As a part of doctoral research, a study was made to identify the importance and support of having theses and dissertations in electronic form, through a survey of Indian academics and Librarians. Based on the study and special requirements of India, a model is suggested, which can be used by universities. File formats, software, workflow, infrastructure, and required support are discussed. A prototype ETD System using D-Space software is described. Integration of metadata, support for OAI-PMH protocol and CNRI handles to share content, compatibility with multilingual standards such as UNICODE were reasons for choosing D-Space as the software for the …

In 1994, the US Department of Transportation set the goal of doubling the number of bicycle trips undertaken in this country. Impediments to this goal are trip and destination barriers. One major public destination intended for universal access is the public library. This is relevant to young adults, the poor, and recent immigrants, all of whom may choose bicycle transportation at higher rates than the general population. A survey of 225 public libraries in Pennsylvania found that 54% of respondent libraries had poor overall bicycle accessibility. Self instruction is an instructional technique that is gaining popularity among teachers. Using this technique, students use instructional materials prepared by their teachers. Three approaches – cooperation, competition, and individual approaches were tested on randomly-assigned groups of students. A one-way Anova showed a significant differential effect for this instructional technique on academic achievement in library skills.

The emerging multidisciplinary field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has the potential to address several theoretical, political, and praxis issues within academic librarianship. Librarians are uniquely situated to contribute to the ongoing development of CSCL, and the library is an ideal “place” for the development, implementation, and evaluation of collaborative learning strategies and systems. The author presents three pressing, interrelated challenges within library and information science (LIS) and discusses how CSCL analyzes the social production of knowledge, emphasizing the distinction between cooperative and collaborative learning. This paper hopes to contribute to inter-disciplinary literature by mapping out the ability of one community library's used bookshop volunteers to resolve a potential conflict, that of working in a Used Bookshop Program that both gives away books to institutional recipients deemed as eligible, with its overarching purpose: to maximize profitability on behalf of the library, for serving its programming to the urban City of Stamford, located in Stamford, Connecticut. Presents the findings of a focus group study to determine how faculty use library resources and what role they see the library playing on campus. Results indicated that faculty use was mixed. This study reports on the innovative “study and work” programme for students at the Federal University of Technology, Yola. In particular, the use of student part-time workers in the Library is discussed. The study reviews the widespread and severe poverty in Nigeria and among students in particular.This study reveals that the “study and work scheme” to alleviate poverty is beneficial to both students and university departments. The scheme extolls the dignity of labour in addition to alleviating the suffering of indigent students. Library and Information Science (LIS) does not lend itself to philosophizing. Political philosophy offers a useful and necessary approach to thinking about libraries. Teleological thinking helps bring into relief some of the problems and issues of library and information science. When we do not address political problems teleologically, we may confuse means and ends, and ignore ends altogether. As an example of a teleological investigation, the author considers a proposition that some take to be the end of the library, the proposition that libraries should provide free access to all information to all persons all of the time. The nature and organization of digital information are examined from a philosophical point of view. A Platonic model is first suggested, based on both the Platonic allegory of the two worlds and the hypothesis of the informationised universe. Ancient classification schemata are presented in terms of the relationship types involved, concluding with an attempt to view the semantically rich web management system as an extended Platonic model.

Reference courses are provided in LIS schools in Iran. Different instructional methods are applied and various approaches are adopted. Some of them focus on introducing reference sources. In this method, students learn that a given reference source can satisfy a user's information needs. Others pay attention to the production of reference tools by using print media. The phrase "information society" is used across many disciplines, yet consensus on its meaning and significance is lacking. This paper explores possible meanings, with particular emphasis on economic and cultural factors. Frank Webster and Manuel Castells inform the discussion through their theoretical and empirical research on the topic. The European engagement development of information societies is analyzed with particular emphasis on Finland. Following this economic and cultural exploration of the information society, methodological implications are identified for research into information societies and consideration for information professionals.

A study examined the impact of self-efficacy and prior computer experience on the creativity of the freshly-recruited librarians in selected southwest Nigeria universities’ libraries. Fifty-two new librarians who were selected through total enumeration sampling technique represent the population of the study. Both the independent and the dependent variables were measured with relevant standardized instruments. Three research questions were developed and answered in the study. The results showed that both self-efficacy and computer experience influenced creativity

A mathematical interpretation of the theory of tertiary sources on the Web was developed, using figure-oriented and formula-based approaches.The most ideal form of the triangle of information resources is equilateral, with the sides representing primary, secondary, and tertiary sources of information on the Web.

The employment status and expectations for academic librarians in Nigeria has changed recently. Librarians now have an academic status that includes a publication requirement. This paper examines the publication requirement for academic librarians in Delta State University Library, Abraka, Nigeria. Most librarians were found to lack publications because of other workload, lack of research resources, and inadequate knowledge of scholarly journals.

To teach information literacy, many colleges and universities use a version of TILT (the Texas Information Tutorial) or Searchpath, a modification of TILT by Western Michigan University. This paper describes our experience customizing Searchpath for Kutztown University’s Rohrbach Library, including the impetus behind the project, the process of customizing Searchpath, the project pilot, collaborative efforts, and challenges encountered. The authors also discuss the decision to select Searchpath rather than TILT, how Kutztown’s version of tutorial is currently being used, and future plans for the product, along with suggestions to those considering Searchpath for their libraries.

The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking a revision of its code of ethics. The author propo ses and discusses three reasons not to revise the code. The reasons are that there is already a set of interlocking policies on ethics and related issues; that ALA leadership has taken the most conservative possible approach to ethics policy - and especially the connection between librarians' professional responsibilities and rights; and that when policies are amended, they are not always improved, and those on the books are often ignored. The author considers and discusses likely objections to his proposal.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria is one of Nigeria's first generation universities, opening its doors in 1962. University library computerization in Nigeria has been in the pipeline since the 1970s, although concerted efforts began in the late 1990s. ALICE, an integrated library system which is popular in the UK, was acquired and implemented then. Challenges to library automation include poor infrastructure, a low level of computer literacy among the staff, and a lack of resources for maintaining and updating hardware and software.

Internet Use By Researchers: A Study Of Panjab University, Chandigarh, Preeti Mahajan

A survey was used to gather information about use of the Internet by researchers at Panjab University, Chandigarh in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. The results indicate that researchers in the sciences are the most positive about the impact of the Internet, while 70% of the social science and 20% of the humanities felt positive about the Internet and its impact. Other survey results contrast the use of electronic journals, access to computers, and other topics.
