Expectations Of Job Responsibilities Of Recreation And Sports Managers, Jennifer Y. Mak
Management Faculty Research
The purpose of this study was to identify whether there were differences in the expectations of job responsibilities between different levels of recreation and sports managers towards the same post. The problem was divided into two sub-problems: (l) to determine the relationship in the perceived importance of entry-level managers' job responsibilities between entry-level managers and middle-level managers; and (2) to determine the relationship in the perceived importance of middle-level managers job responsibilities between middle-level managers and top-level managers. Several items were found to have significant difference in the perceptions among the subjects.
"The Boys'll Listen To Me": The Labor Career Of William Blizzard, Shae Ronald Davidson
"The Boys'll Listen To Me": The Labor Career Of William Blizzard, Shae Ronald Davidson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In the Fall of 1892, Timothy and Sarah Blizzard gave birth to a son. Timothy and Sarah began their family during a transitional period in West Virginia’s history. The couple started their lives as farmers. However, the potential income from West Virginia’s coal industry encouraged them to abandon this lifestyle and to plunge into the new industrial economy. Timothy became a miner, while Sarah took on the role of a mother living in a company town. Both became involved in the earliest organization drives of United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), whose efforts to organize the state had started only …
Seniors' Knowledge Of Elder Abuse, Neglect, And Exploitation In Urban Versus Rural West Virginia, Debra S. Evans
Seniors' Knowledge Of Elder Abuse, Neglect, And Exploitation In Urban Versus Rural West Virginia, Debra S. Evans
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Elder abuse, elder neglect/elder self-neglect, and elder exploitation, often referred to as elder maltreatment, is a present reality in the world today. Available research is limited since this topic has been formally recognized only since 1970. To date, limited progress has been made in understanding what elder maltreatment entails and its scope. The purpose of the present study was to test the knowledge of urban and rural West Virginia senior citizens (ages 55 and above) on the given topic. One-hundred and nine senior citizens from four senior citizen centers in WV (two urban and two rural) were included in this …
Group Productivity And How It Is Affected By An Imposed Group Structure, Vicki Fenwick
Group Productivity And How It Is Affected By An Imposed Group Structure, Vicki Fenwick
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The following study examined the ability of the stepladder technique to produce a high number of quality solutions using an applied industrial brainstorming task. Subjects were divided into three conditions; the alone group, the unstructured group, and the stepladder technique group. Each group then performed a task which required participants to provide solutions for an industrial brainstorming task. The quality and the quantity of the solutions were measured for each group. Two analysis of variance (ANOVA) procedures were conducted but revealed no significant differences for either quantity or quality. Therefore, the stepladder technique showed no prominent advantages in this particular …
A Content Analysis Of Televised Health News Coverage Within The Huntington, West Virginia Designated Market Area, Leigh Suzanne Hall
A Content Analysis Of Televised Health News Coverage Within The Huntington, West Virginia Designated Market Area, Leigh Suzanne Hall
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Local media should carefully consider whether or not their health information coverage provides current and useful information to people living within their viewing area. Media play an important role in providing Americans with pertinent health information. As Greenberg and Wartenber (1990) suggest, “American people receive two-thirds more cancer prevention information from television than from their physicians.” Therefore, local television media should make a conscious effort to educate themselves about which health diseases and problems most affect people within their viewing area. For example, people living in Appalachia experience health conditions that are not consistent with those experienced in every region …
The Clinical Utility Of The Jesness Inventory, Stephanie J. Hayes-Harris
The Clinical Utility Of The Jesness Inventory, Stephanie J. Hayes-Harris
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Because previous research findings on the Jesness Inventory have been relatively inconsistent, the current study was conducted to further examine this instrument's reliability, convergent validity and classificatory ability. A 3 to 11 month test-retest interval used with 42 adjudicated adolescents yielded a mean correlation coefficient of .60 and suggested that the stability of the 11 individual subscales is questionable. Using 42 adjudicated adolescents and 48 outpatients, many significant correlations were obtained between the Jesness Inventory and the Adolescent Multiphasic Personality Inventory subscales. Similarly, the Asocial Index accurately classified the adjudicated adolescents as delinquent and the outpatient adolescents as nondelinquent, as …
From The Southeast To Fort Ancient: A Survey Of Shell Gorgets In West Virginia, Darla Spencer Hoffman
From The Southeast To Fort Ancient: A Survey Of Shell Gorgets In West Virginia, Darla Spencer Hoffman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
One of the most unique and artistic artifacts found throughout the eastern United States is the engraved shell gorget. During late prehistoric and protohistoric times many of these gorgets were transported from the Southeast, where they were associated with the Mississippian Southeastern Ceremonial Complex, into Fort Ancient territory.
Engraved shell gorgets can be traced to their region of origin, indicating prehistoric trade networks that were in place throughout the eastern United States. In addition, the gorgets can serve as temporal markers to order late prehistoric and protohistoric Fort Ancient sites in time.
Shell gorgets are found mainly in a burial …

Concurrent Validity Of The Mattis Dementia Rating Scale, Kathryn L. Ingles
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Dementia Rating Scale (DRS) is a brief, comprehensive screening instrument for neurological impairment. The DRS has a low floor and enables progressive levels of dementia to be measured. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the concurrent validity of the DRS. Eighteen subjects from nursing homes and personal care homes diagnosed with mild to moderate Dementia of the Alzheimer’s Type were involved in the research. The score on the DRS was correlated with the raw scores on the Block Design and Vocabulary subtests of the WAIS-III. Research indicates that the performance on the Block Design subtest is a …
Modernization And Migration In Indonesia, I Wayan Mastriyana
Modernization And Migration In Indonesia, I Wayan Mastriyana
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This research is a step toward understanding the nature of the relationship between population movement and the level of modernization in Indonesia as that country continues with its development program all across the provinces. From the Intercensal Population Survey 1995, migration and seven modernization indicators of the 27 provinces were explored. The results of the findings indicated there was a correlation between modernization and migration although the outcomes vary from one variable to another. In combining those seven variables to one modernization variable, the relationship was weak but positive. The study shows the uniqueness of Indonesian migration because it is …

Occupational Titles And The Perception Of Gender, Cynthia A. Lokey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
First, this study examines the findings of Shinar’s (1975) study on the perception of gender in occupations in comparison to a current population. Second, the answers of a population of college students in WV were compared to their place of origin. Third, current neutral titles were compared to earlier gendered counterparts. Lastly, the answers of male and female respondents were analyzed.
Overall, occupational titles were found to be less gendered but retained their gender when compared to data collected by Shinar in 1975. Those respondents who were native to in WV were not found to be more stereotypical in their …

Business Technology: New Avenues For Sexual Harassment In The Workplace, Terri Stone Meadows
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Evaluations of scenarios describing workplace sexual harassment rendered through interpersonal versus technological means and rendered by a supervisor versus a co-worker were made by 178 college students (95 females and 83 males; M age = 23). The participants rated the seventeen sexual harassment scenarios using a three-point scale (1 = yes; 2 =no; 3 = unsure). For each scenario, participants rated whether the behavior in the scenario (1) was sexual harassment, (2) was inappropriate, but not necessarily sexual harassment, (3) would be a comfortable experience if the participant was a target of the behavior, and (4) was serious enough to …
Conduct Disorder Questionnaire, Dwayne L. Milam
Conduct Disorder Questionnaire, Dwayne L. Milam
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Conduct disorder is characterized by a pattern of rule violation in which the rights of those associated with the individual and society are violated. Frequently there are many problems at home, school, and within the community. Without early diagnosis and treatment these problems escalate. Many different techniques and assessment tools have been used to identify these individuals. Most rely on collateral informants, such as parents and teachers. Others are time consuming or not developed to specifically identify conduct disorder. The Conduct Disorder Questionnaire was developed by the author to address these issues. The questionnaire is a brief, easily scored self-report …
A Critical View Of Kai Erikson's Everything In Its Path: The Current State Of Appalachian Studies, Matthew Franklin Moore
A Critical View Of Kai Erikson's Everything In Its Path: The Current State Of Appalachian Studies, Matthew Franklin Moore
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis is a critical response to Kai Erikson’s depiction of Appalachian culture in his book, Everything In Its Path. I also survey associated writers such as Jack Weller and others. Erikson’s traditional “Culture of Poverty” model frames the research questions by “blaming the victim”. Everything In Its Path is written in a vacuum, without historical continuity. The questions that Erikson (following Welier) employs in his research methodology are poor cause and effect description in which Erikson blames the Appalachian culture for its societal differences. Erikson glosses over the social dynamics and socio-economic history of the Appalachian region. Furthermore, the …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study is a chi square analysis of the Supported Employment Survey (SES) and the Unsuccessful Placement Survey (UPS) developed for the purpose of this study. Subjects included 76 males and 35 females ranging from the ages of 19 to 64. All of the individuals included in this survey have been involved in supported employment programs throughout the state of West Virginia. Individuals were surveyed based on DSM-IV diagnosed disability (mental retardation verses mental illness), support networks during placement (living independently or with a family member), and previous experience in sheltered workshops prior to placement in support employment programs. Results …
Leisure And Delinquency: A Comparative Study Of The Link Between Leisure Activities And Delinquency, Patricia L. Brougham
Leisure And Delinquency: A Comparative Study Of The Link Between Leisure Activities And Delinquency, Patricia L. Brougham
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
For decades policymakers, among others, have assumed that involving juveniles in leisure/recreation somehow prevents them from engaging in misbehavior and/or leisure/recreation has rehabilitative value for delinquents. The belief seems to be that involvement in leisure/recreation changes juveniles so they will be less likely to engage in delinquent behavior in the future. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between delinquency and leisure/recreation by comparing samples of high school students with juveniles who were on probation for delinquent behavior.
There were three statistical comparisons made. First, statistical analyses were used to determine whether there were gender differences. …
