We find that ferromagnetism can be induced in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by introducing hydrogen. Multiwalled CNTs grown inside porous alumina templates contain a large density of defects resulting in significant hydrogen uptake when annealed at high temperatures. This hydrogen incorporation produces H-complex and adatom magnetism which generates a sizable ferromagnetic moment and a Curie temperature near TC=1000 K. We studied the conditions for the incorporation of hydrogen, the temperature-dependent magnetic behavior, and the dependence of the ferromagnetism on the size of the nanotubes.

The self-assembly of helical ribbons is examined in a variety of multicomponent enantiomerically pure systems that contain a bile salt or a nonionic detergent, a phosphatidylcholine or a fatty acid, and a steroid analog of cholesterol. In almost all systems, two different pitch types of helical ribbons are observed: high pitch, with a pitch angle of 54 ± 2°, and low pitch, with a pitch angle of 11 ± 2°. Although the majority of these helices are right-handed, a small proportion of left-handed helices is observed. Additionally, a third type of helical ribbon, with a pitch angle in the range …

This article reports viscosity data on a series of colloidal dispersions collected as part of the International Nanofluid Property Benchmark Exercise (INPBE). Data are reported for seven different fluids that include dispersions of metal-oxide nanoparticles in water, and in synthetic oil. These fluids, which are also referred to as nanofluids, are currently being researched for their potential to function as heat transfer fluids. In a recently published paper from the INPBE study, thermal conductivity data from more than 30 laboratories around the world were reported and analyzed. Here, we examine the influence of particle shape and concentration on the viscosity …

Light trapping is a promising approach, e.g., by scattering the incident light to oblique angle to increase the dwell time of the light inside the devices, to improve light absorption in the active layer in organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, the absorption enhancement in OSCs is realized using a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/indium-tin-oxide (ITO) grating electrode. Photovoltaic properties such as external quantum efficiency and power conversion efficiency of a set of structural identical OSCs made with a planar ITO anode (control device) and a PMMA/ITO grating electrode were analyzed. The grating incorporated OSCs resulted in a ~10% increase in …

The BYU-Idaho Physics Department x-band microwave optics equipment was originally intended for use in classroom demonstrations. I evaluated this equipment for use in research. I designed and built additional equipment needed in order to perform attenuation and other experiments then used it to conduct research on the transmission properties of paper and other substances. The new equipment allowed me to create a standard experimental procedure, take reasonably accurate measurements, and reduce undesired standing wave effects. Mathematical and experimental analysis was done to determine the necessary parameters of the new equipment. The new apparatus is comparable to setups featured in published …

Interactive Learningware For Physics Vol. 1: Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Waves, James Tanner, Gary Lewis
Gary C. Lewis
Retaining the comprehensiveness and rigor of the previous edition, this sequel has been dramatically revised to be more student oriented. Definitions and issues have been improved, making them tighter and more easily understood. More than 400 sample problems have been updated and expanded to reinforce physics concepts. Formulas involving elements of calculus are better explained due to additional subsections. A wealth of animated illustrations and full-color photographs will capture today's visually-oriented students' attention.

Structural, Optical And Electrical Properties Of Europium Picrate Tetraethylene Glycol Complex As Emissive Material For Oled, Wan Haliza Abd Majid

A new europium complex [Eu(Pic) 2(H 2O)(EO4)](Pic) ·0.75H 2O was synthesized and used as the emission material for the single layer device structure of ITO/EO4EuPic/Al, using a spin-coating technique. Study on the optical properties of the [Eu(Pic) 2(H 2O)(EO4)](Pic)·0.75H 2O complex where EO4=tetraethylene glycol and Pic=picrate anion, had to be undertaken before being applicable to the study of an organic light emitting diode (OLED). The electrical property of an OLED using currentvoltage (IV) measurement was also studied. In complex, the Eu(III) ion was coordinated with the EO4 ligand as a pentadentate mode, one water molecule, and with two Pic anions …

Synthesis, Magnetic Properties And X-Ray Analysis Of Zn0.97x0.03o Nanoparticles (X = Mn, Ni, And Co) Using Scherrer And Size-Strain Plot Methods, Wan Haliza Abd Majid
Wan Haliza binti Abd Majid
Un-doped and doped ZnO nanoparticles (Zn0.97X0.03O-NPs, X = Mn, Co, and Ni) were synthesized from a metal acetate precursor and acetic acid by a modified sol gel combustion method. The compounds were synthesized at calcination temperatures of 650 degrees C for 1 h. The synthesized un-doped/doped ZnO-NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and high-magnification transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD results revealed that the sample product was crystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite phase. The TEM showed ZnO-NPs nearly spherical shapes and a non-uniform shape for doped ZnO-NPs. The crystalline development in the ZnO-NPs was investigated by X-ray peak …

Angular-Dependences Of Giant In-Plane And Interlayer Magnetoresistances In Bi2te3 Bulk Single Crystals, Zengji Yue
Zengji Yue
Angular-dependences of in-plane and interlayer magnetotransport properties in n-type Bi2Te3 bulk single crystals have been investigated over a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields. Giant in-plane magnetoresistances (MR) of up to 500% and interlayer MR of up to 200% were observed, respectively. The observed MR exhibits quadratic field dependences in low fields and linear field dependences in high fields. The angular dependences of the MR represent strong anisotropy and twofold oscillations. The observed angle-dependent, giant MR might result from the strong coulomb scattering of electrons as well as impurity scattering in the bulk conduction bands of n-type Bi2Te3. The …
