The world is currently undergoing an energy transition from primarily fossil fuels to cleaner energy. The developing world is becoming more advanced, spawning relentless economic growth and an increase in energy consumption. Energy demand and economic growth are inextricably linked which poses a paradoxical question about future economic growth during a period of energy transition. Unfortunately, the transition requires large upfront costs with no guaranteed net benefit. The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is a parasitic copepod that infects wild and farmed salmonids throughout the northern hemisphere. L. salmonis represents the largest economic hurdle of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) industry, with an estimated annual cost of nearly $1 billion globally due to production losses and anti-parasitic control measures. Salmon farming in Maine has existed for decades and is a critical economic driver, yet the region is underrepresented in global sea lice research. Abstract: A dynamic mathematical model of coal pulverizing system was analyzed. Simulation experiments on mill operation process were conducted by PFC3D software platform based on discrete element method. The associated data between different coal quality, coal storage and balls' motion were obtained under certain quantitative optimized operating parameters configuration. Neural network model of information fusion for coal storage and kinetic energy of ball mill was established by using an adaptive combination learning algorithm. Techno-economic analyses play an important role in determining locations for conventional wind turbine installations. This method is utilized to assess energy production potential for a new type of wind technology, known as airborne wind energy (AWE). The first objective of the present thesis was to determine overall investment potential of a utility-scale floating offshore airborne wind farm, testing five floating platform design concepts. The second objective was to determine whether the wind resources (100-1500 m) are ideal to support AWE systems in the Gulf of Mexico. Problem solving interviews were used to investigate student understanding of energy concepts in a biology course for preservice K-8 teachers. Interview subjects constructed an energy-based explanation for a biology scenario. Subjects had previously taken a physics course in which an energy-based model for interactions had been developed. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed to identify common themes in student reasoning. These themes describe discipline-specific understanding, but also cut across disciplines, providing insight into how learners make sense of energy as a unifying concept.

The Box-Cox transformation is a way to transform non-normal data into more normally distributed data. However, when we fit linear regression models to transformed data, we cannot use the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) directly to compare different models since the transformed data are no longer on the same scale. In this study, the Jacobian adjusted AIC is proposed to compare regression models on transformed data and to select an “optimal” value of the transformation parameter. The purpose of this project is to design a clean energy-sourced microgrid for UConn’s main campus that would reduce the university’s energy emissions while remaining within the geographic boundaries of viable UConn-owned land. Economic cost was not considered in this analysis; instead, emissions and space constraints were the optimized measures of value and feasibility. Sources of energy that were considered include photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, hydrokinetic systems, and fuel cells. Energy storage capacity was included in the analysis as well. Abstract: To balance the performance and energy consumption of the mixed-model assembly lines effectively, a multi-objective energy-saving scheduling method for the tow-train is proposed. An equilateral triangular prism is used as the fundamental building block to con- struct additive Sierpinski fractals, enabling new surface plasmon resonances (SPR) in the first three generations of Sierpinski triangles, as well as topological intermediaries between generations. The modes are characterized using electron energy loss spectroscopy accompanied by eigenmode calculations and optical finite-difference time domain simulations. The complex fractal geometries present a predictable hierarchy of new resonances, each arising from the previous generational building blocks used to construct the fractal. Intermediate structures break the polarization degeneracy of the equilateral fractals while maintaining a rich multiband spectral response. Engineering defects …

Due to the enhanced demand for numerous electrical energy storage applications, including applications at elevated temperatures, dielectric capacitors with optimized energy storage properties have attracted extensive attention. In this study, a series of lead-free strontium bismuth titanate based relaxor ferroelectric ceramics have been successfully synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction. The ultrahigh recoverable energy storage density of 4.2 J/cm3 under 380 kV/cm, with the high efficiency of 88%, was obtained in the sample with x = 0.06. Hawaii's commercial consumers pay the highest electricity rate in the United States;these costs are expected to rise 3-3.5% in 2021. Management in the Hawaiian resort industry that lacks adequate knowledge of controlling these rising costs is at a competitive disadvantage. Utilizing the diffusion of innovation theory, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore strategies used in the resort industry to control energy costs. Conventional wisdom holds that democracy is structurally ill-equipped to confront climate change. As the story goes, because each of us tends to dismiss consequences that befall people in other places and in future times, “the people” cannot be trusted to craft adequate decarbonization policies, designed to reduce present-day, domestic carbon emissions.
