The Office Of Attorney General In New Mexico, James Michael Mcadams
The Office Of Attorney General In New Mexico, James Michael Mcadams
Political Science ETDs
The office of Attorney General in New Mexico is a very powerful office but also a very restricted one. This study examines the various roles available to the Attorney general and the degree to which they are compatible or in conflict. The interplay of these roles is viewed as the basis for the influence exercised by the office and also the difficulties which it encounters. The history of the office offers some insight into its present operation. The territorial Period from 1848 50 1912 was characterized by active competition for the office and by numerous attempts to make it a …
Andrew Johnson And The Patronage, James Lewis Baumgardner
Andrew Johnson And The Patronage, James Lewis Baumgardner
Doctoral Dissertations
The Constitution bestows upon the president the right to make appointments "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate" to federal position at home and abroad. Over the passage of time, through free use of this power and the implied power of removal, the several chief executives constructed a vast patronage system, of which one primary goal was to reward the party faithful for their services. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine how well Andrew Johnson, the unexpected successor of Abraham Lincoln, used the seemingly powerful patronage weapon and the reasons why he used it as …
Sex Differences In Associative Structure, Riley F. Elder Jr.
Sex Differences In Associative Structure, Riley F. Elder Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
First, the history of the concept of associative structure was traced, and various methods of its assessment were reviewed. Included, also, was a survey of word association literature, with emphasis on the most recent studies. Three separate studies followed which were diverse techniques for the assessment of sex differences in associative structure, plus suggestions of some possible reasons--both proximate and remote--for these differences.
The first procedure consisted of an investigation of the Jenkins and Palermo Word Association Norms with respect to sexually distinct responses. This revealed many significantly differing responses, and suggested that the differences were the result of a …

Structure Of The Kogi Verb Auxiliary And Its Distribution In Discourse, Chadwick M. Stendal
Structure Of The Kogi Verb Auxiliary And Its Distribution In Discourse, Chadwick M. Stendal
Theses and Dissertations
Certain frequent long words in the Kogi (Aruakan) language of Colombia, South America, were regularly translated by the first linguists who worked in the area as meaning 'and so' or 'afterwards', in spite of the fact that the words were highly variable, and complicated in structure.
When the author and his wife began working on the language, the only additional clue available to them was the information, from one of the previous scholars, that one syllable in the words marked indicative mood.
Prom this point on intensive scrutiny was made of text recorded by the author and transcribed from his …

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The American Electoral College, Norma N. Williams
An Analysis And Evaluation Of The American Electoral College, Norma N. Williams
Dissertations and Theses
The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was greatly divided over the question of how to select the new nation's chief executive. The method finally adopted was a compromise between direct election and election by the national legislature and provided that individual states, as they saw fit, choose electors equal to the total number of Senators and Representatives. From the beginning, most of delegates considered the proposal awkward and irrational almost to the point of absurdity, but as they argued about it, they became convinced that it was then the only plan which could overcome the objections raised by other methods.

On The Season, Marty Mcdonald
On The Season, Marty Mcdonald
Honors Theses
In a recent report to a subcommittee of the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare of the United States Senate, Father John A. Wagner made an apt comparison of Texas migrant workers and "tumble weeds that roll helter-skelter,... in search of that constantly eluding hope that they will have a chance to make enough to keep their families alive." Much of the migrant farm labor in the United States make their winter quarters in sunny Florida. By May they are moving out to follow crops and get "on the season." They travel to South Carolina, and on up to New …

The Effect Of Tonal Proximity Upon The Memory Of A Set Of Tones, William M. Walters Jr.
The Effect Of Tonal Proximity Upon The Memory Of A Set Of Tones, William M. Walters Jr.
Masters Theses
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of music to which people respond. Ortmann's finding that the songs of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and R. Strauss are characterized by more frequent use of smaller intervals implies that small intervals are more typical in western music.
In Experiment I random sets of notes were played by the experimenter on a toy xylophone, and the subject was asked to reproduce the set on an identical instrument. The results were that subjects were generally capable of finding the correct notes, but this ability declined as the size of the set …
Assimilation In Exile: A Study Of Cuban Refugee University Students, Jo Ann Major
Assimilation In Exile: A Study Of Cuban Refugee University Students, Jo Ann Major
Sociology ETDs
Although the history and settlement of European immigrants in the United States has been well documented and commented upon, there is a paucity of data on the absorption of Latin populations to American life and little systematic investigation of the immigration-assimilation process in general. The influx of Cuban refugees into the United States since Castro’s revolution provides an opportunity to study the adaptation of Latin American immigrants to American society. This study investigates differences in degree of assimilation to American society among thirty-one Cuban refugee students at the University of New Mexico and the University of Albuquerque, who left Cuba …
The Thomistic Influence In Colombian Political Ideology, Jimmie Michael Dodson
The Thomistic Influence In Colombian Political Ideology, Jimmie Michael Dodson
Political Science ETDs
This thesis examines Colombian political ideology, as expressed through a body of political literature, in an effort to ascertain the presence of a Thomistic-Neo-Thomistic influence. That Thomistic influence is considered, for the purposes of this paper, to have a conservative effect on the political ideology of the nation.
This objective is undertaken first by the establishment of a model of Thomistic-Neo-Thomistic thought. The model draws together and explicates the basic elements of a medieval Catholic world view with respect to persistent political issues. It is hypothesized that this theoretical framework will be evident in the rhetoric and orientation of the …
Operant Conditioning Of Heart Rate Changes In Curarized Rats With Brain Stimulation Reinforcement, David Hothersall
Operant Conditioning Of Heart Rate Changes In Curarized Rats With Brain Stimulation Reinforcement, David Hothersall
Doctoral Dissertations
Many learning theorists have distinguished between autonomic responses which can be conditioned using classical conditioning procedures, and skeletal responses which can be conditioned using operant or instrumental conditioning procedures. In recent years this distinction has been challenged since such autonomic responses as changes in heart rate, GSRs, vasoconstriction and vasodilation, and changes in blood pressure have all been conditioned as operants.
The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that both increases and decreases in heart rate could be conditioned in groups of curarized rats using an operant conditioning procedure with brain stimulation as the reinforcement for the …
The 1966 Republican Campaign In North Dakota, Joseph Charles Crawford
The 1966 Republican Campaign In North Dakota, Joseph Charles Crawford
Theses and Dissertations
The 1966 Republican Campaign in North Dakota discusses the efforts of the Party from May, 1965 through November, 1966. The pre-convention period illustrates the effort of the North Dakota Republicans to rebuild their organization after the 1964 defeat. Analysis of this effort is made with regard to finances, organization, and research.
The study then discusses the 1966 state convention, the rise of youth in the Party organization, background and insight into all the races, and a complete tabulation of all ballots. Special emphasis is placed on the problem of the John Birch Society and on how that problem was resolved …
Concept Identification As A Function Of Three Semantic Dimensions, Richard Eugene Edwards
Concept Identification As A Function Of Three Semantic Dimensions, Richard Eugene Edwards
All Master's Theses
It is the purpose of the present study to determine the differential effects of the three primary semantic dimensions on the ability of Ss to solve a concept identification problem. It was hypothesized that the performance level, as measured by a criterion of learning ten successive responses containing no more than one error, time to completion, and the total number of errors, will be higher for Ss working on the evaluative dimension than for Ss working on the potency or activity dimensions. Two additional hypotheses were formulated in an attempt to answer the following questions: 1) Is the ability to …
