Experimental Investigation Of The Behaviour Of Concrete Beams Reinforced With Gfrp Bars Under Static And Impact Loading, Matthew Goldston, Alex M. Remennikov, M Neaz Sheikh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Composite materials, including Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars, have been gaining momentum as alternatives to traditional steel reinforcements in civil and structural engineering sectors. FRP materials are non-corrosive, non-conductive, and lightweight and possess high longitudinal tensile strength, which are advantageous for their use in civil infrastructure. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the effects of the use of glass FRP (GFRP) bars as internal reinforcement on the behaviour of concrete beams. Both static and dynamic (impact) behaviours of the beam have been investigated. Twelve GFRP reinforced concrete (RC) beams were designed, cast and tested. Six GFRP …

Performance Improvement Of Rail Track Substructure Using Artificial Inclusions - Experimental And Numerical Studies, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar, Ngoc Trung Ngo, Tim Neville

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Large and frequent loads from heavy freight and passenger trains often lead to the progressive track deterioration. The excessive deformation and degradation of ballast and unacceptable differential settlement of track and/or pumping of underlying soft subgrade soils necessitates frequent and costly track maintenance. However, artificial inclusions such as geogrids and shockmats can mitigate ballast degradation and improve track performance. A quantitative assessment of the influence of breakage, fouling, and the effects of artificial inclusions on the shear behaviour of ballast can be performed either experimentally or numerically. Numerical modelling can simulate these aspects subject to various types of loading and …

Orthogonal Experimental Design Of Titanium Dioxide - Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Electrospun Nanocomposite Membranes For Photocatalytic Applications, Andrew Vild, Sara Teixeira, Klaus Kuhn, Gianaurelio Cuniberti, Vitor Sencadas Jan 2016

Orthogonal Experimental Design Of Titanium Dioxide - Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Electrospun Nanocomposite Membranes For Photocatalytic Applications, Andrew Vild, Sara Teixeira, Klaus Kuhn, Gianaurelio Cuniberti, Vitor Sencadas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An orthogonal experimental method was designed to assess the influence of the electrospinning processing parameters on average diameter and distribution of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibers. Based on the orthogonal experimental design analysis, electrospun TiO2-PMMA nanocomposites were processed with the optimal polymer processing conditions to obtain thin fibers with a high overall surface area. Further it was found that the average fiber diameter decreases from 2.0 ± 0.5 down to 1.2 ± 0.2 μm with increasing photocatalyst content. Moreover, the wettability of samples was independent of the filler amount, and showed strong hydrophobic behavior. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that for polymer solutions …

Experimental Study On Frp Tube Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Different Loading Conditions, Weiqiang Wang, M Neaz Sheikh, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube reinforced concrete (FTRC) columns under different loading conditions was investigated in this study. Four groups of 16 specimens were cast and tested. Specimens in the first group (the reference group) were re- inforced with longitudinal steel bars and steel helices (Group REF). Specimens in the second group were reinforced with intact glass FRP tubes (Group IT). Specimens in the third group were also reinforced with intact glass FRP tubes. In addition, polymer grid was embedded into the concrete cover to reduce the cover spalling (Group ITG). Specimens in the fourth group were reinforced …

Experimental And Numerical Study On The Effect Of Zddp Films On Sticking During Hot Rolling Of Ferritic Stainless Steel Strip, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Dianyao Gong, Xiawei Cheng, Jingwei Zhao, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP) films on sticking during hot rolling of a ferritic stainless steel strip. The surface characterization and crack propagation of the oxide scale are very important for understanding the mechanism of the sticking. The high-temperature oxidation of one typical ferritic stainless was conducted at 1373 K (1100 °C) for understanding its microstructure and surface morphology. Hot-rolling tests of a ferritic stainless steel strip show that no obvious cracks among the oxide scale were observed with the application of ZDDP. A finite element method model was …

Experimental Investigation Of Gfrp-Reinforced And Gfrp-Encased Square Concrete Specimens Under Axial And Eccentric Load, And Four-Point Bending Test, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Jim Youssef

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the axial and flexural behavior of square concrete members reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and embedded with pultruded GFRP structural sections under different loading conditions. The main parameters investigated in this study were the influence of the type of internal reinforcement (steel bars, GFRP bars and pultruded GFRP structural I-sections and C-sections) and magnitude of load eccentricity on the flexural and compressive behavior of square concrete members. To fulfil the objectives of this study, 16 reinforced concrete specimens were tested, of which 12 were tested as columns under …

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation On Micro Rolling For Ultra-Thin Strip, Haibo Xie, Kenichi Manabe, Tsuyoshi Furushima, Kazuo Tada, Zhengyi Jiang Jan 2016

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation On Micro Rolling For Ultra-Thin Strip, Haibo Xie, Kenichi Manabe, Tsuyoshi Furushima, Kazuo Tada, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The demand for miniaturized parts and miniaturized semi-finished products is increasing nowadays, because microforming processes can improve production rate and minimize material waste due to less forming passes. However, traditional macro metal forming processes and modelling cannot be simply scaled down to produce miniaturized micro parts. In this study, a 2-Hi micro rolling mill has been successfully built. Experimental and numerical investigations on the micro rolling process for ultra-thin SUS 304 stainless steel strip have been conducted. The experimental results show that the micro rolling deformation of ultra-thin strip is influenced by size effect which results from the specimen size …

The use of high-strength steels in the manufacture of energy pipelines, coupled with the transition to larger pipe diameters and greater wall thicknesses, has led to an increased potential for cracking including hydrogen assisted cracking of energy pipelines due to higher constraint induced stresses. In the present study, a modified version of the Welding Institute of Canada (MWIC) restraint test was used to simulate the constraint conditions of full-scale girth welds on energy pipelines, allowing the influence of welding process parameters on crack formation to be assessed. MWIC test samples of X70 grade high-strength low alloy pipeline steel were manually …

Learning Network Storage Curriculum With Experimental Case Based On Embedded Systems, Qingguo Zhou, Jiong Wu, Ting Wu, Jun Shen, Rui Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we present an experimental case for the course of "Network Storage and Security," which benefited from an improved learning outcome for our students. The newly designed experiments-based contents are merged into the current course to help students obtain practical experiences about network storage. The experiments aim to build a network storage system based on available resources instead of any specialized network storage equipment. Technically, students can learn general practical knowledge of network storage on iSCSI (a network storage protocol based on IP technology) and also the technologies of embedded system. Through the experimental case, we found that …
