Reports

The data contained within the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. The assessment characterizes conditions that are observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach reports conditions in three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Three GIS coverages are generated. The lynn_lubc coverage contains features related to the land use …

Alternative Paths To Intelligent Systems, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2007

Alternative Paths To Intelligent Systems, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper examines the three prevalent approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI), namely symbolic reasoning systems, connectionist systems, and emergent systems based on the principles of the subsumption theory. Distinguished by their top-down and bottom-up mechanisms all three approaches have strengths and weaknesses. While the logical reasoning approach is precise and well supported by mathematical theories and procedures, it is constrained by a largely predefined representational model. Connectionist systems, on the other hand, are able to recognize patterns even if these patterns are only similar and not identical to the patterns that they have been trained to recognize, but they have …

Knowledge Management Enterprise Services (Kmes): Concepts And Implementation Principles, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2007

Knowledge Management Enterprise Services (Kmes): Concepts And Implementation Principles, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present concepts and implementation principles related to the design and development of reusable software services that are capable of assisting users at the operational level. Knowledge Management Enterprise Services (KMES) are an implementation of the service-oriented architecture paradigm, with a focus on the exchange of data within the meaningful context of a particular application (i.e., knowledge) domain. This requires a KMES service to incorporate a high level representation of this knowledge domain in the form of an ontology that is shared among all collaborating services within the application environment and at the same …

Data Mining Of Misr Aerosol Product Using Spatial Statistics, Tao Shi, Noel A. Cressie Jan 2007

Data Mining Of Misr Aerosol Product Using Spatial Statistics, Tao Shi, Noel A. Cressie

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In climate models, aerosol forcing is the major source of uncertainty in climate forcing, over the industrial period. To reduce this uncertainty, instruments on satellites have been put in place to collect global data. However, missing and noisy observations impose considerable difficulties for scientists researching global aerosol distribution, aerosol transportation, and comparisons between satellite observations and global-climate-model outputs. In this paper, we propose a Spatial Mixed Effects (SME) statistical model to predict the missing values, denoise the observed values, and quantify the spatial-prediction uncertainties. The computations associated with the SME model are linear scalable to the number of data points, …

Parallel research programs encompassing the hydrodynamics and geochemistry have been undertaken in Oatley Bay, a small urban estuary that is a lower tributary to the Georges River in Southern Sydney Using field data and a simple numerical model, the regimes of flow effecting circulation in Oatley Bay have been determined. The efficiency of flushing and the subsequent fate of conservative pollutants are discussed. The field data comprised bathymetry, tides, drogue tracking and dye tests, the latter enabling the calibration of the model under different environmental conditions. With this model we have performed numerous runs and have characterised temporal and spatial …

Impact Of Data Uncertainty On The Spatio-Temporal Distribution Of Australian Cyclones, 1906-2006, Marjetta L. Puotinen

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Tropical cyclones (known elsewhere as hurricanes or typhoons) regularly track through Australia’s northern coastal regions (Figure 1).

Data documenting the basic characteristics of cyclones in the Australian region is available from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) as early as 1906. This data set (freely available in ASCII format at http://www.bom.gov.au) records some 41 attributes (most of which are not complete for the entire time series) for 22,645 individual cyclone eye positions. Because cyclones can cause considerable impact to both marine and terrestrial environments, data sets such as this are widely used to reconstruct past cyclone conditions (for example, see Berz …

1H-3-Hydroxy-4-oxoquinoline 2,4-dioxygenase (QDO) from Pseudomonas putida 33/1 catalyses the oxygenolysis of 1H-3-hydroxy-4-oxoquinoline to form N-formylanthranilic acid and carbon monoxide without the aid of cofactors. Both N-terminally His6-tagged and native QDO were overexpressed in Escherichia coli and purified by conventional chromatographic procedures. Untagged QDO, but not His6-tagged QDO, was crystallized by the vapour-diffusion method, giving hexagonal bipyramid crystals belonging to space group P6(1)22. Selenomethionine-containing native QDO was prepared and crystallized under identical conditions. The unit-cell parameters were a = b = 90.1, c = 168.6 A, alpha = beta = 90, gamma = 120 degrees. Using synchrotron radiation, these crystals diffract …

The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) mission was launched in August 2003 to sound the atmosphere by solar occultation. Carbon monoxide (CO), a good tracer of pollution plumes and atmospheric dynamics, is one of the key species provided by the primary instrument, the ACE-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS). This instrument performs measurements in both the CO 1-0 and 2-0 ro-vibrational bands, from which vertically resolved CO concentration profiles are retrieved, from the mid-troposphere to the thermosphere. This paper presents an updated description of the ACE-FTS version 2.2 CO data product, along with a comprehensive validation of these profiles using available observations (February …

Application Of Semistructured Data Model To The Implementation Of Semantic Content-Based Video Retrieval System, Lilac A. E. Al-Safadi, Janusz R. Getta

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Semantic indexing of a video document is a process that performs the identification of elementary and complex semantic units in the indexed document in order to create a semantic index defined as a mapping of semantic units into the sequences of video frames. Semantic content-based video retrieval system is a software system that uses a semantic index built over a collection of video documents to retrieve the sequences of video frames that satisfy the given conditions. This work introduces a new multilevel view of data for the semantic content-based video retrieval systems. At the topmost level, we define an abstract …

Gis Data: Westmoreland County, Virginia Shoreline Inventory Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Carl Hershner, Sharon Killeen, Karinna Nunez, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt, David Weiss

Data

The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. In most cases this assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features observed. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Three GIS coverages are generated. The westm_lubc …
