An Activity Promoting The Practice Of Quantitative Literacy For Pre– And In–Service Teachers Of Mathematics And Science, Timothy L. Sorey, Teri Willard, Duane Sholz
Numeracy
The purpose of this article is to describe a hands-on, laboratory activity that provided pre-service teachers in mathematics and science methods courses, and also some in-service mathematics teachers, with the opportunity to exercise quantitative literacy (QL) skills. The focus of the activity is electrical resistance, more particularly the resistance (in ohms) that is painted on small resistors by the use of color-coded bands, one of which is a band for % error. The activity consists of four parts. In the first, student teams familiarize themselves with the code, measure the ohmage of resistors for which the codes are visible, and …
Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Numeracy
This paper compares the academic performance of students in three similar elementary statistics courses taught by the same instructor, but with the lab component differing among the three. One course is traditionally taught without a lab component; the second with a lab component using scenarios and an extensive use of technology, but without explicit coordination between lab and lecture; and the third using a lab component with an extensive use of technology that carefully coordinates the lab with the lecture. Extensive use of technology means, in this context, using Minitab software in the lab section, doing homework and quizzes using …

Black hole accretion and jet production are areas of intensive study in astrophysics. Recent work has found a relation between radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and black hole mass. With the assumption that radio and X-ray luminosities are suitable proxies for jet power and accretion power, respectively, a broad fundamental connection between accretion and jet production is implied. In an effort to refine these links and enhance their power, we have explored the above relations exclusively among black holes with direct, dynamical mass-measurements. This approach not only eliminates systematic errors incurred through the use of secondary mass measurements, but also effectively …

Grades 7-8 Mean, Median, And Mode, Rich Miller Iii
Math
This lesson is a math lesson for seventh and eighth grade students on mean, medium, and mode. Through this lesson students will be able to understand the measures of central tendency and their definitions, how to calculate them and what steps are involved, and how the theories can be applied on real life. In this lesson, students are tiered by ability and are able to pick a project based off of their interest and the math concept they are working on. Each activity has a tiered task card to guide the students.
Modeling Temperature Reduction In Tendons Using Gaussian Processes Within A Dynamic Linear Model, Richard David Wyss
Modeling Temperature Reduction In Tendons Using Gaussian Processes Within A Dynamic Linear Model, Richard David Wyss
Theses and Dissertations
The time it takes an athlete to recover from an injury can be highly influenced by training procedures as well as the medical care and physical therapy received. When an injury occurs to the muscles or tendons of an athlete, it is desirable to cool the muscles and tendons within the body to reduce inflammation, thereby reducing the recovery time. Consequently, finding a method of treatment that is effective in reducing tendon temperatures is beneficial to increasing the speed at which the athlete is able to recover. In this project, Bayesian inference with Gaussian processes will be used to model …
Review Of Super Crunchers By Ian Ayers, Eric Gaze

Ayers, I. Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-by-Numbers Is the New Way to be Smart. (Bantam Dell Publishing Group, 2007). 272 pp. Hard cover $25 ISBN 978-0-553-80540-6.
Super Crunchers tells the story of how analyzing data is changing the ways in which decisions are made. We in the National Numeracy Network make a case for the importance of quantitative literacy by referring to how much quantitative information is now available to each of us: “a world awash in numbers.” Ian Ayres zeroes in on the people who are making a living crunching all of these data. From the seemingly innocuous (how …

Measuring Resource Inequality: The Gini Coefficient, Michael T. Catalano, Tanya L. Leise, Thomas J. Pfaff
Numeracy
This paper stems from work done by the authors at the Mathematics for Social Justice Workshop held in June of 2007 at Middlebury College. We provide a description of the Gini coefficient and some discussion of how it can be used to promote quantitative literacy skills in mathematics courses. The Gini Coefficient was introduced in 1921 by Italian statistician Corrado Gini as a measure of inequality. It is defined as twice the area between two curves. One, the Lorenz curve for a given population with respect to a given resource, represents the cumulative percentage of the resource as a function …
Probability Density Functions For Snir In Ds-Cdma, David W. Matolak
Probability Density Functions For Snir In Ds-Cdma, David W. Matolak
Faculty Publications
Analytical expressions for the probability density function of block-wise signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio for both synchronous and asynchronous direct-sequence spread spectrum code-division multiple access systems are developed, for equal average energy signals on the Gaussian and Rayleigh flat fading channels. Using the standard Gaussian approximation for multi-user interference, accurate density approximations are obtained, which agree very well with computer simulation results.
Effective Sample Size In Order Statistics Of Correlated Data, Neill Mcgrath
Effective Sample Size In Order Statistics Of Correlated Data, Neill Mcgrath
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
In this study we address the problem of using effective sample size (ESS) to approximate the probability distributions of order statistics from correlated data. We present these approximations and determine their accuracy through simulation studies. More often than not, correlation exists between data points in a set of data. When we use the original sample size of the data in a derivation of a model of the data, we automatically assume that each data point contains one data point's worth of information. If the data are correlated, then each data point contains less than one data point's worth of information …

Sprunger, Jennifer Gibbs, Amy Proctor, William E. Acree Jr., Michael H. Abraham, Yunjing Meng, Cong Yao, Jared L. Anderson
Jared L. Anderson
Previously reported ion-specific equation coefficients for both the Abraham general solvation model and Goss modified Abraham model are updated using recently measured activity coefficient, gas chromatographic retention factor, and solubility data for solutes dissolved in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Reported for the first time are equation coefficients for 1-propyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium cation, and octylsulfate and thiocyanate anions. In total nine sets of cation-specific and eight sets of anion-specific equation coefficients have been determined for each model. The derived correlations describe the 976 experimental gas-to-RTIL partition coefficients to within a standard deviation of 0.12 log units and the 955 experimental water-to-RTIL partitions …
Quantile Regression, Roger Koenker, Kevin F. Hallock
Quantile Regression, Roger Koenker, Kevin F. Hallock
Kevin F Hallock
Quantile regression as introduced by Koenker and Bassett seeks to extend ideas of quantiles to the estimation of conditional quantile functions--models in which quantiles of the conditional distribution of the response variable are expressed as functions of observed covariates.

The proportional hazards (PH) model, but more speciÖcally its special case the Cox regression model (Cox, 1972), plays an important role in the theory and practice of lifetime and duration data analysis. This is because the PH model (and the Cox regression model) provides a convenient way to evaluate the ináuence of one or several covariates on the probability of conclusion of lifetime or duration spells. However, the PH speciÖcation substantially restricts interdependence between the explanatory variables and the lifetime in determining the hazard. In particular, the Cox regression model model restricts the coe¢ cients of the regressors in the …
The Most Representative Composite Rank Ordering Of Multi-Attribute Objects By The Particle Swarm Optimization, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
The Most Representative Composite Rank Ordering Of Multi-Attribute Objects By The Particle Swarm Optimization, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
Rank-ordering of individuals or objects on multiple criteria has many important practical applications. A reasonably representative composite rank ordering of multi-attribute objects/individuals or multi-dimensional points is often obtained by the Principal Component Analysis, although much inferior but computationally convenient methods also are frequently used. However, such rank ordering – even the one based on the Principal Component Analysis – may not be optimal. This has been demonstrated by several numerical examples. To solve this problem, the Ordinal Principal Component Analysis was suggested some time back. However, this approach cannot deal with various types of alternative schemes of rank ordering, mainly …

What is the role of research in the field of pediatric psychology? To answer this question, it is useful to imagine what clinical practice would be like if we had no research foundation for our work. Without such a foundation, practitioners would have no basis for suggesting specific interventions or understanding why some interventions are successful and why others fail. Similarly, without a research foundation, assessments conducted with children would be based on unstandardized assessment methods, and no normative data would be available. Clearly, most of us would agree that scientific research is the foundation of pediatric psychology, including all …

Professor Ian Ayres, in his new book, Super Crunchers, details the brave new world of statistical prediction and how it has already begun to affect our lives. For years, academic researchers have known about the considerable and at times surprising advantages of statistical models over the considered judgments of experienced clinicians and experts. Today, these models are emerging all over the landscape. Whether the field is wine, baseball, medicine, or consumer relations, they are vying against traditional experts for control over how we make decisions. For the legal system, the take-home of Ayres's book and the examples he describes is …

The neutron elastic magnetic form factor was extracted from quasielastic electron scattering on deuterium over the range Q2 = 1.0–4.8 GeV2 with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. High precision was achieved with a ratio technique and a simultaneous in situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency. Neutrons were detected with electromagnetic calorimeters and time-of-flight scintillators at two beam energies. The dipole parametrization gives a good description of the data
