Trace Organic Analyses Of Effluent Waters From A Model Slurry Pipeline Carrying Appalachian Bituminous Coal : Final Report, P. O. Defur, W. G. Macintyre

Effluent waters from a model coal slurry pipeline have been analyzed for trace dissolved organic compounds. The model pipeline was operated under conditions simulating those proposed for a slurry pipeline from the region of Bristol to Hampton Roads, Virginia. Acidic, neutral and basic organic compounds in the separated waters were determined. Concentrations of individual compounds detected were generally less than 0.5 ppb and never exceeded 6 ppb. Adsorption experiments using coal slurry sorbents indicate that coal particles act as sorbing surfaces under coal slurry pipeline transport conditions.

.Recently the Nansemond and Chuckatuck basins have been designated as a Rural Clean Water Program demonstration area. This designation means that federal funds will be available to share the costs incurred by farmers when they implement the so-called Best Management Practices on their croplands, pastures, and feedlots. One requirement of the federal funding agency is that local governmental bodies monitor the quality of the waters in the area to document changes. This study was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and the Virginia Associated Research Campus (VARC), both branches of the College of William and Mary, to document the nature, extent, and severity of environmental contamination by trace elements from the landfill disposal of fly-ash within the Chisman Creek watershed. Previous work in the area demonstrated that some metals were apparently mobile in the groundwater, and that two nearby household wells were contaminated (Va. SWCB, 1981). This study is an extension of a Chespeake Bay-wide analysis of toxic organic substances into the Elizabeth and Patapsco River subestuaries. Twenty-eight surface sediment samples from the.Elizabeth River and 40 surface sediment samples from the Patapsco, were analyzed in detail for the presence of mainly aromatic and polar organic compounds. Approximately 310 distinct compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the Elizabeth River samples, and about 480 in the Patapsco. Total aromatic concentrations ranged from 440,000 to 3,100 ppb in the Elizabeth and from 2.7 x 106 to 6100 ppb in the Patapsco. Similar to observation in the.Chesapeake Bay, …

This project was designed to assess the effects of agricultural herbicides on submerged aquatic vegetation in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Atrazine was selected for testing because it is the most widely utilized herbicide in the Bay region. Zostera marina was the submerged vegetation studied.

The project began with two surveys. The first survey, conducted in 1979, covered forty eight stations throughout the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay. This manuscript discusses the results of the first two and one half years of a three-year study designed to determine the present state of xenobiotic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay. It shows that polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are the most frequently encountered compounds and are the most abundant. Concentrations are highest in the Northern Bay with several sources implicated. During this study an apparent dumping of the pesticide, DDT, occurred. Either the quantity disposed of was small enough or the assimulation capacity was large enough that no adverse effects were noted. The detection by us of 6-phenyldodecane in bottom sediments of …

Kepone entered the James River estuary from point sources of production and through runoff from unauthorized disposal sites in the vicinity of Hopewell, Virginia. The total quantity of Kepone released to the river is not known, however, about 1.5 x 106 kg were produced between 1966 and 1975. At present we estimate that 30,000 kg reside in contaminated sediments of the estuary.

Bed sediments are contaminated from the source at Hopewell to Hampton Roads, a distance of 88 kilometers. Patterns of contamination vary with sediment type and distance from the source. Major Kepone sinks exist in the Jamestown - Dancing …

Primary productivity, heterotrophic potential, chlorophyll i! and phaeophytin, ATP, and direct bacterial counts were measured in the sea surface layer under controlled spills of La Rosa and Murban crude oils following immediate dispersal with the EXXON dispersant, Corexit 9527. Tests were conducted off New York on November 9, 1978.

The response of productivity to dispersed oil appeared as an initial increase in rates, a reduction to minimal rates 1-2 hours after dispersion, and a return to pre-spill rates after 3 hours. A survey of the sediment distribution in the vicinity of the C. P. Crane Generating Station, Bengies, Maryland showed that the sediments in the creeks receiving the plant's cooling water discharge were predominantly soft clayey-silt. The benthic invertebrate taxa found in these sediments were typical of the connnunities found in oligohaline waters of Chesapeake Bay. Comparisons of the benthic community in the discharge area with the connnunities in two reference areas of similar sediment type revealed an apparent reduction in the discharge area population of the dominant amphipod, Leptocheirus plumulosus, in August.

In the spring of 1975 the Institute began a program to determine whether significant environmental changes would occur in the area of the new James River Plant outfall that might be related to its construction and/or initial operation. Parameters measured in the study were benthic animal and oyster populations, coliform levels and chlorine residuals. The primary emphasis of the study centered on the estimation of the impact of the construction activity on shellfish beds in the area. A literature review of past and on-going research and activities of the principal investigators is the basis for evaluating environmental effects of highways in wetlands. Values of wetl8,$1ds are discussed briefly. Physical. biological and chemical impacts are associated with highway construction. operation and maintenance. Environmental impacts are scaled in terms of magnitude and duration and mitigating measures are identified. The foregoing are summarized in matrices. The report further identifies further research which is needed to design highway projects with environmental aspects in mind.
