A homemade RF capacitive coupled discharge system operating in wide range of pressures (from low pressure up to atmospheric pressure) was constructed. Electrical and optical characteristics of the constructed system were measured for argon discharge operated at wide range of pressure (from low pressure up to atmospheric pressure) and RF power up to 150 Watt. The discharge was operated using two bare metallic copper electrodes with separation distance of 5 mm and it was kept constant in all discharge conditions. A total of eleven superdeformed rotational bands (SDRB’s) in the A=190 mass zone were described in the framework of a novel proposed simple phenomenological rotational formula as outcome of collective model. The proposed model contains the original pure rotation limit AI (I+1) plus perturbation term proportionate to the cubic power of the spin I. The bandhead spins and the model parameters were selected by a best fit method, utilizing a computerized search program to obtain best match between experimental and calculated transition energies. In the current work, the role of tungsten ions on the structural and optical properties of sodium borosilicate germinate glass with the composition [70 Na 2B4O7e15 SiO2e(15-x) (Ge2O3) e x (WO3) while, x ¼ 0,2,4, 6, 8 mol %] were studied. Fast quenching method were used to prepare the glass samples. Experimental and empirical density results confirm the amorphous nature of the prepared samples. Fourier transform infrared, FTIR, results showed N4 decreases as WO3 increases. These results suggest that the decreasing in non-bridging oxygen (NBO), back conversion BO4 to BO3, occur by the increase of WO3. Optical band gap show …

In this paper, machine learning techniques are used to reconstruct particle collision pathways. CERN (Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire) uses a massive underground particle collider, called the Large Hadron Collider or LHC, to produce particle collisions at extremely high speeds. There are several layers of detectors in the collider that track the pathways of particles as they collide. The data produced from collisions contains an extraneous amount of background noise, i.e., decays from known particle collisions produce fake signal. Particularly, in the first layer of the detector, the pixel tracker, there is an overwhelming amount of background noise that …

Students from graphic design and physics classes at SUNY Cortland collaborated during the spring semester of 2020 on a multidisciplinary project related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In these collaborations, the students’ individual contributions were part of a larger project that required a diverse skill set, through which students learned how different skills can complement their own disciplines. The graphic design and physics instructors applied a project-based learning philosophy applying the Common Problem Pedagogy (CPP) framework to construct student-teams composed of both disciplines. This project explored how coordinated social actions can allow the public to exercise control in uncertain times. Students …

This research paper explores drawing as a tool to facilitate interdisciplinary practice. Outlined is the personal experience of PhD researcher [name removed] in their physics/craft research project, combined with thoughts and opinions from collaborators gathered through group discursive interviews. Interdisciplinary projects face interpersonal and conceptually ambiguous challenges which can be addressed through adopting drawing techniques for educational purposes. Findings highlight that drawing can assist across a breadth of applications as a learning tool for everyone, regardless of drawing ability, to improve the functionality of collaborative projects. Vortices are well known in our world: tornadoes, hurricanes, and quickly stirred iced tea all demonstrate the vortex phenomenon. In addition to these classical fluids, vortices exist in laser light. While classical fluid vortex dynamics is one of the oldest studied physics problems, the study of optical vortices is only a few decades old. Paralleling the community’s curiosity of quantized vortices in quantum fluids, such as super fluid helium and Bose-Einstein condensate, there is immense interest in the study of optical vortices. The Common Problem Pedagogy (CPP) project, a learning initiative implemented in four SUNY schools, aims to provide students with multidisciplinary, project-based experiences, and to foster a culture of such pedagogy among faculty. This work describes one CPP project that was conducted at SUNY Cortland during the Spring 2019 semester that brought together students from physics and graphic design disciplines. Thomson, Rayleigh, Mie, and Raman scattering are commonly used in several disciplines in science and engineering. The techniques involve the scattering of electromagnetic radiation or particles in a sample. This paper provides a brief history for each scattering method, describes the traditional laboratory approach for implementation, and discusses current uses and variations of these four techniques.

The purpose of this study is to identify Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) using spectroscopic and photometric data. CVs are useful for studying plasma physics in extreme conditions such as the high temperature and strong magnetic fields seen in CV accretion disks. They are also critical for understanding the evolution of binary stars, both in the field and in globular clusters. This project used photometric and spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to identify and classify CVs. 6,000 objects were selected based on multi-color criteria and analyzed using spectral data. We constructed a ring Halbach array of strong NdBeB grade 52 arc-segment magnets, with magnetizations chosen to create a one-sided magnet with the field magnified on the flat side. We investigated a repulsive axial levitating forces and associated circumferential drag forces acting on an assembly of inductors suspended above the rotating array. After measuring induced currents, voltages and magnetic fields in the individual inductors (in the form of short solenoids) of our induction wheels, we investigated the dependence of lift/drag forces on the speed of relative rotation of magnets and inductors. Revolutions in scientific thought often have substantial societal consequences, however, cultural assimilation of the new idea is contingent on a widespread understanding. Historically recent developments in modern physics, such as quantum mechanics and general relativity, suffer from their notoriously perceived difficulty, thus hindering cultural assimilation. To address this issue, art can serve as a useful complement to a student studying quantum mechanics - especially through its interpretation of delocalized electron density. A cross-disciplinary approach affords a greater diversity in participation and consequently results in a broader scientific outreach.

How do we travel through time? We know that we can move forward in it (we have no choice), but can we jump forward in time? Can we go backward in time? It also gives rise to other troubling questions: is time measurable in distinct increments, or does it flow continuously? In "Models of Time Travel and their Consequences," Antonio Mantica walks the reader through current understandings of how time functions in Einstein's universe and proposes three distinct models to explain it.
