Recent studies of surface waters in North America, Japan, and Europe have reported the presence of steroidogenic agents as contaminants. The current study has three objectives: 1) to determine if steroidogenic compounds are present in the Elkhorn River, 2) to determine if sediments collected from the Elkhorn River can act as a source of steroidogenic compounds to aquatic organisms, and 3) to determine if site-specific biological effects are apparent in the hepatic gene expression of fathead minnows. Living shorelines represent a shoreline management option that combines various erosion control methodologies and/or structures while at the same time restoring or preserving natural shoreline vegetation communities. A common living shoreline design in Chesapeake Bay includes a low offshore rock sill to absorb wave energy with an emergent wetland landward of the sill to enhance erosion control, provide critical habitat, and improve water quality condition. Fish Nutrient Cycling, Aquatic Respiration, And Terrestrial Insect Nutrient Subsidies To Lakes, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Mehner et al. (2005) reported that fish feeding on terrestrial insects could be important for nutrient budgets and cycling in lakes. They studied bleak (Alburnus alburnus) that fed largely on terrestrial insects, and they suggested that this contributed 2.1% of the lake's nutrient budget and that the subsequent excretion by the fish was equivalent to 11% of epilimnetic dissolved phosphorus concentrations. They concluded that nutrients delivered to lakes via terrestrial insects and recycled by fish would be most important for small lakes because of the large perimeter-to-area ratio between donor and recipient habitats. This soil survey of the Bettink dairy farm in Northcliffe, Western Australia aimed to: provide detailed soil descriptions to add to information associated with the environment in which the dairy industry in Western Australia is located; collect soil samples at predetermined standard depths from documented farm locations for nutrient analysis; map soils with similar characteristics based on description and analysis.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is interested in developing a temperature and water quality Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) allocation for the Pend Oreille River between the Long Bridge near the historical Lake Pend Oreille outlet and Albeni Falls Dam (U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s reservoir) as shown in Figure 1.

This management scenario report is an update of a prior report. The management scenarios had to be rerun because of a modeling error made with the outflows rate of Albeni Falls Dam. The new calibration error statistics were compared with the old statistics in Appendix B: Model Calibration …

Vegetation type, extent, continuity, and structure are some of the most important factors that determine wildlife diversity and distribution. Other contributing factors that shape wildlife communities include disturbance, competition, climate, and water availability. Because vegetation communities in the southwestern U.S. gradate sharply along zones of soil moisture, wildlife are often restricted to specific vegetation types. Along the Las Vegas Wash (Wash), Nevada, more than 250 wildlife species have been documented to occur in distinct wetland, riparian, and upland vegetation types. Following man-made or natural catastrophes, widespread and long-lasting disruption of lifelines can lead to economic impacts for both business and residential lifeline users. As a result, the total economic losses caused by infrastructure damage may be much higher than the value of damage to infrastructure itself. In this paper, we consider the estimation of economic impacts on businesses and residential consumers resulting from water supply disruption. The methodology we present for estimating business interruption losses assumes that marginal losses are increasing in the severity of disruption and that there may be a critical water availability cutoff below which business activity …

The data contained within the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. The assessment characterizes conditions that are observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach reports conditions in three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Three GIS coverages are generated. The lynn_lubc coverage contains features related to the land use …

In a global world, how can water, a necessary and increasingly scarce resource, be managed? We understand that water is a basic need. Do we also share the belief that water is a basic right? Does the international community share beliefs about water that may be the foundation of an international regime or system of global governance for the equitable implementation of global water policy? And finally, what international body or bodies might handle the disputes that arise as our population and need for water increase? The author tackles these questions and looks at models to guide us.

IFPRI and IWMI's report uses computer modeling to project water demand and availability through to 2025 and predicts the likely impact of changes in water policy and investment, making specific recommendations for specific locations around the globe.
