Analysis Of Micro Flexible Rolling With Consideration Of Material Heterogeneity, Feijun Qu, Zhengyi Jiang, Haina Lu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper establishes a finite element model to numerically study the springback in thickness direction during micro flexible rolling process, in which 3D Voronoi tessellation has been applied to describe grain boundary and generation process of grain in the workpiece. To reflect material heterogeneity, nine kinds of mechanical properties defined by nine types of heterogeneity coefficients are selected and assigned to Voronoi polyhedrons as per the statistical distribution of hardness of grains identified by micro hardness testing. Initial workpiece thicknesses of 100, 250 and 500 μm with reduction changing from 20% to 50% are respectively considered in the numerical simulation …

Analysis Of Laminated Crack Defect In The Upsetting Process Of Heavy Disk-Shaped Forgings, Minting Wang, Dongying Li, Fan Wang, Xinliang Zang, Xuetong Li, Hong Xiao, Fengshan Du, F C. Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Using nonlinear finite element method, a thermo-mechanical coupled simulation model for the formation mechanism of the laminated crack defect has been established in the upsetting of heavy disk-shaped forgings. Through numerical simulation, the distributions of stress, equivalent strain and strain rate were analysed. Meanwhile the distribution diagram of stress state evolution was obtained, and the uncoordinated deformation, under tri-lateral compression, is determined as the main reason leading to laminated crack defect. To reveal the characteristics of the uncoordinated deformation, the variations of each variable and its gradient in numerical simulation were presented, and a combined prediction model of laminated crack …

Nonlinear Dynamical Behavior Of Axially Accelerating Beams: Three-Dimensional Analysis, Mergen H. Ghayesh, Hamed Farokhi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear dynamics of an axially accelerating beam is examined numerically taking into account all of the longitudinal, transverse, and lateral displacements and inertia. Hamilton's principle is employed in order to derive the nonlinear partial differential equations governing the longitudinal, transverse, and lateral motions. These equations are transformed into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by means of the Galerkin discretization technique. The nonlinear global dynamics of the system is then examined by time-integrating the discretized equations of motion. The results are presented in the form of bifurcation diagrams of Poincare maps, time histories, phase-plane portraits, Poincare …

Energy Analysis Of Net Zero Energy Buildings: A Case Study, Joel Anderson, Duane A. Robinson, Zhenjun Ma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The building sector is a significant contributor to global energy usage and environmental emissions. Advanced building design, optimal selection and sizing of building components, and energy efficient operation are among the key ways of significantly reducing overall building energy demand. Achieving reduction in energy demand is a key directive of the net zero energy building concept. Building designs dedicated to meeting net zero energy building requirements are becoming more commonplace as a path towards reducing the overall emissions from the built environment. This work analyses the energy demand of a net zero energy office building and compares it with a …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

There is conflicting evidence surrounding the extent of changes in resting energy expenditure (REE) in cancer. This meta-analysis aimed to establish the mean difference in REE, as kilojoules per kilogram fat-free mass, among cancer patients when compared to healthy control subjects. The secondary aim was to determine differences among different cancer types. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, and ProQuest Central were searched from the earliest records until March 2014. Studies were included if measured REE was reported as kilojoules or kilocalories per kilogram fat-free mass (FFM) in adult subjects with cancer. Twenty-seven …

Performance Analysis Of A Magnetorheological Damper With Energy Harvesting Ability, Guoliang Hu, Yun Lu, Shuaishuai Sun, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A magnetorheological (MR) damper with energy harvesting ability was proposed based on electromagnetic induction (EMI) principle. The energy harvesting part was composed of a permanent magnet array and inducing coils which move vertically. This device could act as a linear power generator when the external excitation was applied, and the kinetic energy could be converted into electrical energy due to the relative linear motion between the magnets array and the inducing coils. Finite element models of both the MR damper part and the linear power generator part were built up separately to address the magnetic flux distributions, the magnetic flux …

Flexible Analysis Of Digital Pcr Experiments Using Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Matthijs Vynck, J Vandesompele, Nele Nijs, Björn Menten, Ariane De Ganck, Olivier Thas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of digital PCR for quantification of nucleic acids is rapidly growing. A major drawback remains the lack of flexible data analysis tools. Published analysis approaches are either tailored to specific problem settings or fail to take into account sources of variability. We propose the generalized linear mixed models framework as a flexible tool for analyzing a wide range of experiments. We also introduce a method for estimating reference gene stability to improve accuracy and precision of copy number and relative expression estimates. We demonstrate the usefulness of the methodology on a complex experimental setup.

A Traffic Monitoring System For A Mixed Traffic Flow Via Road Estimation And Analysis, Nguyen Viet Hung, Le Chung Tran, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Thang Manh Hoang, Nguyen Tien Dzung

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) is the most important element in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), especially in a developing country like Vietnam with a mixed traffic flow of vehicles including motocycles and cars. A traffic flow varies in different daytime, therefore the adoption of the TMS for an adaptive control of the traffic light timing is very essential. The proposed TMS system uses one CCD camera mounted to view from the rear of moving vehicles appearing in a distance from a viewed span of the camera to the stopline of the cross-roads, which is denoted by L and statistically …

Comprehensive Performance Analysis Of Fully Cooperative Communication In Wbans, Le Chung Tran, Alfred Mertins, Xiaojing Huang, Farzad Safaei Jan 2016

Comprehensive Performance Analysis Of Fully Cooperative Communication In Wbans, Le Chung Tran, Alfred Mertins, Xiaojing Huang, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

While relay-based cooperative networks (widely known in the literature as cooperative communication), where relays only forward signals from the sources to the destination, have been extensively researched, fully cooperative systems have not been thoroughly examined. Unlike relay networks, in a fully cooperative network, each node acts as both a source node sending its own data and a relay forwarding its partner's data to the destination. Mutual cooperation between neighboring nodes is believed to improve the overall system error performance, especially when space-time codes are incorporated. However, a comprehensive performance analysis of space-time-coded fully cooperative communication from all three perspectives, namel,y …

Finite Element Method Analysis Of Surface Roughness Transfer In Micro Flexible Rolling, Feijun Qu, Haibo Xie, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Micro flexible rolling aims to fabricate submillimeter thick strips with varying thickness profile, where the surface quality of products is mainly determined by initial workpiece surface roughness and subsequent surface asperity flattening process, which is affected by process parameters during rolling. This paper shows a 3D finite element model for flexible rolling of a 250 μm thick workpiece with reduction of 20 to 50%, and rolling phase with thinner thickness indicates a better ability to decrease the surface roughness. Four types of initial workpiece surface roughness are studied in the simulation, and the influences of process parameters, such as friction …

Lubrication Characterisation Analysis Of Stainless Steel Foil During Micro Rolling, Haibo Xie, Kenichi Manabe, Tsuyoshi Furushima, Kazuo Tada, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Physical parameters, such as microscopic and roughness, play important roles in microforming process due to an increasing ratio of surface to volume of the deformed material. The study on lubrication characterisation in microforming is getting more attractive to researchers because traditional models are not reliable in this scaled down process. In this study, the micro rolling deformation characterisation has been investigated on SUS 304 stainless steel considering lubricant effect and feature size effect. The foil thickness plays an important role in the tribological features of micro rolling. The evolutions of both oil film thickness and foil surface are analysed accordingly. …

A Sensor Fault Detection Strategy For Air Handling Units Using Cluster Analysis, Rui Yan, Zhenjun Ma, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Yang Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Sensors are an essential component in the control systems of air handling units (AHUs). A biased sensor reading could result in inappropriate control and thereby increased energy consumption or unsatisfied indoor thermal comfort. This paper presents an unsupervised learning based strategy using cluster analysis for AHU sensor fault detection. The historical data recorded from sensors is first pre-processed to reduce the dimensions using principal component analysis (PCA). The clustering algorithmOrdering Points to Identify the Clustering Structure (OPTICS) is then employed to identify the spatial separated data groups (i.e. clusters),which possibly indicate the occurrence of sensor faults. The data points in …

Kinematical Limit Analysis For A Slope Reinforced With One Row Of Stabilizing Piles, Shiguo Xiao, Hong He, Jinxiu Zeng Jan 2016

Kinematical Limit Analysis For A Slope Reinforced With One Row Of Stabilizing Piles, Shiguo Xiao, Hong He, Jinxiu Zeng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Stabilizing piles are commonly used to improve slope stability. The load that a pile should sustain and the associated slip surface under a prescribed factor of safety are two critical design parameters in practice. Based on the kinematically admissible failure mechanism, a limit analysis approach is introduced, which considers two potential slip surfaces that individually lie in the upslope and downslope of the piles. The explicit formulas for the upslope thrust force and downslope resistance on a pile are derived, which enables the calculation of the maximum load on a pile and the corresponding critical slip surfaces using a computer …
