In recent years, metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) have risen quickly to prominence as promising materials across a variety of fields, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics in general. We show here a facile solution growth for creating a variety of mixed halide MAPbBr3-xIx crystals, which we will use to study halide exchange and transport in halide perovskites. We generated a calibration curve between the optical response and chemical composition in mixed Br/I MHPs at room temperature. All mixed Br/I MHP crystals were subjected to measurements of photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy. A subset of mixed-halide MHP crystals exhibited multiple emission …

Senior Honors Theses
Since 2000, when the Nobel Prize in Chemistry as awarded for conductive polymer research few studies have been performed concerning the conductive capabilities of discrete organometallic compounds. For this project, organometallic compounds were formed specifically with a transition metal included in the structure. Through oxidation and reduction reactions, the variation in the electrical conductivity could allow for an analysis of whether this unique structure would allow for tunability. The goal of this research was to begin with aromatic substituted fulvenes and perform various multistep synthesis processes, utilizing thallium salt intermediates, to produce several disubstituted cyclopentadienyl rhenium complexes. In this project, …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Terbium(Iii) Complexes: Can We Manipulate The Emission Signature?, Ryan Gagnon
Synthesis And Characterization Of Terbium(Iii) Complexes: Can We Manipulate The Emission Signature?, Ryan Gagnon
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Successful Lewis acid/base reactions of terbium(III) nitrate with 2,2’-bipyrdine (22’bpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), and 2,6-pyridine dimethanol (pydm) have yielded the products: Tb(22’bpy)2(NO3)3, Tb(phen)2(NO3)3, and [Tb(pydm)3](NO3)3, respectively. In accord with the well-known antenna-effect, the absorption spectrum of each complex is similar to the spectrum of the free ligand, while the emission spectrum of the complex is identical for the free terbium(III) ion. In contrast, the substitution of a ligand containing a third-row nonmetal strategically placed near the terbium may force interaction between the 3p nonmetal …

Synthesis Of A Novel Terbium(Iii) Complex For Application In Metal Nanoparticle Surface Modification, Lauralee E. Hurst, Davon Ferrara, Justin Stace
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Lanthanide ions, such as terbium(III), exhibit bright luminescence when bound to organic ligands which strongly absorb light. This property has been used in creating chemical sensors or luminescent tags for microscopy. Complexes centered with terbium(III) exhibit a yellow-green luminescence upon excitation by shortwave ultraviolet light. In this work, a bifunctional ligand, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4mba), was chosen to selectively coordinate terbium(III) to the oxygens of the acid functional group, leaving the thiol group available for another compound. Thiol groups are effectively used in surface coordination to noble metal nanoparticles (NP). In efforts to create a novel 4mba-terbium(III)-NP system, a one pot …

Conspectus The quality of technological materials generally improves as the crystallographic order is increased. This is particularly true in semiconductor materials, as evidenced by the huge impact that bulk single crystals of silicon have had on electronics. Another approach to producing highly ordered materials is the epitaxial growth of crystals on a single-crystal surface that determines their orientation. Epitaxy can be used to produce films and nanostructures of materials with a level of perfection that approaches that of single crystals. It may be used to produce materials that cannot be grown as large single crystals due to either economic or …

We report a mechanistic investigation of calcium bistriflimide-mediated sulfur(VI)–fluoride exchange (SuFEx) between sulfonyl fluorides and amines. We determine the likely pre-activation resting state─a calcium bistriflimide complex with ligated amines─thus allowing for corroborated calculation of the SuFEx activation barrier at ∼21 kcal/mol, compared to 21.5 ± 0.14 kcal/mol derived via kinetics experiments. Transition state analysis revealed: (1) a two-point calcium-substrate contact that activates the sulfur(VI) center and stabilizes the leaving fluoride and (2) a 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane additive that provides Brønsted-base activation of the nucleophilic amine. Stable Ca–F complexes upon sulfonamide formation are likely contributors to inhibited catalytic turnover, and a proof-of-principle redesign …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Student Projects
In this thesis, I will be presenting various preventive approaches to combat type-II diabetes. The focus of this paper will be comparing and contrasting therapeutic drug targets such as Metformin and Sulfonylureas that are prescribed for type-II diabetic patients versus taking preventative steps such as making lifestyle changes including weight management, physical activity, and having a balanced diet that prevents onset of type-II diabetes or helps patients manage type-II diabetes. From this paper, one will gain insight on how there are multiple approaches to combat type-II diabetes that are not in the form of the pill.

Landfills contain a trove of valuable materials, such as critical, precious, and rare earth metals, that are integral to the United State’s economy and national security. The leachate that filters through landfills picks up these materials, which allows for the possibility of recovery. For this research, samples will be analyzed from landfills throughout the Midwestern United States to provide a baseline on water quality constituents, elements present, and microbial activity. Preliminary data for this study was acquired by analyzing samples of landfill leachate from a landfill in northern Indiana. pH readings indicate that the leachate is slightly basic. It also …

Ligands For Complexation, Extraction, And Sensing Of Mercury(Ii) For Application To High-Level Waste (Hlw) At The Savannah River Site (Srs), Adenike O. Fasiku
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mercury (Hg) separation and sensing is of high significance due to Hg(II) environmental mobility and toxicity. Furthermore, the use of Hg in nuclear applications has resulted in its accumulation in several DOE sites, such as in Oak Ridge and Savannah River reservations. Organic mercury species have been found in low activity waste (LAW) streams resulting from high-level waste (HLW) processing at the Savannah River Site (SRS), therefore posing a threat to humans and the environment. Mercury, being a soft Lewis acid, has a strong affinity for softer Lewis bases, such as S- or N-donor ligands. Therefore, we focus on …

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Metal ions play important roles in various biological systems. Molecular dynamics (MD) using classical force field has become a popular research tool to study biological systems at the atomic level. However, meaningful MD simulations require reliable models and parameters. Previously we showed that the 12-6 Lennard-Jones nonbonded model for ions could not reproduce the experimental hydration free energy (HFE) and ion-oxygen distance (IOD) values simultaneously when ion has a charge of +2 or higher. We discussed that this deficiency arises from the overlook of the ion-induced dipole interaction in the 12-6 model, and this term is proportional to 1/r …

Numerous transition metal catalysts have been designed as biomimetic model compounds for the active site of metalloenzymes found throughout Nature, most notably cytochrome P450 monooxygenases that carry out the oxidative transformations of organic substrates with near-perfect chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selectivity. The primary active oxidants in catalytic and enzymatic cycles are fleeting high-valent metal-oxo intermediates where the oxo ligand can transfer to an organic substrate in a process known as oxygen atom transfer (OAT).
In the present work, porphyrin-manganese(III), salen-chromium(III), and salenmanganese( III) derivatives were successfully synthesized and spectroscopically characterized using 1H NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. A facile photochemical approach was …

In this work, ruthenium, iron, and manganese light-harvesting metalloporphyrins have been successfully synthesized to serve as biomimetic models of the active site of Cytochrome P450 for the development of a green and efficient oxidation catalyst. The covalent introduction of light-harvesting boron-dipyrrin (BODIPY) fluorophores on the porphyrin macrocycle allows for the absorption of a broader range of visible light in addition to that captured by the porphyrin aromatic system alone. It is expected that this core-antenna system will increase the absorbed light energy and transfer it …

Competitive Reductive Removal Of Chromate And Pertechnetate Via Zero-Valent Iron, Jonathan Williams Ramirez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Treatment to immobilize radioactive waste is of concern for long-term storage, avoiding future environmental exposure. Most production of Technetium-99 (99Tc) occurred as a byproduct of development of legacy nuclear weapons research. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a promising reductant of Tc(VII) to a less mobile 99Tc(IV). However, more redox-sensitive contaminants can compete in the reductive process. Therefore, it is important to examine the effects of competitive contaminants and quantify the effects on the reductive removal rates of 99Tc. Chromate, Cr(VI), is a redox-sensitive contaminant that is expected to be present in legacy waste present in the Hanford …
