Data on U.S. Census Bureau CD-ROM Test Disc 2 is accessible using dBASE III PlusĀ®. Different computer hardware configurations are used to determine the most efficient method of manipulating the data. Various software options for accessing Census CD-ROMs are also mentioned. Using the same dBASE commands with each system, comparisons are made between 8088 and 80386 configurations. The 80386 is found to be essential to the efficient searching of large census files. Libraries will need to invest in advanced computing capabilities and staff training to respond to the GPO's commitment to CD-ROM technology.
