Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Chesapeake Bay Shoreline, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, George R. Thomas, Linda M. Meneghini
Reports
Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) is located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It’s shoreline along the southern Chesapeake Bay extends from Little Creek Inlet eastward approximately 1.5 miles to the NAB’s eastern boundary. In 1997, a study and report entitled “LITTLE CREEK NAVAL AMPHIBIOUS BASE, CHESAPEAKE BAY SHORELINE, SHORELINE MANAGEMENT PLAN and OFFICER’S BEACH SHORE PROTECTION EVALUATION” was produced by VIMS’s Shoreline Studies Program (Hardaway et al., 1997). The purpose of that report was to assess the rates and patterns of beach change along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline at Little Creek NAB in order to develop a shoreline management plan, …
Tangier Island, Virginia Shoreline Management Plan For The West Coast Of The Uppards, C. Scott Hardaway Jr.
Tangier Island, Virginia Shoreline Management Plan For The West Coast Of The Uppards, C. Scott Hardaway Jr.
Reports
Utilizing geo-rectified aerial photography from 1938, 1960, 1987, and 2001, shoreline change rates were determined along the Uppards. Shoreline change rates vary but are all erosional except for areas around the north end where sand bars come and go. In the area of concern between baseline stations 4000 and 4600, the rates of erosion have increased with time. Using the rate calculated from the 1938 to 2001 shorelines for station 4000, 16 ft/yr, the 400 ft marsh isthmus width between the shoreline and Toms Gut would breach in about 25 years. This would essentially break the Uppards in two and …

Investigation Of Isolated Sand Shoals On The Inner Shelf Of Southern Virginia : Final Report, Suzette M. Kimball, James K. Dame, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
Investigation Of Isolated Sand Shoals On The Inner Shelf Of Southern Virginia : Final Report, Suzette M. Kimball, James K. Dame, Carl H. Hobbs Iii
Reports
Offshore of Sandbridge Beach, Virginia, the surface of the inner continental shelf is a generally featureless, gently sloping plain, broken by several isolated sand shoals. The westernmost shoal, commonly called the Sandbridge Shoal, is located approximately 5.5 km from the shoreline in 1 O - 12 m of water. An analogous feature is located approximately 15 km northeast of the Sandbridge Shoal at depths greater than 15 m. During a pretiminary study conducted in 1987, 534 km of trackline were surveyed with acoustic subbottom and side-scan sonar systems. Geophysical data were recorded for an additional 318 km of trackline between …
Report To The Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission Commonwealth Of Virginia Concerning The Inventory Of Sand Supplies In The Southern Chesapeake Bay, Robert J. Byrne, Carl H. Hobbs Iii, Robert A. Gammish
Report To The Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission Commonwealth Of Virginia Concerning The Inventory Of Sand Supplies In The Southern Chesapeake Bay, Robert J. Byrne, Carl H. Hobbs Iii, Robert A. Gammish
Reports
In its report to the Governor and the General Assembly of Virginia (Senate Document No. 4, Commonwealth of Virginia, 1979), the Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission found that "there is a need to locate sources of sand supplies for rebuilding public beaches. Certain bottom areas in the lower Chesapeake Bay should be studied as possible sources of sand supply for public beaches." And toward that end, the Commission recommended that "The School of Marine Science, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, study and analyze possible sources of sand supply in the lower Chesapeake Bay and vicinity for …

Origin Of Mound Structures Within The Salt Marsh Of Parramore Island, Virginia, Jonathan P. Cooper
Origin Of Mound Structures Within The Salt Marsh Of Parramore Island, Virginia, Jonathan P. Cooper
Reports
The small circular mounds on Parramore Island have puzzled many people because of their amazing circularity and apparent lack of any trend but a south-southwest trend following the present coastline. In the middle of the island, aerial photographs show that the mounds generally decrease in size near their northern limit and the bare sandy tops disappear as the smaller mounds are completely covered with trees. The southernmost mounds are completely surrounded by salt marsh facies as compared to the dune facies in which the mounds are located to the north.
There has been much speculation as to the origin of …
