Ap Soundbank, Larry Sheret
Ap Soundbank, Larry Sheret
Librarian Research
Working in conjunction with AccuWeather, the world’s largest corporate supplier of weather information and images, AP is now making its sound archive available to schools (K–12) and public and academic libraries. AccuWeather’s mission is to supply copyright-cleared sound to subscribers for educational purposes over the internet, using an interface that is easily and intuitively understood by non-news professionals. The Associated Press (AP) formed in 1848 when six daily newspapers in New York City collaborated on the installation of a telegraphic relay to transmit foreign news brought by ships docking in the harbor. AP began adding audio content to its news …

Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews
Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Research
The purpose of this seminar is to acquaint participants with the ever-changing characteristics, often conflicting issues of causation, and various proposed solutions to the myriad of problems associated with gangs in schools. Special attention is given to the evolving nature of gangs in K-12 educational institutions (e.g., new types of juvenile groups developing and their associated behavior). Traditional subjects such as gang recruitment, initiation, and criminal activity are examined by discussing the many ways they manifest themselves in the school setting. Finally, a conceptual framework is presented by which a school can identify, understand, and begin to address a potential …

A Strategy For Rural Financial Market Reform: Applying The Financial Systems Approach In Ghana, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Abor Yeboah
A Strategy For Rural Financial Market Reform: Applying The Financial Systems Approach In Ghana, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Abor Yeboah
Economics Faculty Research
We construct, using methods advocated in one strand of the Financial Systems Approach literature, a reform-and-renewal program for one of Ghana’s struggling Rural Banks--the Kaaseman Rural Bank. Questionnaire results, local informal financial practices, recent institutional innovations in Ghanaian finance, the experiences of successful “Nontraditional” rural finance institutions in developing countries, and the operating structure of the Rural Bank program indicate that this bank can implement a group-lending scheme that will reduce significantly its transaction costs and those of its customers. We thus demonstrate how the Financial Systems Approach can be employed to promote sustainable rural financial intermediation in a specific …

Revival Of Traditions In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Anara Tabyshalieva
Revival Of Traditions In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Anara Tabyshalieva
History Faculty Research
The collapse of the Soviet Union gave the unexpected gift of independence in 1991 to five new states in Central Asia-Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. In common with other post-socialist countries, these states are currently going through a transition period characterized by serious and worsening social and economic problems. The 55 million people who live in the region are facing problems of overpopulation, a chronic decline in living standards, and ecological crisis. There has also been a revival of patriarchal traditions and a reversal of female emancipation: The combination of Soviet and Muslim components has led to an …

The Effects Of Anxiety Management And Study Skills Training On Test Anxiety In College Students, Karen Carter-Harvey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study measured the effects of anxiety management and study skills training on test anxiety in college students. Twenty-one college students from two sections of Introductory Sociology were involved in the study. The Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) and exam scores were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. Pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test measures were obtained. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated no significant difference on TAI scores or exam scores between the control and experimental groups. Recommendations for further research are given.
A Study Of A Manufacturing Consortium Pre-Employment Training Program, Carol L. Crotty
A Study Of A Manufacturing Consortium Pre-Employment Training Program, Carol L. Crotty
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The southern Ohio and northern Kentucky area is a region characterized by an economy in transition from the manufacturing sector to the service and retail sectors (Scioto County Government, 1998-00), which is causing various pressures on the workforce there. For example, the unemployment rate of Scioto County, Ohio, a centrally-located county in the region, was 9.7% in 1996, or almost twice the unemployment rate for the state of Ohio (Scioto County Government, 1998-00). Despite the fact that manufacturers in the area reported no difficulty in obtaining a satisfactory quantity of non-experienced assembly-line workers (ERISS Corporation, 2000), five local manufacturers were …
President Clinton's Crisis Rhetoric And The Post-Cold War World: A Dramatistic Perspective, Christopher R. Darr
President Clinton's Crisis Rhetoric And The Post-Cold War World: A Dramatistic Perspective, Christopher R. Darr
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Presidential rhetoric has become an important field of study for scholars. Political scientists as well as communication researchers have long been interested in the role of presidential speech. Particularly in the mass media age, what presidents say has a great influence on our nation’s domestic and foreign affairs (Ceaser, Thurow, Tulis, & Bessette, 1981). Presidents can communicate directly with the public using radio and television, and their words can be carried via journalists to the public through a variety of newspapers, magazines and other media outlets. The purposes of this presidential rhetoric are many: to inform the public of policy …

Does The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children / 3rd Edition Discriminate Between Ld And Non-Ld Children, Ages 9 To 16 Years Old?, Matthew E. Dehmlow
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether the Wechsler’s Intelligence Scale for Children / 3rd Edition (WISC-III) can discriminate between students with learning disabilities (LD students) and students without learning disabilities (non-LD students). Although the WISC-III has established itself as a valuable psychological instrument for measuring intelligence, the subtests of the WISC-IH have been selected to examine possible differentiating patterns when examining a group of LD subjects and comparing their subtest results to a group of non-LD subjects. The current study proposes to examine the capability of the WISC-HI’s subtests to discriminate between a population of …

The Creative Writer: An Examination Of Early Childhood Environment, Psychopathology, And Personality Traits, Cynthia I. Hagan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The early childhood environment, the pathology, and the personality traits of non-eminent creative writers were compared to those of non-creative artists. The stated issues were examined using a thirty-item, forced choice questionaire. The results indicated that the non-creative writer group experienced more early childhood trauma than did the non-creative artist group. The findings are congruent with previous research and supports the position that early childhood environment plays a significant role in the development of creativity.

Both groups, males and females, had more positive attitudes toward individuals with physical disabilities …
"Expansion Of The Citizenship Role": Altruistic Behaviors Of Buffalo Creek Residents Following The Flood, Julia Ann Lewis
"Expansion Of The Citizenship Role": Altruistic Behaviors Of Buffalo Creek Residents Following The Flood, Julia Ann Lewis
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The residents of Buffalo Creek Hollow engaged in a variety of helping behaviors following a 1972 flood. In Everything In Its Path: Destruction of Community in the Buffalo Creek Flood Kai Erikson (1976) described these residents as being numbed and apathetic, doing nothing to help themselves or anyone else. They were stuck in the initial stages of Wallace’s “disaster syndrome” and could not help the people around them. Dynes (1974), Dynes and Quarantelli (1972), and Barton (1969), on the other hand, wrote that people in disasters tend to act in an altruistic manner, helping victims whenever they can. Dynes (1974) …
A Holistic Approach To Managing Behavioral Issues With Persons With Mental Retardation In Extended Care Facilities, Darrell Lilly
A Holistic Approach To Managing Behavioral Issues With Persons With Mental Retardation In Extended Care Facilities, Darrell Lilly
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Providing long term care for individuals with mental retardation is one of the most difficult issues confronting mental health and extended care facilities. Inappropriate behaviors related to long term institutionalization present an exceptional challenge for those caring for persons with mental retardation. Applied Humanism emphasizes a holistic view of the person. It recognizes that encouragement, responsibility, the right of choice, and an understanding of human potential are important elements for helping mentally retarded persons develop socially appropriate behaviors. This study examined the principles of applied humanism in the management of inappropriate behaviors among mentally retarded persons in an extended care …
