Effect Of Gallium Doping And Ball Milling Process On The Thermoelectric Performance Of N-Type Zno, Priyanka Jood, Germanas Peleckis, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report a systematic investigation of the thermoelectric properties of n-type Ga-doped ZnO synthesized using different ball milling conditions. Samples fabricated by the high-energy ball milling resulted in a highly dense layered structure with randomly distributed voids. These samples measured the lowest room temperature thermal conductivity, i.e., 27 W/mK due to increased phonon scattering. Furthermore, the Ga:ZnO system showed a metal–semiconductor transition above 300 K with transition temperature decreasing with increasing doping level. Measurement of the activation energy revealed the presence of one donor level around 3.9–7.8 meV and a deeper donor level around 15.4–18.1 meV below the conduction band …

Distortion behavior of blade castings in heat treatment process determines their geometrical accuracy, and improper control of it may result in additional repair, shape righting, or even rejection. This article presents a novel approach for discovering the distortion behavior of heavy blade castings during heat treatment process in production. Real-time measurements of distortion and temperature field of a heavy hydro turbine blade casting weighted 17 ton during forced air cooling in normalizing treatment process were carried out by using deformation measurement instruments and an infrared thermal imaging camera. The distortion processes of the typical locations of blade and the temperature …

Understanding The Role Of Moisture In The Self-Heating Process Of Compost Piles, Thiansiri Luangwilai, Harvinder S. Sidhu, Mark I. Nelson Jan 2012

Understanding The Role Of Moisture In The Self-Heating Process Of Compost Piles, Thiansiri Luangwilai, Harvinder S. Sidhu, Mark I. Nelson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper considers the self-heating process which occurs in a compost pile using one-dimensional spatially-dependent models and incorporating terms that account for self-heating due to both biological and oxidation mechanisms. As the moisture content in a compost pile is a crucial factor in its degradation process, we utilise a model which incorporates four mass-balance equations, namely, energy, oxygen, vapour and liquid water concentrations, to investigate the behaviour of compost piles when moisture content is present. Analyses of different initial water contents within a compost pile, different ambient relative humidities and different amounts of water added to the pile by rainstorms …

An Ontology Development Methodology To Integrate Existing Ontologies In An Ontology Development Process, Nelson K. Y Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Nicole Tsang Jan 2012

An Ontology Development Methodology To Integrate Existing Ontologies In An Ontology Development Process, Nelson K. Y Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Nicole Tsang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ontology is defmed as an explicit specification of a conceptualization while a conceptualization is an abstract, simplified view of the world that we wish to represent for some purpose. To build high quality ontologies, developers are required to choose and follow a suitable ontology development methodology in which containing a series of steps, activities and guidelines that are put together in an organized and systematic manner. Literatures show that building ontologies by reusing existing ontologies is more cost effective than building from scratch. However, majority of the methodologies only provide a very limited discussion about how to perform integration or …

Investigation Into Feasibility Of Hybrid Laser-Gmaw Process For Welding High Strength Quenched And Tempered Steel, Lenka Kuzmikova, Nathan Larkin, Zengxi Pan, Mark Callaghan, Huijun Li, John Norrish Jan 2012

Investigation Into Feasibility Of Hybrid Laser-Gmaw Process For Welding High Strength Quenched And Tempered Steel, Lenka Kuzmikova, Nathan Larkin, Zengxi Pan, Mark Callaghan, Huijun Li, John Norrish

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study, the feasibility of hybrid laser-gas metal arc welding process for replacement of conventional flux-cored arc welding procedure for welding high strength quenched and tempered steel was investigated. Experimental work focused on optimisation of process parameters to produce joint with desired properties. Hardness of the weld heat affected zone produced by both processes has been measured. Productivity and cost effectiveness of both processes were compared. It was concluded that hybrid laser-gas metal arc welding process is suitable for welding high strength quenched and tempered steel.

A Novel Integrated Model To Measure Supplier Performance Considering Qualitative And Quantitative Criteria Used In The Supplier Selection Process, Alptekin Ulutas, Senevi Kiridena, Peter Gibson, Nagesh Shukla Jan 2012

A Novel Integrated Model To Measure Supplier Performance Considering Qualitative And Quantitative Criteria Used In The Supplier Selection Process, Alptekin Ulutas, Senevi Kiridena, Peter Gibson, Nagesh Shukla

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Supplier evaluation has become a significant topic over the past few decades, as companies have become more outsourced oriented. However, previous research on this topic has not paid adequate attention to the limitations associated with the availability of accurate and reliable data relating to the performance of potential suppliers. In an attempt to address this issue, this paper proposes a novel supplier evaluation model that can handle imprecise quantitative and qualitative data. Additionally, Decision Maker's judgement regarding both qualitative and quantitative criteria are incorporated into this model so that a more comprehensive and realistic assessment of supplier performance can be …

Thermodynamic Analysis Of A High-Yield Biochemical Process For Biofuel Production, M Imroz Sohel, Michael W. Jack Jan 2012

Thermodynamic Analysis Of A High-Yield Biochemical Process For Biofuel Production, M Imroz Sohel, Michael W. Jack

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of a high-yield biochemical process for biofuel production from lignocelluosic biomass based on a previously proposed process. Unlike the standard biochemical process, which ferments sugar intermediates to ethanol, the process under consideration converts sugars to acetic acid which is esterified and hydrogenated to produce ethanol. This process has a significantly higher yield and produces no carbon dioxide. However, we find that the thermodynamic efficiency of the process is not increased in proportion to the yield gain. An additional survey of various biofuel production processes showed no direct correlation between yield and thermodynamic efficiency. This …
