Identification Of Eight Different Isoforms Of The Glucocorticoid Receptor In Guinea Pig Placenta: Relationship To Preterm Delivery, Sex And Betamethasone Exposure, Zarqa Saif, Rebecca M. Dyson, Hannah K. Palliser, Ian M. R Wright, Nick Lu, Vicki L. Clifton Jan 2016

Identification Of Eight Different Isoforms Of The Glucocorticoid Receptor In Guinea Pig Placenta: Relationship To Preterm Delivery, Sex And Betamethasone Exposure, Zarqa Saif, Rebecca M. Dyson, Hannah K. Palliser, Ian M. R Wright, Nick Lu, Vicki L. Clifton

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The placental glucocorticoid receptor (GR) is central to glucocorticoid signalling and for mediating steroid effects on pathways associated with fetal growth and lung maturation but the GR has not been examined in the guinea pig placenta even though this animal is regularly used as a model of preterm birth and excess glucocorticoid exposure. Guinea pig dams received subcutaneous injections of either vehicle or betamethasone at 24 and 12 hours prior to preterm or term caesarean-section delivery. At delivery pup and organ weights were recorded. Placentae were dissected, weighed and analysed using Western blot to examine GR isoform expression in nuclear …

Ex situ conservation strategies for threatened species often require long-term commitment and financial investment to achieve management objectives. We present a framework that considers the decision to adopt ex situ management for a target species as the end point of several linked decisions. We used a decision tree to intuitively represent the logical sequence of decision making. The first decision is to identify the specific management actions most likely to achieve the fundamental objectives of the recovery plan, with or without the use of ex-situ populations. Once this decision has been made, one decides whether to establish an ex situ …

Why Was Silcrete Heat-Treated In The Middle Stone Age? An Early Transformative Technology In The Context Of Raw Material Use At Mertenhof Rock Shelter, South Africa, Patrick Schmidt, Alex Mackay

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

People heat treated silcrete during the Middle Stone Age (MSA) in southern Africa but the spatial and temporal variability of this practice remains poorly documented. This paucity of data in turn makes it difficult to interrogate the motive factors underlying the application of this technique. In this paper we present data on heat treatment of silcrete through the Howiesons Poort and post-Howiesons Poort of the rock shelter site Mertenhof, located in the Western Cape of South Africa. In contrast to other sites where heat treatment has been documented, distance to rock source at Mertenhof can be reasonably well estimated, and …

The Mesoproterozoic To Early Neoproterozoic Passive Margin Lajeado Group And Apiaí Gabbro, Southeastern Brazil, G A. C Campanha, Miguel Angelo Stipp Basei, F M. Faleiros, Allen Phillip Nutman

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The Lajeado Group in the Ribeira Belt, Southeastern Brazil, corresponds to an open-sea carbonate platform, comprised of seven overlapping siliciclastic and carbonatic formations, intruded in its upper portion by the Apiaí Gabbro. These rocks have a Neoproterozoic tectonometamorphic overprint related to arc magmatism and the Brasiliano collisional orogeny. Geochronological constraints are given by new U-Pb SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS data for Lajeado Group detrital zircons and for magmatic zircons from the Apiaí Gabbro. The youngest detrital zircons in the Lajeado Group are 1400-1200 Ma, and constrain its maximum age of deposition to beMa, whereas the 877 ± 8 Ma age for …

2016 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. All rights reserved. During the Pleistocene, Australia and New Guinea supported a rich assemblage of large vertebrates. Why these animals disappeared has been debated for more than a century and remains controversial. Previous synthetic reviews of this problem have typically focused heavily on particular types of evidence, such as the dating of extinction and human arrival, and have frequently ignored uncertainties and biases that can lead to misinterpretation of this evidence. Here, we review diverse evidence bearing on this issue and conclude that, although many knowledge gaps remain, multiple independent lines of …

Building Bridges In Dietary Counselling: An Exploratory Study Examining The Usefulness Of Wellness And Wellbeing Concepts, Anne Mcmahon, P C. Tay, Linda C. Tapsell, Peter G. Williams

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background Over the last decade, professional discourse around health ownership has been evolving to recognise an individually-driven wellness/wellbeing approach. Concurrently, dietetic competencies have changed to include client-centred counselling incorporating individual client's perspectives within dietary prescriptions. The present exploratory research aimed to explore how client-centred counselling practice was being represented in the dietetic literature and to examine dietitians' perspectives about working with clients in the current environment. Methods To explore the professional position, a literature search was conducted using keywords encompassing client-centred care and competency within professional dietetic journals (2001-2010). To develop a contextual case study, 10 in-depth interviews with dietitians …

Baseline Characteristics Associated With Different Bmi Trajectories In Weight Loss Trials: A Case For Better Targeting Of Interventions, Marijka Batterham, Linda C. Tapsell, Karen E. Charlton

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background/Objectives: Dietary weight loss interventions have heterogeneous outcomes in long-term studies, with many participants regaining part or all of the lost weight. Growth mixture modelling is a novel analytic approach that can be used to identify different trajectories of weight change during a trial rather than focussing on the total amount of weight lost. Subjects/Methods: Data were pooled from two 12-month dietary weight loss studies where no significant difference was detected between the treatment and control arms, thus allowing analysis independent of treatment. The data set included 231 subjects (74.5% female), with a mean weight loss of 6.40 kg (4.96). …

Synthesis Of Bridged Heterocycles Via Sequential 1,4- And 1,2-Addition Reactions To Α,Β-Unsaturated N-Acyliminium Ions: Mechanistic And Computational Studies, Arife Yazici, Uta Wille, Stephen G. Pyne

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Novel tricyclic bridged heterocyclic systems can be readily prepared from sequential 1,4- and 1,2-addition reactions of allyl and 3-substituted allylsilanes to indolizidine and quinolizidine α,β-unsaturated N-acyliminium ions. These reactions involve a novel N-assisted, transannular 1,5-hydride shift. Such a mechanism was supported by examining the reaction of a dideuterated indolizidine, α,β-unsaturated N-acyliminium ion precursor, which provided specifically dideuterated tricyclic bridged heterocyclic products, and from computational studies. In contrast, the corresponding pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepine system did not provide the corresponding tricyclic bridged heterocyclic product and gave only a bis-allyl adduct, while more substituted versions gave novel furo[3,2-d]pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepine products. Such heterocyclic systems would be expected …

Factors Influencing Food Choice For Independently Living Older People - A Systematic Literature Review, Alison Host, Anne T. Mcmahon, Karen L. Walton, Karen E. Charlton

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Unyielding, disproportionate growth in the 65 years and older age group has precipitated serious concern about the propensity of health and aged-care services to cope in the very near future. Preservation of health and independence for as long as possible into later life will be necessary to attenuate demand for such services. Maintenance of nutritional status is acknowledged as fundamental for achievement of this aim. Determinants of food choice within this age group need to be identified and better understood to facilitate the development of pertinent strategies for encouraging nutritional intakes supportive of optimal health. A systematic review of the …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The thermal And near infrared sensor for carbon observations Fourier transform spectrometer (TANSO-FTS) on board the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) applies the normal nadir mode above the land ("land data") and sun glint mode over the ocean ("ocean data") to provide global distributions of column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 and CH4, or XCO2 and XCH4. Several algorithms have been developed to obtain highly accurate greenhouse gas concentrations from TANSO-FTS/GOSAT spectra. So far, all the retrieval algorithms have been validated with the measurements from ground-based Fourier transform spectrometers from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), but limited to …

Bayesian Methods For Comparing Species Physiological And Ecological Response Curves, Michael B. Ashcroft, Angelica Casanova-Katny, Kerrie Mengersen, Todd N. Rosenstiel, Johanna Turnbull, Jane Wasley, Melinda J. Waterman, Gustavo E. Zuniga, Sharon A. Robinson Jan 2016

Bayesian Methods For Comparing Species Physiological And Ecological Response Curves, Michael B. Ashcroft, Angelica Casanova-Katny, Kerrie Mengersen, Todd N. Rosenstiel, Johanna Turnbull, Jane Wasley, Melinda J. Waterman, Gustavo E. Zuniga, Sharon A. Robinson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Many ecological questions require information on species' optimal conditions or critical limits along environmental gradients. These attributes can be compared to answer questions on niche partitioning, species coexistence and niche conservatism. However, these comparisons are unconvincing when existing methods do not quantify the uncertainty in the attributes or rely on assumptions about the shape of species' responses to the environmental gradient. The aim of this study was to develop a model to quantify the uncertainty in the attributes of species response curves and allow them to be tested for substantive differences without making assumptions about the shape of the responses. …

Tightening The Net: In Search Of Alternatives To Destructive Fishing And Meshing Programs, Andrew R. Davis, Allison Broad

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Industrialised fishing has changed the ocean irrevocably. As technology improved, so the quantity and range of sea life extracted from the ocean increased.[1] The discourse of extraction, which we usually associate with the mining industry, is appropriate here because the fishing industry has for centuries pretended to itself and the world at large that fish are a renewable resource even though their actual practices constantly pushed fish populations in a non-renewable direction. Fishery statistics chronicle precipitous declines in fish resources across every ocean basin 2 as humans have become increasingly efficient at exploitation

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Aim To present for wider debate a conceptual model for clinical leadership development in pre-registration nursing programmes and a proposed implementation plan. Background Globally, leadership in nursing has become a significant issue. Whilst there is continued support for leadership preparation in pre-registration nursing programmes, there have been very few published accounts of curriculum content and/or pedagogical approaches that foster clinical leadership development in pre-registration nursing. A doctoral research study has resulted in the creation of an overarching model for clinical leadership. Design A multi-method research study using theoretical and empirical literature 1974-2015, a focus group, expert opinion and a national …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Elevated biological concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative neurotoxin, are observed throughout the Arctic Ocean, but major sources and degradation pathways in seawater are not well understood. We develop a mass budget for mercury species in the Arctic Ocean based on available data since 2004 and discuss implications and uncertainties. Our calculations show that high total mercury (Hg) in Arctic seawater relative to other basins reflect large freshwater inputs and sea ice cover that inhibits losses through evasion. We find that most net MeHg production (20 Mg a−1) occurs in the subsurface ocean (20-200 m). There it is converted to …

Clinical Leadership As An Integral Curriculum Thread In Pre-Registration Nursing Programmes, Angela M. Brown, Jan Dewing, Patrick A. Crookes

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background In recent years there has been a growth in leadership development frameworks in health for the existing workforce. There has also been a related abundance of leadership programmes developed specifically for qualified nurses. There is a groundswell of opinion that clinical leadership preparation needs to extend to preparatory programmes leading to registration as a nurse. To this end a doctoral research study has been completed that focused specifically on the identification and verification of the antecedents of clinical leadership (leadership and management) so they can shape the curriculum content and the best way to deliver the curriculum content as …

What Are The 'Necessary' Skills For A Newly Graduating Rn? Results Of An Australian Survey, Roy A. Brown, Patrick A. Crookes

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background There appears to be a sense of disappointment with the product of contemporary nursing programs in Australia in that new graduate RNs are often referred to as not possessing appropriate skills by clinical colleagues. This work identifies the skills that the profession believes that newly graduating RN's should possess at the point of registration. Methods A qualitative consensus methodology was used in the form of a modified Delphi survey. Expert panels were used to review and validate data. Results Consensus was reached on the top 25 skills areas that can be reasonably expected of a new graduate Registered Nurse …

Moss Δ13c: Implications For Subantarctic Palaeohydrological Reconstructions, Jessica Bramley-Alves, Wolfgang Wanek, Sharon A. Robinson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Southern Ocean Islands, despite their equitable oceanic climates, have recently experienced a number of pronounced climate variations. Shifts in water availability in this region are of concern; however, methods of measuring water availability are currently inadequate. Recent advances using stable carbon isotopes (δ13C) in Antarctic mosses to record long-term variations in water availability suggest that this technique might be applicable in other locations where conditions are cold enough to produce meaningful moss growth for reconstructions. Verification of this technique at each new location is essential, however, due to disparity between species and climates. Here, variations in δ13CBULK with growth water …

Understanding the atmospheric distribution of water (H 2 O) is crucial for global warming studies and climate change mitigation. In this context, reliable satellite data are extremely valuable for their global and continuous coverage, once their quality has been assessed. Short-wavelength infrared spectra are acquired by the Thermal And Near-infrared Sensor for carbon Observation-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (TANSO-FTS) aboard the Greenhouse gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT). From these, column-averaged dry-air mole fractions of carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor (XH 2 O) have been retrieved at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan) and are available as a Level 2 research …

Dietary Carotenoids Change The Colour Of Southern Corroboree Frogs, Kate Umbers, Aimee J. Silla, Joseph A. Bailey, Allison K. Shaw, Phillip G. Byrne

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Animal coloration can be the result of many interconnected elements, including the production of colour-producing molecules de novo, as well as the acquisition of pigments from the diet. When acquired through the diet, carotenoids (a common class of pigments) can influence yellow, orange, and red coloration and enhanced levels of carotenoids can result in brighter coloration and/or changes in hue or saturation. We tested the hypothesis that dietary carotenoid supplementation changes the striking black and yellow coloration of the southern corroboree frog (Pseudophryne corroboree, Amphibia: Anura). Our dietary treatment showed no measurable difference in colour or brightness for black patches …
