Diversifying And Transforming A Public University’S Children’S Book Collection: Librarian And Teacher Education Faculty Collaboration On Grants, Research, And Collection Development, Alison Lehner-Quam

An education librarian and faculty member collaborated on research grants to study teacher education student’s experiences with diverse books and to develop library collections. This study explores the development of internally grant-funded linguistically and culturally sustaining children’s book collections and assesses the impact of the grants with a model that analyzes research guide use, library instruction sessions, and reflection on grant-funded research, among other components. Intentional collection practices, including grant-funded collection development; faculty partnership; nontraditional bibliographic tools; and alternative forms of access, discovery, and shelving led to a vital and linguistically and culturally sustaining collection which reflects education student’s diverse …

What happens when you let a librarian blend their personal interest in graphic novels and manga with collection development and outreach, even if it falls outside of their primary work areas? This session will cover the basics of building and managing graphic novel and manga collections in academic libraries, the development of our library’s graphic novel and manga collection, as well as some of the ways in which our library has worked to increase student engagement using graphic novels and manga as a draw.

In the summer of 2016 two Hunter College librarians, working with a colleague in the Republic of Armenia, conducted an IRB-approved focus group at the American University of Armenia in Yerevan, Armenia. This group drew participants from the libraries and other academic departments of the American University of Armenia as well as Yerevan State University, a large public institution. The discussion attempted to ascertain whether these libraries have devised effective strategies to acquire materials and build collections in the face of the challenges they face (budgetary, linguistic, and sometimes political) and whether faculty at these institutions feel their library’s collection …

This paper explores the issues and criteria involved in developing a creditable documentary film collection about the Romani people for an academic library. Throughout their history, the Roma, or Gypsies, have dealt with biased, romanticized versions of their story, perpetuated by stereotypes found in legend, literature, song, and film. The expectation in the present undertaking is that the evidence coming from documentary films provides an effective antidote for misrepresentations. The paper reviews pertinent literature, suggests a selection process, and furnishes commentaries on individual titles as they relate to a framework based on the Romani historical and geographical narrative. This piece outlines a few brief arguments against the inclusion of ebooks with DRM restrictions in libraries. These arguments center upon what the presence of these ebooks signifies to patrons about libraries today, and how librarians should avoid holding books with DRM within their collections. Ebooks with DRM require that users give up personal data in order to read. In addition, restricted ebooks are frustrating to users and makes them dislike the libraries that offer them. Finally, DRM surveillance is at odds with librarians’ professional commitments to protecting patron privacy.

For decades, popular culture was neglected and frowned upon by academics. In recent years, cultural critics, including librarians, have found popular culture materials to be didactic tools, and vital to the study of society and the zeitgeist that has prevailed at the time of their production. As a result, many academic librarians have found it useful to develop collections in their libraries that reflect a range of sociological change as demonstrated in these resources.
