Energy And Risk: Discourse, Framing, And Content, Temis Gardner Taylor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research examined how people communicate and create knowledge about energy-related risks. Analysis of the discourse, frames, and content surrounding unconventional energy policy and development in the Western United States was conducted using three case studies. The results contribute to an understanding of energy-related risk perceptions in social and historical contexts.
Discourses contained in newspapers and public comments to the Bureau of Land Management presented arguments on the basis of risks to the environment; climate; human health and safety; jobs and economic prosperity; property rights; and local governments. Governments were seen as risks when they were perceived to allow misuse …

Energy And Water Assessment And Plausibility Of Reuse Of Spent Caustic Solution In A Midwest Fluid Milk Processing Plant, Carly Rain Adams
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Food Energy and Water Nexus (FEW Nexus) is the inseparable connection linking these resources. The concept of the FEW Nexus within the food industry addresses the connection of water and energy as key members of food production. The steady increase in population and the increase in food demand are directly related, therefore, the need for water and energy. Immediately taking on this critical challenge will lead to tangible impacts on the water and energy crisis facing the food system. To reduce the distance between process productivity and resource efficiency it must first be determined, within food processing, where water …

Cross-Platform, Public Domain Simulation Tools For Performing Parametric Iaq And Energy Analysis, Stuart W. Dols, Lindsay J. Underhill
International Building Physics Conference 2018
As building design is being driven towards lower energy use, the relationship between indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy becomes more important due in large part to reduced building envelope leakage, which can lead to higher indoor pollutant levels. Simulation tools that can analyze building design measures that aim to improve IAQ and energy use are necessary for evaluating potential trade-offs involving such measures. This paper will present the use of CONTAM and EnergyPlus, coupled using co-simulation, to perform parametric analysis of IAQ and energy impacts. Both of these tools are available in the public domain and provide cross-platform methods …

The atomic nucleus is one of the densest and most complex quantum-mechanical systems in nature. Nuclei account for nearly all the mass of the visible Universe. The properties of individual nucleons (protons and neutrons) in nuclei can be probed by scattering a high-energy particle from the nucleus and detecting this particle after it scatters, often also detecting an additional knocked-out proton. Analysis of electron- and proton-scattering experiments suggests that some nucleons in nuclei form close-proximity neutron–proton pairs with high nucleon momentum, greater than the nuclear Fermi momentum. However, how excess neutrons in neutron-rich nuclei form such close-proximity pairs remains unclear. …
Electronic Effect Of Platinum Alloy Catalysts On Olefin Hydrogenation Kinetics, Colin Reedy, Jeff Miller, Stephen Purdy
Electronic Effect Of Platinum Alloy Catalysts On Olefin Hydrogenation Kinetics, Colin Reedy, Jeff Miller, Stephen Purdy
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Dehydrogenation of alkanes is the first step in transforming light hydrocarbons into liquid fuels and chemicals. This process has traditionally used platinum alloys as catalysts. Alloys are used industrially because they have a greater selectivity than monometallic platinum. Alloying platinum with an inactive promoter modifies the crystalline structure of the surface (geometric effect), and the 5d electrons in platinum responsible for chemistry (electronic effect); both have been suggested to be primarily responsible for dehydrogenation selectivity in platinum alloys. Alloy catalysts have been synthesized using early 3d transition metal promoters with the same Pt3M crystal structure. X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy …
Looking Toward The Future: The Value Of Geothermal Energy In The United States Power Market, Reilly R. Moran
Looking Toward The Future: The Value Of Geothermal Energy In The United States Power Market, Reilly R. Moran
STAR Program Research Presentations
States are creating renewable portfolio standards (RPSs) that require utilities to run off a certain percentage of renewables. With the new RPSs and current emission standards the dynamic of the grids energy and reliability needs are changing. Because RPSs and emission standards, utilities are procuring the cheapest renewable resources, which tend to be solar and wind. As RPSs increase over time this causes higher procurements of solar and wind. Higher procurement and increasing penetration levels of solar and wind is causing their energy values to decrease as well as some reliability concerns. While geothermal energy value will continue to stay …

Design Guidelines And Strategies For Thermal Solar Management Of Fenestration In The Desert Climate, David Mccredo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This research evaluates the effects of varying thermal properties of windows in
residential energy use for the moderate altitude and 36'N latitude climate of southern
Nevada, which has a distinct cooling season. A selection of windows across different
shading conditions and total window areas were studied using BEopt energy simulation.
Findings demonstrate that for the specific climate, latitude, and altitude of Las Vegas,
Nevada, the most expensive “high performance” windows are not always the best
option in terms of total site energy use, and can be outperformed by properly shaded
less advanced windows. Under certain conditions, shading was found to …

Energy Calculations And Wave Equations, Ellen R. Hunter
MSU Graduate Theses
The focus of this thesis is to show how methods of Fourier analysis, in particular Parseval’s equality, can be used to provide explicit energy calculations for solutions of wave equations in one dimension. These calculations are discussed for simple examples and then extended to fit the general wave equation with Robin boundary conditions. Ideas from Sobolev space theory are used to provide justification of the method.
Thermoelectrics And Thermoelectric Devices, Benjamin T. Erck
Thermoelectrics And Thermoelectric Devices, Benjamin T. Erck
Senior Theses
The field of thermoelectrics has many applications, and more are found in everyday systems. From its current studies, it is apparent that improving the figure of merit zT (which defines a good thermoelectric material) is important in the effectiveness of power generation. Another important part of thermoelectrics is the duality of these devices. They can both move heat and generate power, depending on their role in the system. In this thesis research, a process was made to test these thermoelectric relationships for a few Peltier devices in order to understand their efficiencies and what systems they can be applied to.

Saving Olivet Money With Creation Care, Nicholas Boros
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Universities throughout the United States are searching for ways to reduce overhead costs, to help combat rises in tuition costs. Typically, one would think that installing solar panels on campus to help generate electricity would cost Olivet money, especially since the University is located in the Midwest. While such an undertaking would require an upfront investment, we will discuss how solar panels could save the University as much as $500,000 to $800,000 per year after an approximate 10 year break even point. We will also briefly discuss how similar approaches could be applied to other businesses and homes for a …

Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher Carr
Functionalized Nanoporous Carbon Scaffolds For Hydrogen Storage Applications, Christopher Carr
Dissertations
Recent efforts have demonstrated confinement in porous scaffolds at the nanoscale can alter the hydrogen sorption properties of metal hydrides, though not to an extent feasible for use in onboard hydrogen storage applications, proposing the need for a method allowing further modifications. The work presented here explores how the functionalization of nanoporous carbon scaffold surfaces with heteroatoms can modify the hydrogen sorption properties of confined metal hydrides in relation to non-functionalized scaffolds (FS). Investigations of nanoconfined LiBH4and NaAlH4indicate functionalizing the carbon scaffold surface with nitrogen can shift the activation energy of hydrogen desorption in excess of …

Rental Property Energy Efficiency In San Luis Obispo, Zachary Earl Shockley
Physics
In the modern era, many people choose to rent homes instead of purchasing a home. College towns have an even more disproportionate number of renters when compared to other cities. The majority of rental properties are much less energy efficient than their owner-occupied counterparts. This project analyzes the energy efficiency issues of rental properties in San Luis Obispo and examines potential ways to remedy these issues. In order to analyze these issues, the guiding principles of building science are first discussed, followed by case studies of rental properties in San Luis Obispo. These case studies examine multiple rental properties and …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers
Metal selenides have attracted increased attentionas promising electrode materials for electrochemical energy storageand conversion systems including metal-ion batteries and watersplitting. However, their practical application is greatly hindered bycollapse of the microstructure, thus leading to performance fading.Tuning the structure at nanoscale of these materials is an effectivestrategy to address the issue. Herein, we craft MoSe2withhierarchical hollow structures via a facile bubble-assistedsolvothermal method. The temperature-related variations of thehollow interiors are studied, which can be presented as solid, yolk−shell, and hollow spheres, respectively. Under the simultaneousaction of the distinctive hollow structures and interconnectionsamong the nanosheets, more intimate contacts between MoSe2and electrolyte can be …

Sodium Borohydride For The Near-Future Energy: A ''Rough Diamond'' For Turkey, Ümi̇t Bi̇lge Demi̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Boron-based materials are potential solutions in the field of energy. They have been regarded as hydrogen storage materials, liquid fuels of direct liquid-fed fuel cells (DLFCs), electrolytes of battery, and/or energetic substances. A typical example is sodium borohydride (NaBH$_{4}$. In sodium hydroxide-stabilized aqueous solutions, it is seen as an efficient H$_{2}$ generator or a performing fuel of DLFCs. Actually, it plays a wider role; it is also the precursor of several boron-based materials of interest in the field of energy. In other words, it is indirectly considered for other energy applications, i.e. solid electrolytes of all solid-state batteries and hypergolic …
