Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines a series of controversies in Portland, Oregon during the 1950s triggered by the placement of modem art in strategic public locations. This study examines the controversy surrounding the installation of Louis Bunce's mural at the Portland International Airport and the series of modern art controversies that followed the mural incident.

At 4 p.m. every Wednesday, a group gathers to develop methods in which it can promote exactly what its namesake implies: Peace. The Maine Peace Action Committee was founded in 1974, with a focus on working to end the war in Indochina. Today, the group extends its efforts to all who seek an end to violence and inequality.

A study was undertaken of the effectiveness of incorporating e-mail contact and access to the world wide web within a graduate subject. Students were surveyed at the commencement of the subject to determine their access to and perceived competence in using computers, and at the end of the subject to elicit their views of the effectiveness of the subject materials. Strategies identified to improve student access and use of electronic media, included: very basic, hands-on tutorials; availability of and access to computers; incorporating use of electronic media into assessments; and availability of technical support.
