Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes in detail a successful training program developed for sessional (part-time or nonpermanent) laboratory demonstrators employed in the Electrical Engineering Department of an Australian university. Such demonstrators play an important role in teaching practical concepts and skills in engineering. The success of the program relies on a centralized approach coordinated by a carefully selected Laboratory Manager responsible for the recruitment, allocation, training, and development of sessional teachers, and for assessing student satisfaction with them. The paper examines the overall impact of the program on these teachers': 1) introducing laboratory material; 2) preparation; 3) communication; 4) interest in student …

A micro hydromechanical deep drawing is carried out using the pure titanium and the effect of fluid pressure on formability of pure titanium is investigated. The experiments are performed using the two kinds of pure titanium foils (TR270C-H and TR270C-O) and stainless steel foil (SUS304-H) with 50 thickness and the cylindrical and conical punches. As a result, it is found that the peeling off the oxide film of pure titanium can be reduced by applying the fluid pressure because the friction force and contact pressure between the blank and die decreases. However, the formability is lower for pure titanium than …

In-Situ Formation And Densification Of Mgal2o4-Smalo3 Ceramics By A Single-Stage Reaction Sintering Process, Beiyue Ma, Yue Yin, Qiang Zhu, Ying Li, Guangqiang Li, Jingkun Yu Jan 2015

In-Situ Formation And Densification Of Mgal2o4-Smalo3 Ceramics By A Single-Stage Reaction Sintering Process, Beiyue Ma, Yue Yin, Qiang Zhu, Ying Li, Guangqiang Li, Jingkun Yu

Stoichiometric magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4, MA)-samarium aluminate (SmAlO3, SA) ceramics have been prepared at 1580°C for 4h from calcined magnesia (MgO), commercial alumina (Al2O3) and samarium oxide (Sm2O3) by a single-stage in-situ reaction sintering (SIRS) method. The phase compositions, microstructures, shrinkage ratio, bulk density and cold compressive strength of the MA-SA ceramics have been investigated. The ceramics with 2.5 - 7.5 wt. % Sm2O3 are composed of MA and SA phases. The microstructures of the ceramics are dense. MA particles exist as angular …

Effect Of Pre-Quenching Process On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties In A Nb-Microalloyed Low Carbon Q-P Steel, Jun Zhang, Hua Ding, Jingwei Zhao Jan 2015

Effect Of Pre-Quenching Process On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties In A Nb-Microalloyed Low Carbon Q-P Steel, Jun Zhang, Hua Ding, Jingwei Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A refined microstructure consisting of martensite and retained austenite at room temperature has been produced in a Nb-microalloyed low carbon Si-Mn steel by a novel heat-treatment, pre-quenching prior to quenching and partitioning processes (Q&Q-P). The results showed that compared with the conventional quenching and partitioning steel the mechanical properties of steel obtained by the novel treatment have been significantly improved, with a good combination of ultimate tensile strength (1000MPa) and total elongation (above 30%). Meanwhile, the volume fraction of retained austenite has been increased. It was found that the improvement of mechanical properties was mainly attributed to the enhanced TRIP …
