Semiclassical Backreaction On Asymptotically Anti–De Sitter Black Holes, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen Jan 2021

Semiclassical Backreaction On Asymptotically Anti–De Sitter Black Holes, Peter Taylor, Cormac Breen

Articles

We consider a quantum scalar field on the classical background of an asymptotically anti–de Sitter black hole and the backreaction the field’s stress-energy tensor induces on the black hole geometry. The backreaction is computed by solving the reduced-order semiclassical Einstein field equations sourced by simple analytical approximations for the renormalized expectation value of the scalar field stress-energy tensor. When the field is massless and conformally coupled, we adopt Page’s approximation to the renormalized stress-energy tensor, while for massive fields we adopt a modified version of the DeWitt-Schwinger approximation. The latter approximation must be modified so that it possesses the correct …

Mode-Sum Prescription For Vacuum Polarization In Black Hole Spacetimes In Even Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Doran Nov 2017

Mode-Sum Prescription For Vacuum Polarization In Black Hole Spacetimes In Even Dimensions, Peter Taylor, Cormac Doran

Articles

We present a mode-sum regularization prescription for computing the vacuum polarization of a scalar field in static spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in even dimensions. This is the first general and systematic approach to regularized vacuum polarization in higher even dimensions, building upon a previous scheme we developed for odd dimensions. Things are more complicated here since the even-dimensional propagator possesses logarithmic singularities which must be regularized. However, in spite of this complication, the regularization parameters can be computed in closed form in arbitrary even dimensions and for arbitrary metric function f(r). As an explicit example of our method, we …

Vacuum Polarization On The Brane, Cormac Breen, Matthew Hewitt,, Elizabeth Winstanley, Adrian Ottewill Jan 2015

Vacuum Polarization On The Brane, Cormac Breen, Matthew Hewitt,, Elizabeth Winstanley, Adrian Ottewill

Articles

We compute the renormalized expectation value of the square of a massless, conformally coupled, quantum scalar field on the brane of a higher-dimensional black hole. Working in the AADD braneworld scenario, the extra dimensions are flat and we assume that the compactification radius is large compared with the size of the black hole. The four-dimensional on-brane metric corresponds to a slice through a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole geometry and depends on the number of bulk space-time dimensions. The quantum scalar field is in a thermal state at the Hawking temperature. An exact, closed-form expression is derived for the renormalized expectation …

Enhanced Quantum Dot Emission For Luminescent Solar Concentrators Using Plasmonic Interaction, Subhash Chandra, Manus Kennedy, John Doran, Sarah Mccormack, A. J. Chatten

Articles

Plasmonic excitation enhanced fluorescence of CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) in the presence of Au nanoparticles (NPs) has been studied for application in quantum dot solar concentrator (QDSC) devices. We observe that there is an optimal concentration of Au NPs that gives a maximum 53% fluorescence emission enhancement for the particular QD/Au NP composite studied. The optimal concentration depends on the coupling and spacing between neighboring QDs and Au NPs. We show the continuous transition from fluorescence enhancement to quenching, depending on Au NP concentration. The locally enhanced electromagnetic field induced by the surface plasmon resonance in the Au NPs …

Solutions To Quasi-Relativistic Multi-Configurative Hartree-Fock Equations In Quantum Chemistry, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard Sep 2011

Solutions To Quasi-Relativistic Multi-Configurative Hartree-Fock Equations In Quantum Chemistry, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard

Articles

We establish existence of infinitely many distinct solutions to the multi-configurative Hartree-Fock type equations for N-electron Coulomb systems with quasi-relativistic kinetic energy for the n th electron. Finitely many of the solutions are interpreted as excited states of the molecule. Moreover, we prove existence of a ground state. The results are valid under the hypotheses that the total charge Z of K nuclei is greater than N-1 and that Z is smaller than a critical charge. The proofs are based on a new application of the Lions-Fang-Ghoussoub critical point approach to nonminimal solutions on a complete analytic Hilbert-Riemann manifold.

Fluorescence Emission Study Of Cdse/Zns Quantum Dot And Au Nanoparticles Composite For Application In Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators, Subhash Chandra, John Doran, Manus Kennedy, S Mccormack, A Chatten

Conference Papers

Fluorescence of core shell (CdSe/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) and Au nanoparticles (NPs) composite has been studied for application in quantum dot solar concentrators (QDSC). We conclude two points from the particular QD/Au NP composite studied. One; for the particular Au NPs concentration, the relative fluorescence emission enhancement increases with decreasing QD concentration. Second; the enhancement is more pronounced for the Au nanoparticles whose surface plasmon resonance wavelength overlaps with the absorption peak of QDs. The fundamental concept that could describe the change in fluorescence emission of QDs in the presence of Au NPs is the locally enhanced electromagnetic field induced …

The Development Of A Quantum Dot Solar Concentrator, Brenda Rowan Sep 2007

The Development Of A Quantum Dot Solar Concentrator, Brenda Rowan

Doctoral

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators (QDSCs). Quantum Dots offer the advantages of having broad absorption specr4a, tunable emission and improved stability. A range of Cadmium Selenide/|Zince Sulphide Quantum Dots were characterized in solution and composite form using time-resolved and steady state spectroscopie techniques and the stability of the composite samples was investigated over a 6 month period. A number of matrix materials were compared and the most suitable type for fabrication of QDSCs were identified. Techniques for fabrication and characterization of QDSCs were developed and a range of different QDSC …

Some Irrational Generalised Moonshine From Orbifolds, Rossen Ivanov, Michael Tuite

Articles

We verify the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for some irrational modular functions for theMonster centralisers related to the Harada-Norton, Held, M12 and L3(3) simple groups based on certain orbifolding constraints. We find explicitly the fixing groups of the hauptmoduls arising in each case.

Rational Generalized Moonshine From Abelian Orbifoldings Of The Moonshine Module, Rossen Ivanov, Michael Tuite

Articles

We consider orbifoldings of the Moonshine Module with respect to the abelian group generated by a pair of commuting Monster group elements with one of prime order p = 2, 3, 5, 7 and the other of order pk for k = 1 or k prime. We show that constraints arising from meromorphic orbifold conformal field theory allow us to demonstrate that each orbifold partition function with rational coefficients is either constant or is a hauptmodul for an explicitly found modular fixing group of genus zero. We thus confirm in the cases considered the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for all rational …
