Revival Of Downtown Providence, Chester Smolski
Revival Of Downtown Providence, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"Finally, on September 29, more than two years after the initial correspondence and subsequent competition, design, debate, public hearings and more public hearings, the proposal for the Kennedy Plaza auto restricted zone (ARZ) was passed by the Providence City Council. This necessary approval cleared the last barrier before the September 30 deadline of the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) so that Providence may be considered for nearly $5 million of federal funds to implement this project."
The Effects Of A Political Boundary Running Through A Metropolitan Area: A Case Study Of The Establishment And Functioning Of The Jantzen Beach Shopping Center, Rose Romaine Reed
The Effects Of A Political Boundary Running Through A Metropolitan Area: A Case Study Of The Establishment And Functioning Of The Jantzen Beach Shopping Center, Rose Romaine Reed
Dissertations and Theses
Jantzen Beach Shopping Center is an anomaly on the landscape challenging traditional criteria for the location of regional shopping centers. Located on Hayden Island on the Oregon side of the border, it has access from only one exit in each direction off the Interstate 5 freeway. The predominantly industrial and recreational land use of the region within a five minute travel time from the shopping center results in an exceptionally small adjacent residential population. Its potential trade area is further limited by the intervening shopping opportunity for Washington residents afforded by the Vancouver central business district which lies adjacent to …
City Land Bank Would Promote Industrial Development, Chester Smolski
City Land Bank Would Promote Industrial Development, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"On the 19th of May, in the city of Providence, 200 properties were offered for sale to the public. These were properties on which owners were in default of taxes and which the city hoped to sell in order to get them back on the tax rolls, as well as to collect back taxes. Only 21 of the properties were sold."
A New Park To Give The Downtown A Lift, Chester Smolski
A New Park To Give The Downtown A Lift, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
The recent discussions on the proposal for an auto-restricted zone in Kennedy Plaza have centered essentially on one idea: should this area continue to be used for cars and parking space or should it be turned over to pedestrians, with limited auto access, increased bus usage, and fewer parking spaces?
Don't Be Too Quick To Dismiss Pedestrianized Malls, Chester Smolski
Don't Be Too Quick To Dismiss Pedestrianized Malls, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"The recent proposal to close off parts of the Kennedy Plaza and Dorrance Street to automobile traffic and transform autoways to pedestrian use has raised an important question: What would be the impact on downtown stores if this proposed auto resticted zone (ARZ) were implemented?
Providence Needs More Than Parking Space, Chester Smolski
Providence Needs More Than Parking Space, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"The automobile has made us highly mobile. Today we think nothing of driving 30, 40 or 50 miles to do different kinds of shopping. The success of suburban malls attests to this fact: with good access from interstate and highways, these asphalt oases have sprung up like mushrooms throughout our suburban areas. And with few exceptions, they have successfully fulfilled the single function for which they were intended--retailing.

Economic Impacts Summary : Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project, Edward C. Jordan Co. Inc, United States Army Corps Of Engineers, New England Division
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project
Objective of this study will be to assess Dickey-Lincoln in terms of its attainment of project objectives. How will this be done? The Water Resources Council in "Water and Related Land Resources -Establishment of Principles and Standards for Planning"' states that: The overall purpose of water and land resource planning is to promote the quality of life, by reflecting society's preferences for attainment of the objectives...

A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima
A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Modern and ancient environments associated with Lakes Algoma and Huron were studied according to attributes of stratigraphy, sediment texture, parameters, sediment size distribution, bedforms, and primary sedimentary structures. Results from a computation of wave refraction diagrams and from an examination of the wave climate characteristics indicate that the modern embayment is low energy.
A sediment texture comparison between modern and ancient environments indicates that higher energy pervailed in the ancient environment relative to the present day environment. The cobble and gravel sediments as well as an extensive belt of foredunes preserved in the ancient environment are evidence of this high …
Netarts Bay, Oregon: An Assessment Of Human Impact On An Estuarine System, Larry D. Mccallum
Netarts Bay, Oregon: An Assessment Of Human Impact On An Estuarine System, Larry D. Mccallum
Dissertations and Theses
Problems associated with planning the future use of estuarine areas stem from:
- A lack of knowledge on the critical aspects of the system.
- Inability to predict the future changes which will occur within the system in order to effectively manage the resource base.
These difficulties lie in the fact that changes within the system occur because of both "natural" and "cultural" conditions. The thesis hypothesis and subsequent research is to describe the physical changes that have occurred within the Netarts system, primarily due to man's impact.
Types of data gathered for the analysis includes that on historical and current land …
