Equivalence And Stable Isomorphism Of Groupoids, And Diagonal-Preserving Stable Isomorphisms Of Graph C*-Algebras And Leavitt Path Algebras, Toke Meier Carlsen, Efren Ruiz, Aidan Sims

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We prove that ample groupoids with σ-compact unit spaces are equivalent if and only if they are stably isomorphic in an appropriate sense, and relate this to Matui's notion of Kakutani equivalence. We use this result to show that diagonal-preserving stable isomorphisms of graph C*-algebras or Leavitt path algebras give rise to isomorphisms of the groupoids of the associated stabilised graphs. We deduce that the Leavitt path algebras LZ(E2) and LZ(E2-) are not stably *-isomorphic.

Vibration-Induced Aerodynamic Loads On Large Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blades, Xiong Liu, Cheng Lu, Shi Liang, Ajit R. Godbole, Yan Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The blades of a large Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) are subjected to significant vibrations during operation. The vibrations affect the dynamic flow field around the blade and consequently alter the aerodynamic forces on the blade. In order to better understand the influence of blade vibrations on the aerodynamic loads, the dynamic stall characteristics of an S809 airfoil undergoing translational motion as well as pitching motion were investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. Simulation results indicated that both the out-of-plane and in-plane translational motions of the airfoil affect the unsteady aerodynamic forces significantly. In order to investigate the effects …

Factors Governing Mass Transfer During Membrane Electrodialysis Regeneration Of Licl Solution For Liquid Desiccant Dehumidification Systems, Ali Hussein Al-Jubainawi, Zhenjun Ma, Yi Guo, Long D. Nghiem, Paul Cooper, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study investigates the mass transfer mechanisms and the performance of membrane electrodialysis (ED) for regenerating lithium chloride (LiCl) solution commonly used in liquid desiccant dehumidification systems. Experiments were conducted using an ED experimental system while numerical simulation was performed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The results showed that the water flux transfer due to osmosis and electro-osmosis during ED regeneration of LiCl liquid desiccant was significant and could not be ignored. The water flux due to osmosis and electro-osmosis is directly associated with the osmotic gradient and the applied current between the cathode and anode, respectively. The average flux of water …

Micromechanics-Based Investigation Of Fouled Ballast Using Large-Scale Triaxial Tests And Discrete Element Modeling, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Railway ballast comprises unbounded discrete grains that are often used to form a load-bearing platform for tracks. Ballast degradation as trains pass over the tracks and infiltration of external fines including slurried (pumped) fine subgrade soils are two of the main reasons for ballast fouling. Fouling causes tracks to settle and also reduces the load-bearing capacity, which is associated with a reduction in internal friction and increased lateral spreading of the ballast layer. This paper presents a study of mobilized friction angle, volumetric behavior, and associated evolutions of contact and fabric anisotropy of fouled ballast subjected to monotonic triaxial loading …

Thin-Film Composite Forward Osmosis Membranes Functionalized With Graphene Oxide-Silver Nanocomposites For Biofouling Control, Andreia Faria, Caihong Liu, Ming Xie, Francois Perreault, Long D. Nghiem, Jun Ma, Menachem Elimelech Jan 2017

Thin-Film Composite Forward Osmosis Membranes Functionalized With Graphene Oxide-Silver Nanocomposites For Biofouling Control, Andreia Faria, Caihong Liu, Ming Xie, Francois Perreault, Long D. Nghiem, Jun Ma, Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Innovative approaches to prevent bacterial attachment and biofilm growth on membranes are critically needed to avoid decreasing membrane performance due to biofouling. In this study, we propose the fabrication of anti-biofouling thin-film composite membranes functionalized with graphene oxide-silver nanocomposites. In our membrane modification strategy, carboxyl groups on the graphene oxide-silver nanosheets are covalently bonded to carboxyl groups on the surface of thin-film composite membranes via a crosslinking reaction. Further characterization, such as scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, revealed the immobilization of graphene oxide-silver nanocomposites on the membrane surface. Graphene oxide-silver modified membranes exhibited an 80% inactivation rate against attached …

Liquid Desiccant Lithium Chloride Regeneration By Membrane Distillation For Air Conditioning, Hung Duong, Faisal I. Hai, Ali Aljubainawi, Zhenjun Ma, Tao He, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Liquid desiccant air conditioning (LDAC) has emerged as an attractive technology for improving indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Regeneration of liquid desiccants is critical to sustain the process efficiency of LDAC. This study explores membrane distillation (MD) for regeneration of lithium chloride (LiCl) desiccant solution commonly used in LDAC. The results demonstrate the viability of MD for LiCl regeneration. The MD process at the feed temperature of 65 °C could increase the LiCl concentration up to 29 wt.% without any observable LiCl loss. Given the high concentration of the LiCl solution feed, unlike traditional desalination applications, the impact of …

Axial Load-Bending Moment Diagrams Of Gfrp Reinforced Columns And Gfrp Encased Square Columns, Jim Youssef, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) pultruded materials are available in a wide variety of shapes, including bars, I-sections, C-sections and other structural sections. Due to their high durability, low self-weight and reduced maintenance costs, these FRP materials are becoming a competitive option for replacing steel as structural materials especially in corrosive environments. This paper summarizes an experimental program on the axial and flexural behaviour of square concrete members reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and embedded with pultruded GFRP structural sections under different loading conditions. Furthermore, an analytical model is presented to predict the axial load-bending moment interaction diagrams …

Development Of Microencapsulated Phase Change Material For Solar Thermal Energy Storage, Weiguang Su, Jo Darkwa, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper a novel microencapsulated phase change material (MF-3) has been developed and tested for solar assisted hot water storage systems. Even though the morphology of the sample was affected by the type of emulsifier used for fabrication it recorded the highest energy storage capacity of 126 kJ/kg with encapsulation efficiency of 97.4% as compared with other developed samples. For the purpose of assessing its thermal effectiveness it was theoretically evaluated in a compacted fixed bed TES unit and found to be capable of achieving a higher energy storage density as well as relatively smaller physical storage size than …

Hybrid Model Predictive Control Of A Residential Hvac System With On-Site Thermal Energy Generation And Storage, Massimo Fiorentini, Josh Wall, Zhenjun Ma, Julio H. Braslavsky, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes the development, implementation and experimental investigation of a Hybrid Model Predictive Control (HMPC) strategy to control solar-assisted heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems with on-site thermal energy generation and storage. A comprehensive approach to the thermal energy management of a residential building is presented to optimise the scheduling of the available thermal energy resources to meet a comfort objective. The system has a hybrid nature with both continuous variables and discrete, logic-driven operating modes. The proposed control strategy is organized in two hierarchical levels. At the high-level, an HMPC controller with a 24-h prediction horizon and a …

Displaced Hardness Peak Phenomenon In Heat-Affected Zone Of Welded Quenched And Tempered Em812 Steel, Druce P. Dunne, W Pang Jan 2017

Displaced Hardness Peak Phenomenon In Heat-Affected Zone Of Welded Quenched And Tempered Em812 Steel, Druce P. Dunne, W Pang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Investigations of microstructural and hardness gradients in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of quenched and tempered (Q&T) steels have indicated that peak hardness does not occur in the grain-coarsened heat-affected zone (GCHAZ) adjacent to the fusion boundary, which is typical of ferritic steels, but corresponds more closely to the grain-refined region (GRHAZ). This phenomenon, the displaced hardness peak (DHP) effect, is considered to arise when the hardenability of the steel is high enough to result in the same microstructure in the GC and GR heat-affected zones, except for significant refinement of the microstructure of the GRHAZ, which increases the hardness and …

This study investigated the effects of fabrication technique on the tensile properties of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) flat coupon tests. A total of 20 FRP flat coupons were prepared by two different techniques, which were tested in tension until failure. The first technique of preparing the FRP coupons was based on the recommendation of ASTM D7565/D7565M-10, named the “Cutting Technique,” while the second technique, named the “Folding Technique,” was proposed by this study. Experimental results from this study indicated that preparing FRP coupons using the Cutting Technique resulted in a reduction in the tensile properties as compared to coupons prepared …

Simulation Ballasted Track Behavior: Numerical Treatment And Field Application, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The load deformation of ballasted rail tracks subjected to cyclic loading is investigated experimentally using a large-scale track process simulation apparatus and numerically through a combined discrete element-finite-difference approach. Laboratory tests were performed to examine the deformation and degradation of ballast subjected to cyclic loading at 15 Hz and a lateral confinement of 10 kPa 10 kPa. The laboratory results reveal that ballast undergoes significant deformation during the initial load cycles, followed by gradually increasing deformation attaining a steady value toward the end of testing. A numerical model based on a combined discrete element method (DEM) and finite-difference method (FDM) …

Dynamic Exergy Analysis For The Thermal Storage Optimization Of The Building Envelope, Valentina Bonetti, Georgios Kokogiannakis Jan 2017

Dynamic Exergy Analysis For The Thermal Storage Optimization Of The Building Envelope, Valentina Bonetti, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

As a measure of energy "quality", exergy is meaningful for comparing the potential for thermal storage. Systems containing the same amount of energy could have considerably different capabilities in matching a demand profile, and exergy measures this difference. Exergy stored in the envelope of buildings is central in sustainability because the environment could be an unlimited source of energy if its interaction with the envelope is optimised for maintaining the indoor conditions within comfort ranges. Since the occurring phenomena are highly fluctuating, a dynamic exergy analysis is required; however, dynamic exergy modelling is complex and has not hitherto been implemented …

Degradation Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products By White-Rot Fungi-A Critical Review, Muhammad Bilal Asif, Faisal I. Hai, Lakhveer Singh, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

White-rot fungi (WRF) mediated treatment can offer an environmentally friendly platform for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater. These PPCPs may have adverse impacts on aquatic organisms and even human and thus their removal during wastewater treatment is of significant interest to the water industry. Whole-cell WRF or their extracellular lignin modifying enzymes (LMEs) have been reported to efficiently degrade PPCPs that are persistent to conventional activated sludge process. WRF mediated treatment of PPCPs depends on a number of factors including physicochemical properties of PPCPs (e.g., hydrophobicity and chemical structure) and wastewater matrix (e.g., pH, …

A Torsional Mre Joint For A C-Shaped Robotic Leg, M D. Christie, Shuaishuai Sun, Donghong Ning, Haiping Du, Shiwu Zhang, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Serving to improve stability and energy efficiency during locomotion, in nature, animals modulate their leg stiffness to adapt to their terrain. Now incorporated into many locomotive robot designs, such compliance control can enable disturbance rejection and improved transition between changing ground conditions. This paper presents a novel design of a variable stiffness leg utilizing a magnetorheological elastomer joint in a literal rolling spring loaded inverted pendulum (R-SLIP) morphology. Through the semi-active control of this hybrid permanent-magnet and coil design, variable stiffness is realized, offering a design which is capable of both softening and stiffening in an adaptive sort of way, …

Fractal Spectral Triples On Kellendonk's C*-Algebra Of A Substitution Tiling, Michael Mampusti, Michael F. Whittaker Jan 2017

Fractal Spectral Triples On Kellendonk's C*-Algebra Of A Substitution Tiling, Michael Mampusti, Michael F. Whittaker

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

.We introduce a new class of noncommutative spectral triples on Kellendonk's C*-algebra associated with a nonperiodic substitution tiling. These spectral triples are constructed from fractal trees on tilings, which define a geodesic distance between any two tiles in the tiling. Since fractals typically have infinite Euclidean length, the geodesic distance is defined using Perron-Frobenius theory, and is self-similar with scaling factor given by the Perro-Frobenius eigenvalue. We show that each spectral triple is θ-summable, and respects the hierarchy of the substitution system. To elucidate our results, we construct a fractal tree on the Penrose tiling, and explicitly show how it …

A Decomposition Approach Via Fourier Sine Transform For Valuing American Knock-Out Options With Rebates, Nhat Tan Le, Duy-Minh Dang, Tran Vu Khanh Jan 2017

A Decomposition Approach Via Fourier Sine Transform For Valuing American Knock-Out Options With Rebates, Nhat Tan Le, Duy-Minh Dang, Tran Vu Khanh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present an innovative decomposition approach for computing the price and the hedging parameters of American knock-out options with a time-dependent rebate. Our approach is built upon: (i) the Fourier sine transform applied to the partial differential equation with a finite time-dependent spatial domain that governs the option price, and (ii) the decomposition technique that partitions the price of the option into that of the European counterpart and an early exercise premium. Our analytic representations can generalize a number of existing decomposition formulas for some European-style and American-style options. A complexity analysis of the method, together with numerical results, show …

Pricing Credit Default Swaps Under A Multi-Scale Stochastic Volatility Model, Wenting Chen, Xin-Jiang He Jan 2017

Pricing Credit Default Swaps Under A Multi-Scale Stochastic Volatility Model, Wenting Chen, Xin-Jiang He

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we consider the pricing of credit default swaps (CDSs) with the reference asset driven by a geometric Brownian motion with a multi-scale stochastic volatility (SV), which is a two-factor volatility process with one factor controlling the fast time scale and the other representing the slow time scale. A key feature of the current methodology is to establish an equivalence relationship between the CDS and the down-and-out binary option through the discussion of "no default" probability, while balancing the two SV processes with the perturbation method. An approximate but closed-form pricing formula for the CDS contract is finally …

The K-Theoretic Bulk-Edge Correspondence For Topological Insulators, Chris Bourne, Johannes Kellendonk, Adam C. Rennie Jan 2017

The K-Theoretic Bulk-Edge Correspondence For Topological Insulators, Chris Bourne, Johannes Kellendonk, Adam C. Rennie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We study the application of Kasparov theory to topological insulator systems and the bulk-edge correspondence. We consider observable algebras as modelled by crossed products, where bulk and edge systems may be linked by a short exact sequence. We construct unbounded Kasparov modules encoding the dynamics of the crossed product. We then link bulk and edge Kasparov modules using the Kasparov product. Because of the anti-linear symmetries that occur in topological insulator models, real C*-algebras and KKO-theory must be used.

Optical Dispersive Shock Waves In Defocusing Colloidal Media, Xin An, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth Jan 2017

Optical Dispersive Shock Waves In Defocusing Colloidal Media, Xin An, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The propagation of an optical dispersive shock wave, generated from a jump discontinuity in light intensity, in a defocusing colloidal medium is analysed. The equations governing nonlinear light propagation in a colloidal medium consist of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the beam and an algebraic equation for the medium response. In the limit of low light intensity, these equations reduce to a perturbed higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Solutions for the leading and trailing edges of the colloidal dispersive shock wave are found using modulation theory. This is done for both the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the full colloid …

Predicting Concentrations Of Fine Particles In Enclosed Vessels Using A Camera Based System And Cfd Simulations, L Lulbadda Waduge, S Zigan, Luke Stone, A Belaidi, P Garcia-Trinanes Jan 2017

Predicting Concentrations Of Fine Particles In Enclosed Vessels Using A Camera Based System And Cfd Simulations, L Lulbadda Waduge, S Zigan, Luke Stone, A Belaidi, P Garcia-Trinanes

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

One of the main challenges in industries handling biomass is the consequence of the particle breakage of pelletised biomass in smaller fractions which can lead to fine particles smaller 500 ¿m that can form dust clouds in the handling and storing equipment. These dust clouds present potential health and safety hazards as well as dust explosion hazards to plant operators because the airborne dust can occur in high concentrations close to the dust explosion limits of the biomass material, during the filling process of storage silos. Preventing dust explosions and the damage of plant infrastructures requires a profound understanding of …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper proposes an optimum resistive type fault current limiter (OR-FCL) as an efficient solution to achieve maximum fault ride-through (FRT) capability of fixed-speed wind turbines (FSWT) during various grid faults. In this paper, a dedicated control circuit is designed for the OR-FCL that enables it to insert an optimum value of resistance in the FSWT's fault current's path for improving transient behavior of the FSWT. The optimum resistance value depends on fault location and prefault active power. The control circuit of the proposed OR-FCL is capable of calculating the optimum resistance value for all the prefault conditions. By using …

Stabilization Of Track Substructure With Geoinclusions- Experimental Evidence And Dem Simulation, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This article reviews on current knowledge of rail track geomechanics, including several important concepts and topics related to laboratory testing and computational modelling, to study the shear stress-strain and deformation of ballast improved by geosynthetics and recycled rubber mats. The effect that impact loads have on ballast degradation and its mitigation due to resilient synthetic mats (i.e. rubber mats) between the ballast and the subballast is investigated using large-scale impact-testing apparatus. Computational modelling with finite element and discrete element methods are increasingly being used to model ballasted tracks reinforced with geosynthetics to capture the continuum media of formation soils and …

Stacking Fault Tetrahedron Induced Plasticity In Copper Single Crystal, Liang Zhang, Cheng Lu, Anh Kiet Tieu, Lihong Su, Xing Zhao, Linqing Pei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Stacking fault tetrahedron (SFT) is the most common type of vacancy clustered defects in fcc metals and alloys, and can play an important role in the mechanical properties of metallic materials. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out to investigate the incipience of plasticity and the underlying atomic mechanisms in copper single crystals with SFT. Different deformation mechanisms of SFT were reported due to the crystal orientations and loading directions (compression and tension). The results showed that the incipient plasticity in crystals with SFT resulted from the heterogeneous dislocation nucleation from SFT, so the stress required for …

A Framework To Assess Newmark-Type Simplified Methods For Evaluation Of Earthquake-Induced Deformation Of Embankments, Mojtaba E. Kan, Hossein Taiebat, Mahdi Taiebat

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The simplified procedures for evaluation of the earthquake induced displacement in earth and rockfill dams are widely used in practice. These methods are simple, inexpensive, and substantially less time consuming as compared to the complicated stress-deformation approaches. They are especially recommended to be used as a screening tool, to identify embankments with marginal factor of safety, assuming that these methods always give conservative estimates of settlements. However recent studies show that application of these methods may not be conservative in some cases, especially when the tuning ratio of a dam is within a certain range. In this paper the fundamental …

Full Scale Co-Digestion Of Wastewater Sludge And Food Waste: Bottlenecks And Possibilities, Long D. Nghiem, Konrad Koch, David Bolzonella, Jörg E. Drewes

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Wastewater treatment plants in many countries use anaerobic digesters for biosolids management and biogas generation. Opportunities exist to utilise the spare capacity of these digesters to co-digest food waste and sludge for energy recovery and a range of other economic and environmental benefits. This paper provides a critical perspective for full-scale implementation of co-digestion of food waste and wastewater sludge. Data compiled from full-scale facilities and the peer-reviewed literature revealed several key bottlenecks hindering full-scale implementation of co-digestion. Indeed, co-digestion applications remain concentrated mostly in countries or regions with favourable energy and waste management policies. Not all environmental benefits from …

Direct Immobilization Of Laccase On Titania Nanoparticles From Crude Enzyme Extracts Of P. Ostreatus Culture For Micro-Pollutant Degradation, Chao Ji, Ngoc Luong Nguyen, Jingwei Hou, Faisal I. Hai, Vicki Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Enzymatic treatment can effectively degrade recalcitrant micro-pollutants in wastewater. However, its industrial application is constrained by the high cost of the purified enzyme preparations. This work introduces a novel technique to directly immobilize the in-house crude enzyme extracts (from P. ostreatus) onto the functionalized TiO2 nanoparticle surface. Comprehensive investigations were carried out to understand the interactions between complex crude enzyme extracts and the immobilization support. By simple dilution of the crude enzyme extract, the immobilization efficiency can be significantly improved. The resultant biocatalytic nanoparticles had comparable performance to the immobilized purified commercial enzymes. Finally, the micropollutant degradation capability …
