There is now and may always be a difference of opinion on the advisability of contact sports for the younger and usually more immature boys. It is said by some that the many and varied experiences and attitudes gained through early participation in team contact sports greatly over-balances any detrimental effects which might occur. The other point of view expresses the opinion that anything which is gained at this younger age can and will be better accepted. when there is less chance or physical, mental, and social strain or damage.

This study will trace the history and development of a new idea in recreation, that of the Junior Sportsmen’s Club. This program was first worked out by the writer ar Lodi, California, while he was employed by the Lodi Recreation Department, and has in a few short years spread throughout the United States. The writer feels the inasmuch as the project has been an actual field experiment, his study should be of value to other communities or to other leaders in recreation. This provides the reason as well as the justification for this study.

Every person who either participates in or witnesses an athletic activity acquires an interest in the definitions of the terms that have specific meaning in relation to that activity. In seeking definitions, the layman, the student, or the instructor naturally desires the simplest, most do noise, and the best understood definition at his disposal. It is with this idea in mind that I have endeavored to cover twelve sports.
