Anticipatory Socialization Of Pregnant Women: Learning Fetal Sex And Gendered Interactions, Medora W. Barnes
Anticipatory Socialization Of Pregnant Women: Learning Fetal Sex And Gendered Interactions, Medora W. Barnes
Sociology
Although doctors still frequently call out “It’s a girl!” when a baby girl is born, the majority of mothers now use ultrasound to find out the sex months earlier. This study examines how women who learn the sex of their fetus before birth are engaging in gendered verbal interactions throughout pregnancy. These include types of conversations, usage of gendered pronouns, and calling the unborn baby by a given name. These changes in behaviors by pregnant woman once fetal sex is known can be seen as a form of anticipatory socialization, as they begin to practice the behaviors and values associated …
An Examination Of Personal Humor Style And Humor Appreciation In Others, Steven Lacorte
An Examination Of Personal Humor Style And Humor Appreciation In Others, Steven Lacorte
Senior Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between individuals’ humor styles and their appreciation of various humor styles as presented by others. Eighty-five undergraduate John Carroll University students completed the Humor Styles Questionnaire and rated the funniness of six stand-up comedy routines, representing either aggressive, self-defeating, or affiliative humor styles with one male and one female comedian for each humor style. A mixed model Analysis of Variance revealed no relationship between humor style and humor appreciation. However, an examination of the effect of gender showed that men were more likely than women to endorse and appreciate aggressive …
Gender Differentiation In Paid And Unpaid Work During The Transition To Parenthood, Medora W. Barnes
Gender Differentiation In Paid And Unpaid Work During The Transition To Parenthood, Medora W. Barnes
Sociology
The transition to parenthood may be especially difficult because relationships need to be largely reorganized to meet demanding new challenges. For scholars interested in gender inequality, the transition to parenthood is a critical time in which gender differentiation is generated by both economic and cultural forces. Although newly married childless couples tend to share both paid and unpaid labor rather equally, when men and women become parents, their patterns become increasingly differentiated by gender. Cultural beliefs that emphasize mothers as the primary parent and fathers as secondary reinforce unequal patterns in housework and childcare. Time availability models, bargaining perspectives, and …
Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen

Sexual assault is a serious, traumatic incident that is all too common on college campuses. Following the ordeal, those who are assaulted are often blamed. Victim blame occurs when the victim, rather than the perpetrator of a crime, is held at least partially responsible for the crime. This study seeks to determine the values that lead to victim-blaming behavior. After responding to the Ambivalent Sexism Scale, Belief in a Just World Measure, Sexual Script Scale, and Updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, participants read a vignette depicting an encounter where an individual was not physically able to consent to a …

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which one’s blood glucose, more commonly known as sugar, rises to above average levels (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 2015). According to the 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report, in 2012, 29.1 million Americans age 20 and older have diabetes, up from 25.8 million in 2010, with 90-95% of those diagnosed cases being Type II diabetes (ADA, 2014). As of 2010, diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death in America (ADA, 2014). Several studies have found regular physical activity and maintaining a normal body mass index (BMI) can significantly reduce one’s risk of developing Type …
Decreasing Bystanders’ Negative Judgments Of Parents Of Children With Autism, Mary Lutter
Decreasing Bystanders’ Negative Judgments Of Parents Of Children With Autism, Mary Lutter
Senior Honors Projects
Although parents of children with autism often feel stigmatized or judged by bystanders in public situations, the present research attempted to translate these individual reports into empirical data. Ninety-nine students from the John Carroll University Psychology pool participated in this 2 x 2 between subjects design that manipulated whether an individual was informed or uninformed of a diagnosis of autism when observing a child with autism having a temper-tantrum. Then, all the participants rated the parent and child using The Parenting Scale: a measure of dysfunctional parenting in discipline situations and The Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory. Next, all the participants …

The Effect Of Message Framing And Gender On The Likelihood Of Donating Money To The John Carroll University 'Carroll Fund', John P. Fissinger
Senior Honors Projects
Message framing is a strategy many campaign marketers use to make their donating recruitment more effective, and there is a growing interest in research regarding their effectiveness (Buda & Zhang, 2000; Chang 2007; Chang & Lee, 2009, 2010; Das et al., 2008). Several different types of message framing have been investigated in prior research on charitable giving including positive versus negative message-framing and egotistic versus altruistic message-framing. Prior research on applying Kahneman and Tversky‘s Prospect Theory (1981) on positive and negative message framing to charitable donations has indicated negative message-framing is more effective than positive message-framing for securing donations (Chang …

Critical-Incident Trauma And Crime Scene Investigation: A Review Of Police Organizational Challenges And Interventions, Richard D. Clark, Catherine Distelrath, Gloria S. Vaquera, Daniel Winterich, Ernest Dezolt
Sociology
It is hypothesized that exposure to critical-incident trauma affects crime scene investigators. Individual and organizational attribution factors are analyzed through the use of self-report data collected from crime scene investigators working in a large Midwestern state. This paper analyzes key variables in the job of a crime scene investigator in an effort to determine the level of stress related to CSI work and the nature of organizational support available to the investigator. Although initial findings suggest a high level of satisfaction with the job, the nature of the job can lead to high levels of both professional and personal stress, …

Coaches Perspective: Changes In Swim Performance And Perceived Stress And Recovery In Female Collegiate Swimmers Across A Competitive Season, Jacquelyn Zera, James Mcmillan, Barry Munkasy, A. Joyner, Stephen Rossi
Exercise Science and Sports Studies
Optimal sport performance involves balancing the accumulation of training stress with adequate recovery (Budgett, 2000; Hollander & Meyers, 1995). Continuous evaluation of an athlete's performance levels, stress levels, and recovery states during a competitive season is important in determining an athlete's readiness for competition. This study's purpose was to examine effects of training load on performance, perceived stress, and recovery among collegiate female athletes across a competitive season. Nineteen NCAA Division I female swimmers completed monthly testing including six tethered swim tests and seven Recovery-Stress Questionnaires (RESTQ-76), yielding mean force (Fmean) and Total Recovery-Stress Score (TRSS). This study's results indicate …

Continuous evaluation of an athlete's performance levels, stress levels, and recovery states during a competitive season is important in determining an athlete's readiness for competition.
