Delineation Of The Lower Permian Gas Sand Via Calibrated Avo And Pre-Stack Seismic Inversions In Majhol Field, Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Alhashel
Delineation Of The Lower Permian Gas Sand Via Calibrated Avo And Pre-Stack Seismic Inversions In Majhol Field, Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Alhashel
Theses and Dissertations
The lower Permian formation in the central region of Saudi Arabia is a key hydrocarbon siliciclastic reservoir. However, in Majhol field, the reservoir properties vary laterally due to diagenesis and facies changes. Conventional seismic interpretation has failed to map the heterogeneities of the reservoir properties that control the gas production of this field. Therefore, there was an opportunity to employ more advanced quantitative seismic techniques to delineate the productive gas sand facies in the field.
The Majhol field was initially planned to be developed as an unconventional tight reservoir. Well-1 was drilled based on conventional seismic interpretation on the crest …
Hadronic Lorentz Violation In Chiral Perturbation Theory, Rasha Kamand
Hadronic Lorentz Violation In Chiral Perturbation Theory, Rasha Kamand
Theses and Dissertations
The leading-order Lorentz-violating hadronic Lagrange densities are constructed using chiral perturbation theory. This is done for both pions and nucleons starting from a two-flavor quark-level Lagrangian that consists of dimension-four Lorentzviolation operators. The effective Lagrangians are first constructed in the absence of external fields. The formalism is then extended to include interactions with external fields. The presence of Lorentz violation modifies the transformation behavior of external fields under the chiral group SU(2)L × SU(2)R. This in turn leads to modified pion and nucleon covariant derivatives. By expanding parts of both mesonic and baryonic Lagragians in terms of physical pion and …
Understanding The Activity Of Model Catalyst Surfaces: Ultrahigh Vacuum And Atmospheric Pressure Studies, Kangmin Xie
Understanding The Activity Of Model Catalyst Surfaces: Ultrahigh Vacuum And Atmospheric Pressure Studies, Kangmin Xie
Theses and Dissertations
Heterogeneous Catalysis plays an extremely important role in the world. Metal particles supported on oxide supports are the most widely employed heterogeneous catalysts. In order to provide insight into the development of new catalytic materials, a fundamental understanding of surface reactions is required. Vapor-deposited metal clusters on single-crystal surfaces are well-defined systems that can be used to understand the structure-relationships in commercial catalysts. The pressure gap between fundamental surface analysis under ultra-high vacuum (UHV, P~10-10 Torr) conditions and kinetic evaluation of catalysts under realistic pressures has been bridged by constructing a micro-reactor interfaced with UHV chamber: pre- and post-reaction surfaces …
Surface Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Ii-Vi Semiconductor Nanowires, Pravin Paudel
Surface Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Ii-Vi Semiconductor Nanowires, Pravin Paudel
Theses and Dissertations
Semiconductor nanowires have been widely studied due to their unique properties such as width comparable to critical length-scales, high aspect ratio, and high carrier mobility. These unique properties make them a suitable candidate for various optical and electronic devices like photovoltaics, photodetectors, and field effect transistors. The nanowire surface plays an important role in the performance of these devices because of their high surface to volume ratio. The larger surface area of nanowires may provide better charge separation than planar heterostructures in photovoltaics by providing shorter distance to move for carrier before separation, however, presence of surface states may lead …
Binary Quartic Forms Over Fp, Daniel Thomas Kamenetsky
Binary Quartic Forms Over Fp, Daniel Thomas Kamenetsky
Theses and Dissertations
Let Vp denote the five dimensional vector space of binary quartic forms over the finite field Fp, with p a prime greater than 3. There is a natural action of the group GL1(Fp)×GL2(Fp) on Vp. This action partitions Vp into orbits, the number of which increases with p. In this thesis, we determine explicitly, for a given p, the number of orbits under the action of GL1(Fp) × GL2(Fp) on Vp. Moreover, we determine the size of each orbit and the general structure of the forms each orbit contains. We also introduce an application of understanding these orbits to the …
Exclusive Π− Electroproduction Off The Neutron In Deuterium In The Resonance Region, Ye Tian
Exclusive Π− Electroproduction Off The Neutron In Deuterium In The Resonance Region, Ye Tian
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on extracting the exclusive γ∗n(p) → pπ-(p) reaction cross section from deuterium data. The existing γ∗n → pπ- event generator is modified to include the spectator (proton) information based on the CD-Bonn potential [28] to simulate the real data process. With this method, the exclusive quasi-free process is isolated successfully as demonstrated by the comparison of the spectator momentum distribution of the simulation with the missing momentum distribution of the data, and the kinematical final-state-interaction contribution factor RFSI is extracted directly from the data according to the ratio between the exclusive quasi-free and full cross sections. The …
Global A Priori Estimates And Sharp Existence Results For Quasilinear Equations On Nonsmooth Domains., Karthik Adimurthi
Global A Priori Estimates And Sharp Existence Results For Quasilinear Equations On Nonsmooth Domains., Karthik Adimurthi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis deals obtaining global a priori estimates for quasilinear elliptic equations and sharp existence results for Quasilinear equations with gradient nonlinearity on the right. The main results are contained in Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6. In Chapters 3 and 4, we obtain global unweighted a priori estimates for very weak solutions below the natural exponent and weighted estimates at the natural exponent. The weights we consider are the well studied Muckenhoupt weights. Using the results obtained in Chapter 4, we obtain sharp existence result for quasilinear operators with gradient type nonlinearity on the right. We characterize the function …
Mathematical Frameworks For Consciousness, Menas C. Kafatos, Ashok Narasimhan
Mathematical Frameworks For Consciousness, Menas C. Kafatos, Ashok Narasimhan
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
If Awareness is fundamental in the universe, mathematical frameworks are better suited to reveal its fundamental aspects than physical models. Awareness operates through three fundamental laws which apply at all levels of reality and is characterized by three universal powers. We explore and summarize in general terms mathematical formalisms that may take us as close as possible to conscious awareness, beginning with the primary relationships between the observer with the observed, using a Hilbert space approach. We also examine insights from category theory, and the calculus of indications or laws of forms. Mathematical frameworks as fundamental languages of our interaction …

Higher Order Z-Ideals In Commutative Rings, Themba Dube, Oghenetega Ighedo
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We study ideals that resemble z-ideals in commutative rings with identity. For each positive integer n, we say an ideal of a commutative ring A is a zn-ideal in case it has the property that if a and b belong to the same maximal ideals of A, and an ϵ I , then bn is also in I. The set of all zn-ideals of A is denoted by A --> ʒn (A). This gives an ascending chain ʒ(A) < ʒ2(A) < ʒ3(A) <… of collections of ideals, starting with the collection of z-ideals. ……>
Three Simple Experiments To Examine The Effect Of Sediment Pollution On Algae-Based Food Webs In Streams, Patrick M. Edwards, Rodney Shroufe
Three Simple Experiments To Examine The Effect Of Sediment Pollution On Algae-Based Food Webs In Streams, Patrick M. Edwards, Rodney Shroufe
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Streams and stream macroinvertebrates are ideal natural systems for ecological inquiry. We present three simple experiments that students can use to conduct field-based investigations which illustrate the importance of algae-based food webs in streams and measure the effects of sediment pollution (scour and deposition) on stream ecological processes. Over the past 5 years, we have conducted these experiments 19 times with our students. We report on the results and reliability of these experiments and make suggestions for other educators who may want to conduct them.
Cluster Algebras And Maximal Green Sequences For Closed Surfaces, Eric Bucher
Cluster Algebras And Maximal Green Sequences For Closed Surfaces, Eric Bucher
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Given a marked surface (S,M) we can add arcs to the surface to create a triangulation, T, of that surface. For each triangulation, T, we can associate a cluster algebra. In this paper we will consider orientable surfaces of genus n with two interior marked points and no boundary component. We will construct a specific triangulation of this surface which yields a quiver. Then in the sense of work by Keller we will produce a maximal green sequence for this quiver. Since all finite mutation type cluster algebras can be associated to a surface, with some rare exceptions, this work …
Pesticide Partitioning In Louisiana Wetland Aand Ricefield Sediment, Brendan Michael Marsh
Pesticide Partitioning In Louisiana Wetland Aand Ricefield Sediment, Brendan Michael Marsh
LSU Master's Theses
Pesticides are used globally and are often found within bodies of water. The EPA investigates the potential environmental impact through computer modeling in order to help mitigate some of the regulatory burden of pesticide fate investigation. Currently when pesticides enter a water body, the Exposure Analysis Modeling System (EXAMS) estimates partitioning depth as 5 cm and assumes equal distribution. This assumption was tested with a wide variety of pesticides with varying Koc ranges and water solubilities. Savillex 150 ml Teflon tubes were filled with wetland and ricefield sediments with fresh and seawater as the aqueous phase. The seven pesticides tested …

A Polyhedral Model Of Partitions With Bounded Differences And A Bijective Proof Of A Theorem Of Andrews, Beck, And Robbins, Felix Breuer, Brandt Kronholm
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The smallest part is a rational function. This result is similar to the closely related case of partitions with fixed differences between largest and smallest parts which has recently been studied through analytic methods by Andrews, Beck, and Robbins. Our approach is geometric: We model partitions with bounded differences as lattice points in an infinite union of polyhedral cones. Surprisingly, this infinite union tiles a single simplicial cone. This construction then leads to a bijection that can be interpreted on a purely combinatorial level.
Cluster Enhanced Nanopore Spectrometry, Amy Chavis
Cluster Enhanced Nanopore Spectrometry, Amy Chavis
Theses and Dissertations
Nanopore sensing is a label-free method used to characterize water-soluble molecules. Recent work describes how Au25(SG)18 clusters improve the single molecule nanopore spectrometry (SMNS) technique when analyzing polyethylene glycol (PEG). This thesis will further study and optimize the enhancement effect resulting from a cluster’s presence. Additionally, a model describing the interaction between a cluster and PEG is developed to assist in understanding this mechanism of enhancement. This thesis will also discuss expanding the SMNS method to detect peptides, using Au25(SG)18 for enhancement, and adjusting solution conditions to improve the sensitivity of the SMNS system …

Improving The Vector Auto Regression Technique For Time-Series Link Prediction By Using Support Vector Machine, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Jan Miles Co
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
Predicting links between the nodes of a graph has become an important Data Mining task because of its direct applications to biology, social networking, communication surveillance, and other domains. Recent literature in time-series link prediction has shown that the Vector Auto Regression (VAR) technique is one of the most accurate for this problem. In this study, we apply Support Vector Machine (SVM) to improve the VAR technique that uses an unweighted adjacency matrix along with 5 matrices: Common Neighbor (CN), Adamic-Adar (AA), Jaccard’s Coefficient (JC), Preferential Attachment (PA), and Research Allocation Index (RA). A DBLP dataset covering the years from …

K-D Tree-Segmented Block Truncation Coding For Image Compression, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Ryan Rey M. Daga
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
Block truncation coding (BTC) is a class of image compression algorithms whose main technique is the partitioning of an image into pixel blocks that are then each encoded using a representative set of pixel values. It is commonly used because of its simplicity and low computational complexity. The Quadtree-segmented BTC (QTS-BTC), which utilizes a dynamic hierarchical segmentation technique, is among the most efficient in the BTC class. In this study, we propose a new BTC variant that introduces two ideas: (1) the use of a k-d tree for segmentation and (2) the use of a Mean Squared Error (MSE) threshold …

Geotagged social media is becoming highly popular as social media access is now made very easy through a wide range of mobile apps which automatically detect and augment social media posts with geo-locations. In this paper, we analyze two kinds of location-based patterns. The first is the association between location attributes and the locations of user tweets. The second is location association pattern which comprises a pair of locations that are co-visited by users. We demonstrate that through tracking the Twitter data of Singapore-based users, we are able to reveal association between users tweeting from school locations and the school …

A Comparison Of Fundamental Network Formation Principles Between Offline And Online Friends On Twitter, Felicia Natali, Feida Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We investigate the differences between how some of the fundamental principles of network formation apply among offline friends and how they apply among online friends on Twitter. We consider three fundamental principles of network formation proposed by Schaefer et al.: reciprocity, popularity, and triadic closure. Overall, we discover that these principles mainly apply to offline friends on Twitter. Based on how these principles apply to offline versus online friends, we formulate rules to predict offline friendship on Twitter. We compare our algorithm with popular machine learning algorithms and Xiewei’s random walk algorithm. Our algorithm beats the machine learning algorithms on …

Temporal Variations Of Streamflow In A Mid-Latitude Eurasian Steppe Watershed In The Past Half Century, Xixi Wang
Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Previous studies either did not identify abrupt change or identified such change but did not exclude it from the detection of trend in streamflow. As a result, an overall downward trend might be erroneously detected as an upward trend because of abrupt increase, while an overall upward trend could be faked as a downward trend due to abrupt decrease. The objectives of this study were to: (1) present a methodology to analyze trend in streamflow in the presence of abrupt change; and (2) use this methodology to detect trend and extreme occurrence of streamflow in the Upper Balagaer River watershed, …

The first observational run of the Advanced LIGO detectors, from September 12, 2015 to January 19, 2016, saw the first detections of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers. In this paper, we present full results from a search for binary black hole merger signals with total masses up to 100M· and detailed implications from our observations of these systems. Our search, based on general-relativistic models of gravitational-wave signals from binary black hole systems, unambiguously identified two signals, GW150914 and GW151226, with a significance of greater than 5s over the observing period. It also identified a third possible signal, LVT151012, …

The production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by planktonic microbes can influence the fate of oil and chemical dispersants in the ocean through emulsification, degradation, dispersion, aggregation, and/or sedimentation. In turn, microbial community structure and function, including the production and character of EPS, is influenced by the concentration and chemical composition of oil and chemical dispersants. For example, the production of marine oil snow and its sedimentation and flocculent accumulation to the seafloor were observed on an expansive scale after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Northern Gulf of Mexico in 2010, but little is known about the underlying …

The human and environmental risks associated with Pu disposal, remediation, and nuclear accidents scenarios stems mainly from the very long half-lives of several of its isotopes. The SRS, holding one-third of the nation’s Pu inventory, has a long-term stewardship commitment to investigation of Pu behavior in the groundwater and downgradient vast wetlands. Pu is believed to be essentially immobile due to its low solubility and high particle reactivity to mineral phase or natural organic matter (NOM). For example, in sediments collected from a region of SRS, close to a wetland and a groundwater plume, 239,240Pu concentrations suggest immobilization by NOM …
The Characterization Of A Recombinant Virophage Integrase, Martin Christopher Chacon
The Characterization Of A Recombinant Virophage Integrase, Martin Christopher Chacon
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Virophages are satellite-like dsDNA viruses that parasitize giant viruses of the family Mimiviridae. Mavirus is the second virophage discovered that associates with its host virus Cafeteria roenbergensis Virus (CroV). When co-infecting their common host cell Cafeteria roenbergensis, a marine zooplankton that is widely spread throughout the oceans, mavirus will inhibit CroV's replication. In addition, mavirus was shown to share high similarities to the Maverick/Polinton eukaryotic DNA transposons. A coding sequence in mavirus genome (MV02) reveals high homology to retroviral integrases such as those found in HIVs. The putative integrase MV02 is predicted to integrate mavirus DNA into the host genome. …

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is an important chemical species in the troposphere as it aids the long-range transport of NOx and subsequent formation of O3 in relatively clean remote regions. Over the past few decades observations from aircraft campaigns and surface sites have been used to better understand the regional distribution of PAN. However, recent measurements made by satellites allow for a global assessment of PAN in the upper troposphere-lower stratosphere (UTLS). In this study, we investigate global PAN distributions from two independent retrieval methodologies, based on measurements from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument, on …

There is something magical about taking lumps of cold clay and turning them into a functional form. The transofrmation process is what first peaked my interest in ceramics. I turned this visual art form my junior year of college after being completely overwhelmed by my chemistry major. Not only did Ceramics 1 teach me basic hand building and surface design techniques, but it allowed me to literally pound out my stress. I've gained a strong adoration for ceramics because it relieves my stress and gives me the opportunity to express myself.
After taking Ceramics 1, enrolling in Ceramics 2 was …
