proneness and behavior/externalizing dysfunctional) subscales scores. Archival data was provided by a private business that conducts these screenings for multiple law enforcement organizations (local and state). Law enforcement candidates (N = 107) were evaluated by a private …

African Immigrants' U.S. Experience Of Mental Health, Mental Illness, And Help-Seeking, Bartholomew Edem-Enang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine and explore African immigrants’ U.S. experience of mental health, mental illness, and help-seeking. Mental health, mental illness, and help-seeking are misunderstood public health issues. Indigenous cultural stigma concerning mental illness and help-seeking and mistrust of Western medicine inhibit African immigrants from reporting mental illness and seeking treatment. The segmented assimilation theory (SAT) and cultural risk theory (CRT) and interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) were used to guide data collection and analysis. Data were collected from a sample of 9 African immigrants who migrated from countries within the Five Main Regions of Africa …
Mapping The Lived Experiences Of Bisexuals, Barbara Ann Hopkins
Mapping The Lived Experiences Of Bisexuals, Barbara Ann Hopkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Bisexuality is often met with binegativity, dismissal, and marginalization due to misconception of identity and behavior and its consideration as a transitional phase before the adoption of a monosexual identity. There is a lack of in-depth research regarding bisexuality apart from lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender/sexual studies; it is important to understand and differentiate bisexuality as a separate identity rather than a subset of heterosexual or homosexual identities. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of bisexuals through the lens of sexual configurations theory (SCT). SCT is a relatively new theory that has yet …
Perceived Selectivity As A Moderator Of Cohesion And Resilience In Usaf Eod Operators, Christopher Lee Townsend
Perceived Selectivity As A Moderator Of Cohesion And Resilience In Usaf Eod Operators, Christopher Lee Townsend
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Stress in the workplace, especially for the military, has been a problem for decades. Between workplace stress, prolonged wars, and now a global pandemic, a need has arisen to find ways to ensure that increased stress does not lead to a decrease in mental health that could affect national security. The purpose of the study was to examine perceived selectivity as a moderator of cohesion and resilience in United States Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (USAF EOD) operators. Using a quantitative correlational research design, 311 participants were found using social media to respond to an online survey. The research questions …
Understanding The Influence Of Social Integration On The Formerly Homeless, Donna L. Wickes
Understanding The Influence Of Social Integration On The Formerly Homeless, Donna L. Wickes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As the number of homeless people in the United States continues to grow, it is apparent that the current strategies are not meeting expectations and need to be reevaluated. Studies by industry experts highlighted the need to address the impact of social integration on long-term housing sustainability. The purpose of the qualitative study was to understand from the perspective of housed, formerly, homeless individuals, how socially focused interventions could influence their sense of community and increase their social integration. Durkheim’s social theory and McMillan and Chavis’ psychological sense of community (PSOC) framework were used to guide the qualitative, phenomenological approach …
Behavioral Strategies And Predicting Impulsive Aggression In Among Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Raul Alafa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have explored the relationship between the application of written attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) impulsive aggression (IA) behavioral intervention strategies with current public-school educational plans in reducing aggression and how exclusion of behavioral strategies may increase aggression and impact students’ long-term ability to control emotions. However, the social learning theory of aggression suggests that positive self-efficacy and modeling may improve effective coping. This study explored the relationship between aggression as measured by the modified overt aggression scale and the individualized education program (IEP)/504 Plan behavioral strategies’ effectiveness for ADHD aggression as measured by a repeated measured analysis of variance. Data …
Parental Stress Coping And Middle-School Students’ Grades And Behavioral Conduct, Stephanie Buckner
Parental Stress Coping And Middle-School Students’ Grades And Behavioral Conduct, Stephanie Buckner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAccording to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, factors such as parental stress influence family functioning and affect children’s adaptive development. This quantitative study was conducted to better understand the association of parental stress coping skills with two dependent measures: the grades and behavioral conduct of middle-school students. Sixty-six parent/guardians completed the Coping Skills Assessment 2nd Revision (COSA R2), an assessment of parental stress coping skills and a brief questionnaire to collect data on their middle-school-aged children’s grades and conduct, along with demographic variables of race/ethnicity, age, family income level, number of children in the household, and partner status. No significant difference …
Effects Of Mass Shootings On Life Satisfaction Of First Responders, Hanna M. Garza
Effects Of Mass Shootings On Life Satisfaction Of First Responders, Hanna M. Garza
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mass shootings are devastating events that occur in many communities in the United States. Mass shootings bring significant psychological distress and contribute to the development of trauma. The communities affected by mass shootings rely on an effective and efficient response from first responders who assist survivors by providing psychological and physical assistance. Because first responders are the first to deal with the aftermath of mass shootings, they assume immediate secondary trauma. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether a statistically significant relationship existed between the independent variables of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and the three …
Understanding The Predictive Value Of Personality Traits And Executive Functioning In Emotional Intelligence, Isa C. Wright
Understanding The Predictive Value Of Personality Traits And Executive Functioning In Emotional Intelligence, Isa C. Wright
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) identifies numerous areas within life that are impacted by the development of higher EI, including school performance, work performance, parenting, relationship patterns, and more. The implications of EI appear to be far-reaching, yet the understanding of how EI develops in an individual continues to be vague and unclear. The purpose of this quantitative study was to account for the roles that personality factors and executive functions play in EI. By incorporating personality trait theory and executive function theory, a survey was designed and disseminated online resulting in 89 completed surveys of participants between the …
Child Abuse Reporting By Mandated Reporters In Schools, Kliche Adebanjo
Child Abuse Reporting By Mandated Reporters In Schools, Kliche Adebanjo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child maltreatment has proven to be a mainstream issue in the United States, with millions of children being referred to state welfare systems for investigation or alternative response intervention. Research has identified mandated reporters as being responsible for reporting the majority of these cases. Amongst those identified as mandated reporters, education personnel refer the greatest number of children for suspicion of child abuse or neglect, partly because of their ongoing contact daily; however, many of the cases they report are unsubstantiated. Past research findings have concluded that mandated reporters in schools lacked proper child abuse training. The purpose of this …
The Relationship Between Attachment Styles And Depression Among Lebanese Young Adults, Noor Alassadi
The Relationship Between Attachment Styles And Depression Among Lebanese Young Adults, Noor Alassadi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a serious mental disorder that impacts the individual and community. It has social, economic, emotional, and physical outcomes. Many psychological studies found that testing and identifying the relationship between attachment styles and depression could help understand the development of depression. Existing literature also indicated that cultural norms could influence the relationship between attachment styles and major depression. The purpose of this quantitative survey study, grounded in bioecological theory, was to test the relationship between attachment styles and major depressive disorder among 69 young adults in a homogeneous Lebanese culture. Data were collected using the Revised Adult Attachment Scale, …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Placement disruptions for youths placed in foster care have been the focus of multiple studies due to the negative and long-lasting impacts on these vulnerable youths. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of placement disruptions from the foster parent’s perspective to gain further understanding of potential causes of placement disruptions and what may be helpful to prevent them. The study was based on the lens of attachment theory. Data were collected from interviews with six participants recruited on social media who were licensed in the State of Washington for at least 1 year …
The Experience Of Conflicting Identities Amongst African American Law Enforcement Officers, Jeremy R. Jones
The Experience Of Conflicting Identities Amongst African American Law Enforcement Officers, Jeremy R. Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement’s unjust treatment of African Americans is a worldwide concern but impacts the African American community in different ways, particularly African American law enforcement officers who are placed in conflicting positions. They aspire to see change and more conforming police treatment, compared to other racial populations, but work for the same organization that exhibits the biased treatment they desire to have abolished. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore African American law enforcement officers’ experiences of conflicting identities. The theoretical foundation was based on Turner’s theory of self-categorization (SCT). The key research questions addressed African American …

Identifying Factors Associated With Rapid Readmissions In Behavioral Health Organizations, Glennisha Maxwell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Healthcare reform and changes to traditional reimbursement models have placed increasing pressure on healthcare industry leaders to identify ways of remaining competitive while responding to the challenge of reducing excessive costs. Behavioral health organizations are included in this systemic challenge, and rapid readmissions have been identified as one significant contributor to increasing and unsustainable costs. A qualitative case-study design was used to identify factors associated with rapid readmissions in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The research problem centered on insufficient information about the rapid readmission population of the inpatient psychiatric hospital involved in the study. Methodological triangulation of data was achieved …
Conflict In Human Relationships And Seeking Out Pets As A Safe Haven, Jennifer Rachael Bakal
Conflict In Human Relationships And Seeking Out Pets As A Safe Haven, Jennifer Rachael Bakal
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has revealed the positive physical and the psychological aspects of pet ownership, suggesting that an individual’s attachment style can impact the kind of relationship they have with their pet. Two theories guided this qualitative study; the first was Bowlby’s attachment theory, which suggests that if a child feels that the attachment figure is attentive and accessible, the child will feel loved and secure. Another theory was Ainsworth’s attachment theory in which attachment figures are described as possessing four features: proximity maintenance, separation distress, secure base, and safe haven. This study consisted of 212 participants at least 18 years old …
Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Catholic Priests, Richard Ehusani
Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Catholic Priests, Richard Ehusani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research suggests that the clergy could be at the risk of developing secondary traumatic stress (STS) because of their secondary exposure to trauma within pastoral work; however, there has been no explicit discussion of STS related to Catholic priests who may be more at the risk of developing STS than their counterparts in other churches. The requirement of priestly celibacy often leaves Catholic priests with little to no immediate social and emotional support network of family. Because of their sacred vow to keep the confessional seal unbroken in whatever circumstance, Catholic priests also may not share confessional information, even when …
Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games And Their Effects On Life Satisfaction And Social Skills, Heidi Mccreary
Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games And Their Effects On Life Satisfaction And Social Skills, Heidi Mccreary
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adult massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs) gaming is a popular trend that is often perceived negatively, including having a lack of social adaptation skills and low life satisfaction. This quantitative study explored whether life satisfaction and social skills were influenced by gaming by comparing MMORPG gamers (casual and avid) and nongamers. This quantitative survey study was built upon the limitations listed in previous research. The hypothesis was that there would be no difference between MMORPG gamers and nongamers regarding life satisfaction and social skills. To conceptualize the influence MMORPG may have, this study used Diener’s conceptualization of the pursuit …
