Martin Gardner's fondness for the characters and themes of Lewis Carroll's "Alice" is well-known and to honor Gardner we offer two word puzzles to be played on the 12-node diagram of the WHITE RABBIT.

Kate is also an accomplished recreational mathematician and poet. To try to match in a small way her creative ability, we offer three puzzle-games in her honor: O'BEIRNE's TRI-HEX, PAPPUS and "KATe JONES". These three are specific examples of (9,3) symmetric configurations. More generally an (n,r) configuration is a collection of n "points"and n "lines" subject to the following requirements:
Rl: Any two points belong to at most one line.
R2: Each line has r points, and each point belongs to r lines.

This puzzle is a continuation of the tribute to the magician Paul Swinford. The following 18 two-letter words use each of the 12 letters of PAUL SWINFORD exactly three times each. The words are to be placed on the nodes of the grid so that each hexagon and each of the three diagonals contain the 12 letters of our honoree's name.

There are exactly 12 different letters in the phrase GATHERING FOR MARTIN GARDNER. We use each of the 12 letters three times each in 18 different two-letter words that are to be placed on the nodes of the graph so adjoining nodes have a letter in common.

An Injection From Standard Fillings To Parking Functions, Elizabeth Niese
An Injection From Standard Fillings To Parking Functions, Elizabeth Niese
Elizabeth Niese
The Hilbert series of the Garsia-Haiman module can be written as a generating function of standard fillings of Ferrers diagrams. It is conjectured by Haglund and Loehr that the Hilbert series of the diagonal harmonics can be written as a generating function of parking functions. In this paper we present a weight-preserving injection from standard fillings to parking functions for certain cases.

Mathematical Reasoning: Writing And Proof, Ted Sundstrom
Ted Sundstrom, Professor of Mathematics
Mathematical Reasoning: Writing and Proof is designed to be a text for the first course in the college mathematics curriculum that introduces students to the processes of constructing and writing proofs and focuses on the formal development of mathematics. The primary goals of the text are to help students: • Develop logical thinking skills and to develop the ability to think more abstractly in a proof oriented setting. • Develop the ability to construct and write mathematical proofs using standard methods of mathematical proof including direct proofs, proof by contradiction, mathematical induction, case analysis, and counterexamples. • Develop the ability …
Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From The Thermogravimetric Data Set Of Biomass Samples, Karol Postawa, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From The Thermogravimetric Data Set Of Biomass Samples, Karol Postawa, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article describes methods of the determination of kinetic parameters from the thermogravimetric data set of biomass samples. It presents the methodology of the research, description of the needed equipment, and the method of analysis of thermogravimetric data. It describes both methodology of obtaining quantitative data such as kinetic parameters as well as of obtaining qualitative data like the composition of biomass. The study is focused mainly on plant biomass because it is easy in harvesting and preparation. Methodology is shown on the sample containing corn stover which is subsequently pyrolysed. The investigated sample show the kinetic of first order …

Multilevel And Multidimensional Hadamard Matrices, Sarah Adams, Matthew Crawford, Caitlin Greeley, Bryce Lee, Mathav Murugan
Sarah Spence Adams
Multilevel Hadamard matrices (MHMs), whose entries are integers as opposed to the traditional restriction to {±1}, were introduced by Trinh, Fan, and Gabidulin in 2006 as a way to construct multilevel zero-correlation zone sequences, which have been studied for use in approximately synchronized code division multiple access systems. We answer the open question concerning the maximum number of distinct elements permissible in an order n MHM by proving the existence of an order n MHM with n elements of distinct absolute value for all n. We also define multidimensional MHMs and prove an analogous existence result.

On The Hole Index Of L(2,1)-Labelings Of R-Regular Graphs, Sarah Adams, Matthew Tesch, Denise Troxell, Bradford Westgate, Cody Wheeland

An L(2,1)-labeling of a graph G is an assignment of nonnegative integers to the vertices of G so that adjacent vertices get labels at least distance two apart and vertices at distance two get distinct labels. A hole is an unused integer within the range of integers used by the labeling. The lambda number of a graphG, denoted λ(G), is the minimum span taken over all L(2,1)-labelings of G. The hole index of a graph G, denoted ρ(G), is the minimum number of holes taken over all L(2,1)-labelings with span exactly λ(G). Georges and Mauro [On the structure of graphs …
